With many different and funky food establishment popping up in Joo Chiat, it has slowly becoming a melting pot of the world's cuisine. Thus, it is not a surprise that you will get to have authentic French desserts along the Joo Chiat Road.

We actually got to this place close to 8.30pm on one of the weekday. We were politely informed that they will be closing in 30 mins, so we need to get our order in quickly.

As we just had a big dinner, we decided to order two desserts to share. Chocolate Soufflé ($12) and Crème Brulee ($8).

The Crème Brulee came first. Served in shallow pink ceramic oval bowl, presented with strawberry on top of thinly caramelised sugar. The caramelised sugar is consistently crispy, thin and easy to crack. The cream has the nice balance of sweetness and smoothness of the egg yolk. The only thing missing here is the vanilla seeds, so it is more likely that they use vanilla paste instead of fresh vanilla pods according to our expert baker. However, the Crème Brulee manage to satisfy my Little Devil.

Next come the main attraction, Chocolate Soufflé. It is light, fluffy, airy and has a beautiful chocolate texture. The chocolate sauce to accompany the soufflé is just to die for. Two Thumbs up for the chef. Before the end of this, we already planning when to come back for more.

Although the desserts are delightful and excellent, I believe the real improvement needed is their coffee. I ordered a latte. The milk was burnt (too hot) and the coffee is bland without any body at all. Although it seems they have a good coffee machine, the service staff don't know how to use it. Hopefully they look into this, improve or send their service staff on a quick barista course. I personally believe a perfect cup of coffee will elevate their desserts further.

The décor of the place is mostly white, supported with chandelier theme and sixties lighting. As the place can only cater for around 20 people, the service is quite efficient with limited staff.

Overall, Gobi Cakes is definitely a place to try for desserts. Pricing is very reasonable and their desserts are just astonishing. I will personally skip the coffee and go for other drinks. Little Devil and I already can't wait for our next visit here.

I responded to a SuperDeals offer and bought 2 vouchers at $50. So it was already a $25 each investment of a 3-course meal. However, drinks are separate charges and so is the service charge. Luckily GST was included in the voucher price. Confit of Pork Collar - confit of pork collar with fruit relish served on roasted potatoes & assorted vegetables

Baked Miso Salmon - baked miso salmon served on roasted potatoes w creamy spinach & carrot puree

Desserts
Chocolate Igloo - crunchy chocolate meringue covered with caramelised almonds filled with chocolate praline ganache, served with vanilla ice cream

Dome - smooth dark chocolate ganache richness on crispy filo pastry in a cream of orange confit pool

Compliments on the pork, but the salmon was a tad under-cooked at the skin side as you can even see a fingerprint on the miso coating. Otherwise, the sides went well with the meats.

Chocolate Igloo looked nice concept-wise, but tires you out fast with its over-richness and sweetness overload. Dome started off well but left a bad impression as well as a bad taste in the mouth as the filo pastry at the bottom was totally burnt! Yet the chef had the cheek to serve it and at the place where all things sweet are their specialty! They tried to hide the burnt pastry under the chocolate ganache and the orange sauce, but they certainly didn't know who they were dealing with here. I undercovered the no-no and brought it out for display.

I'm discouraged to purchase any more of such voucher deals as it's seems rather ridiculous to have to pay for additional service charges outside the voucher. Such that in the end, you wouldn't have saved much if you's just walk in and order a set menu. Plus, the service would have been better. They just seem to give you sub-par service if you produce a voucher.

The decor is minimalist: all white with a chandelier. They outline the kitchen window so that it looks 3D (see photo above). Very cute.

Hookerlily and Wise Guy shared Soufflé with Crème Anglaise with a hint of Malibu ($12).

You have to wait 10 minutes for it but it was worth it. OMG, both Wise Guy and Hookerlily agreed it was the BEST SOUFFLE IN SINGAPORE. It was so light and airy and ethereal, like it evaporated in the mouth. The sweetness was just right. It was simple delicate and delicious.

Macarons should not be filled with butter cream. The butter cream tastes like a mouthful of butter. No real taste or flavour. T shells fall apart and detached and separated when you pick them up. It's like they are better left untouched.

Example of how macarons should NOT be. Great presentation, lovely to look at, but no substance. Lack of consistency as some macarons were chewier than others.

The bergamot flavour was interesting and there is a slight hint of bergamot. The green tea had a slight matcha taste. Other flavours were quite sickeningly oily.

They really could do better since macarons cost so much.

happened to be around that area & saw the package of macaron was cute so bought 1 box to try 1 box cost $7.90 for over 10 mini size macaronswith orange,vanilla,chocolate mint & strawberry the shell of the macaron was abit hard & super sweet eating this is like eating sugar compare to bakerzin,1caramel,Darcisgobi macaron was really not nice & sweetso i won't recommend it i rate 1/10 for this

With a new cafe in Suntec City (just opposite TCC by the main entrance) serving both savoury and sweet, Gobi is more than a desserts patisserie now. Kind of Bakerzin/Canele-ish, isn’t it? Set lunches/dinners are affordably priced (around $14.90++/$18.90++) for 3 course but I’m more into trying the cakes and pastries they are well known for.Like strawberry shortcake, black forest cake is one of those desserts I can easily say no to since I don’t like cream all that much. Set lunches/dinners are affordably priced (around $14.90++/$18.90++) for 3 course but I’m more into trying the cakes and pastries they are well known for.

Like strawberry shortcake, black forest cake is one of those desserts I can easily say no to since I don’t like cream all that much. But Gobi’s version is one of those rare ones I like, mainly cuz the Black Forest ($7.30++) is unconventional with both jelly and cherries embedded in kirsch cream. Flavour of the cherry liquer is distinct and chocolate sponge is soft and moist too. A nice twist to the traditional!

Strawberry Mille Feuille ($7.30++) was so horrible such a joke that we sent it back. Puff pastry was not flaky or crisp, tasted stale and so hard that it’s impossible to cut it.

The manager kindly allowed us to choose another dessert to replace the mille feuille. I like the nice gesture but not so much the Opera ($7.30++) though. It wasn’t cut as neatly as the black forest, coffee cream was too sweet and there’s a coating of condensation on the top layer of dark chocolate which I’m quite sure wasn’t supposed to be there.

Though pricing is comparable to Bakerzin, Canele, 1 Caramel etc., the standard and derived satisfaction still falls short of the mark so it’s unlikely Gobi will spring to my mind when the desserts craving hits.

Anyway, if you want to try Gobi’s cakes, go after 6.30pm cuz it’s 50% off all individual cakes!
