Introduction
The first and only Shochu specialty Japanese restaurant in Singapore, Satsuma serves a wide menu of Tokyo-styled food with a contemporary twist to complement the 100 labels of shochu by-the-glass. *Shochu, a distilled alcoholic beverage (made of sweet potato, rice, barley, etc) is currently enjoying explosive popularity in Japan for being the healthier and trendier choice drink. continue reading

This is a japanese restaurant that stands out from others in terms of its specialties! – it’s famous for its grilled meats and sochu. So of course we had to try their alcohol when we went to this restaurant! i wouldnt recommend the one we tried though the drinks are pretty expensive by the glass, so we decided it would be better to get a bottle to share among the 5 of us. well, it was a little too much after awhile, especially since we didnt really like the flavour we ordered the one we got was the Fusa No Tsuyu ($75 for 720ml bottle) – described as having a mild fruity nose of pears, showing harmonious balanced between fruits and grain. perhaps because the texture was rather dry, so we didnt like it much xPInstead of ordering the usual salmon sashimi, the waitress recommended that we try the horse mackeral instead! sounded so exotic haha. it’s seasonal apparently, so since it was in stock, we decided to order it. pretty expensive though! alright, actually this entire meal was really quite expensive -.- the waitress kept recommending dishes that were pretty pricey. the horse mackeral sashimi was a whopping $55, but considering it was a whole fish, i suppose it was pretty worth it. i liked the taste and slightly crunchy texture! kinda reminds me of tuna.In addition, to make your purchase worth the money, they even deep-fried the bones for us! deliciously crispy and surprisingly with a relatively generous amount of meat, this was quite a yummy dish!We really loved the stir fry pork belly with kimchi ($18)! it was really flavourful, drenched in the kimchi sauce – absolutely wonderful ^^the japanese yam tea rice ($12) was a really interesting dish! we completely did not expect it to be so soupy i thought it was fried rice!!! -.- but it was pretty interesting. felt like a wholesome healthy dish the tea soup had a mild flavour, kind of like soup for the soul For grills we had the chicken thigh with leek ($6), the savoury pancake ($6) was another surprising dish! erm, we didnt really expect the pancake to look like what it did hahaha. it was quite yummy anyway we also liked the mushroom stuffed with minced chicken ($6) which had a good balance of flavours between the meat and mushroom. For full review and more photos, please visit http://thelittlemomentsofmylife.blogspot.com/ continue reading

For full review: www.dairycream.blogspot.comOur failed quest for Okinawa food at Mimigar led us to this dark and rather nostalgic izakaya called Satsuma Shochu, which is of course known for its shochu ( a distilled alcoholic beverage made of sweet potato, rice, barley, etc). vegetables stick bowl with saikyo miso (sweet miso) $5Once settled down, the vegetables stick bowl with saikyo miso (sweet miso) was served which would have been rejected if we had known each had a hefty price tag of $5.But if we were to ignore this, all of the food here were exceptionally satisfying and it was not surprising that the place is yet another one with numerous good reviews and recommendations. The Tebasaki, grilled chicken wings, ($7 per order of 2 skewers) are smaller than those commonly seen here but were tender juicy with a tang of lemon.Okonomiyaki ($6 per 2 skewers)What surprised us was this plate of big deep fried balls topped with mayonnaise. This is actually Okonomiyaki in dark golden batter that was by far one of the crunchiest fried food.the Beef and Kimchi hotpot ($18)For more spicy food, the Beef and Kimchi hotpot was a hearty portion with raw egg yolk. The kimchi based soup, which was choked of mushrooms and other vegetables, tasted sweeter than it should. Do leave the raw pinkish beef slices in the pot to be cooked longer for better flavour. In short, this place brands itself as the first and only shochu specialty restaurant in Singapore. The menu is a fuss free booklet with no pictures and the items are extensive for an izakaya. Ignoring the "free" vegetable sticks, I might return to try other delicious items. This place has a cosy ambience and its recommended for friends who like to chat over good japanese wine even though it is also suitable for families . continue reading

The hubby and I have a penchant for Gallery Hotel. It's one of our favourite places in Singapore because it's got a wonderful array of Japanese restaurants and Satsuma is one of them.Satsuma comes in 2 floors and when we visited it, the ground floor was full so we were shown to the second floor. As the floor area is actually very small and everyone is seated on the tatami on the ground floor, it almost feels like we just walked into somebody's house and interrupted the party! The second floor offers a different seating with proper table and chairs but still dark, intimate and cozy. Definitely the place to go to if you want to have a romantic dinner or just a nice chill out place with a few friends. Of course as with most establishments at Gallery Hotel, you can expect most of the chatter to be in Japanese! It actually reminds me of a shochu bar that I visited in Kyoto so if you're into authentic experiences then this is the place to go. The shochu selection is of course delightful but since I am no expert, I shan't try to say more. The prices are not cheap but it's alcohol in a upmarket shochu bar so this is to be expected. We ordered our usual alcohol side dish - edamame - but satsuma actually serves complimentary raw salad too! It was quite refreshing, both in taste and dining experience. We seldom encounter raw vegetable sticks and cabbage with a nice tangy dip at Japanese restaurants. All in all, I'll definitely visit again to try the food when my budget allows it! continue reading
