All-day breakfast places are far and few, and good ones are even rarer. Thankfully, my friend from a local magazine brought me to Hatched for lunch a few Wednesdays ago.

Nestled along Evans Road across from the old SMU campus, Hatched proved to be a shabby chic haven for anything egg-y. With warm light bulbs casually hanging from the ceiling, long wooden tables and a black "chalkboard" wall, the decor is unpretentious and cozy.

The food, likewise, is very approachable and, thankfully, very affordable (mains are mostly under $20). At my friend's recommendation, I opted for Burly Benedict. Like its name, the dish is a little burly and great for meat-lovers. A plump perfectly poached egg sits on top of half an English muffin. The dish is enlivened with mornay sauce and savory corned beef.

The Scrambled Eggs with Chorizo is yet another simple dish that hits the spot. The eggs are beautifully scrambled with just the right amount of cream.

Excited by my first impression of Hatched, I went back on a Sunday afternoon with my boyfriend and was a little disappointed with the slow service. I ordered scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, which came to me lukewarm. I understand if the smoked salmon has to be cold but the eggs and tomato on the side shouldn't be.
Seeing our disgruntlement, the staff were nice enough to give us a 10% discount.

I am, however, undeterred by that Sunday and will be back for more Burly Benedict.

If you're looking for hearty and comforting breakfast food that will warm your soul, Hatched is the perfect place to go... just go on a weekday.
