My daughter & jh bought dinner as return treat for my wife & i ‘lombang’ aka enjoyed collateral benefits. They suggested chikuwatei, and now thinking back the last time i went there was 3yrs+ ago. These few days I had been thinking of going to chikuwatei again so the time was most fitting. Not sure if there was any change of ownership but the service was very much better. The lady taking charge at the front counter, showing us to the table, gave good recommendations and was not pushy. The oysters she recommended were excellent. When she was clearing the dishes at the end of the meal she tipped over my wife’s sake cup. Later she came back with a full cup of sake. I guess we could have reasonably asked for that too but we did not, & did not really expect it.We ordered 4 chirashi don for 4pax, 2 servings of oysters (4 oysters), teriyaki chicken & a 250ml house sake (S$16). I was much looking forward for the chirashi don as I had not taken here for so long. In fact i was slightly disappointed. The helpings were just as large – 5 slices of salmon, 3 maguro, 3 kajiki, 2 hamachi & 2 tamago (egg), with a heap of ikura. The rice was good, ok not the best. The salmon was not so sweet (2 of the 5 were sweeter). I thought what the salmon sashimi i had at sun with moon wheelock as a S$3 side dish for 3 pieces were better! The kajiki & maguro were also not very sweet, the hamachi was a bit sweeter. the ikura added a slightly salty, flavourful touch to the vinegared rice.I guessed overall it was not too bad but a bit underwhelming for me & kind of below what i expected. If I were having just sashimi, the S$20 chirashi don lunch set I had recently at ginza kuroson was a lot better quality, but that was lunch. If I wanted combination then the sets at sun with moon would be more attractive than this. Must add though that the oysters were quite large & excellent, juicy, tasty with no metallic taste, very enjoyable. the teriyaki chicken was good too, though not really food I would order. Probably won’t come here too soon unless there are some other specials or promotions.See my full reviews & photos at = http://chefquak.com/2014/06/17/oysters-chirashi-don-chikuwatei-on-17jun2014/ continue reading

It’s a nice quiet place for lunch without the usual lunch crowd. Have heard rave reviews about the mushroom chawanmushi and also the Chirashi set. First impression of the chawanmushi is its definitely more quality food than the usual ones you eat with just plain egg and maybe one tiny piece of chicken or prawn meat. You will be delighted with plenty of mushroom which goes well with the steamed egg, retaining the flavor of the fungi. The chirashi also impressed with its thick sashimi slices, with 4 different types offered (salmon, tuna, yellow tail and I think mackerel) and also topped up with salmon fish roe. It’s probably the thickest slice of sashimi I’ve ever eaten. Very fresh I would say but being not a huge raw food fan, I should have stuck to a cooked food item and ordered this as a side instead. continue reading

This is one of my most favourite Japanese steam egg as you can see, the generous amount of mushroom topped on it are really tasty and very healthy for everyone too. The steamed egg is very smooth and really fragrant, which is also not too salty and with the right amount of seasoning in it. The portion is quite generous and the price is quite reasonable. Usually I will order this dish to go along with their fragrant japanese rice and teriyaki chicken. continue reading

This Japanese restaurant do served many delicious japanese dishes which really cater for people like me who is crazy over Japanese foods. One of my favourite here is their cold noodles. The brown noodles are very smooth and chewy, which you dip your noodles in the cold soup certainly taste refreshing and at the same time very sweet and yummy! Adding some chopped spring onions to the noodles will also enhance the flavour of it and make it tastes even more delicious! continue reading

I had said before and I say it again, this place serves one of the best Chirashi sushi in Singapore! I actually took a cab all the way from the east just to satisfy my craving here at Chikuwa. So this season, Uncle Peter (the chef) decides that salmon, sword fish and mackerel are his catch. As you can see from the photograph, uncle peter is very generous with his sashimi slices and ikura! Extremely delicious! Unforgettable experience, you really got to try it yourself. Large slab of Unagi was the order of my dining partner! continue reading
