OpenRice created a 3m x 3m Rice Mural of their smiley icon using expired rice that has already been coloured and volunteers together with the beneficiaries helped to accomplish the mission. We had a sumptuous and array of yummy Italian cuisine from Saizeriya at Toa Payoh Central.
From the salad menu, we tasted three choices of fresh vegetables and ingredients for salad.
Salmon Salad – S$5.90 with a combination of iceberg and romaine lettuces, mini tomatoes and fresh big pieces of Norwegian Smoked Salmon. Pomelo Salad – S$2.90 with freshly pieces of pomelo with balsamic vinegar mixed with extra virigin olive oil and black pepper. I find this salad a bit too sourish maybe a little added sugar would be better off to round out the dressing. Northern shrimp cocktail salad – S$4.90 the ingredients are similar to the salmon salad with the exception of fresh translucent looking North Land Shrimps. For savory and inviting Appetizers there were two orders of 8 pieces of Chicken Wings at S$7.90 per plate. The wings were tasty and well marinated prepared from Saizeriya special recipe.
Oven baked Asari Clams at S$3.90. The watery Asari Clams were pretty bland. Two servings of oven baked Escargots in special garlic sauce which is also the in house No. 1 best seller.
There were generous amounts of rich flavoured garlic in each escargot. Just irresistibly yummy and at an affordable price of S$5.90 for 6 pieces per serving. 8 pieces of Mussels Marinara at S$5.90 cooked in tomato and garlic sauce. The sauce was too watery. It would taste better with thicker sauce and more minced garlic. The mussels were slightly chewy. From the Steak and Hamburgers Menu, we tried the Beef Stew priced S$5.90.
Tender beef cubes mixed with selected vegetables such as carrots, big onions, celery and corn kernels with a satisfying flavour. This stew would go well with a hot bowl of plain rice. Dining in an Italiana restaurant without a pizza order is just impossible. Therefore we had a serving of a 9 inch Chicken Curry Pizza priced S$7.90. The pizza has a combination of grilled chicken chunks drizzled with diced red and green bell peppers mixed with curry sauce. Good taste for a great combination. There was also a plate of of Chicken Doria at S$4.90. The baked rice is cooked with chicken Bolognese and white sauce. The plate of Paella with rich ingredient of squids, shrimps and mussels cooked with baked rice at affordable price of S$7.90 was the popular dish of the day.
The hallmark of this dish is that special layer of crispy caramelized rice at the bottom of the paellera. We had four choices of desserts to the perfect ending of a good lunch.
Delicious and tasty Truffle Ice Cream at S$4.90.
A piece of Tiramisu Cake priced S$4.90. This traditional pudding like dessert consisting of a sponge cake dipped in a liquor and layered grated chocolate and rich custard.
The Italian pudding Panna Cotta at S$4.90 which is flavorful taste of egg and milk mixture.
The strawberry ice cream was rich and fruity at $1.90 per scoop. This is in fact another food tasting and bonding session with new found friends from OpenRice and their Marketing Team.
Wishing the Management and Staff of OpenRice Singapore and fellow OpenRicers are very Happy and Prosperous Foodie Lunar New Year 2014 as we usher the Year of the Horse in less than three weeks time.
