Popped by the newly opened Spinelli Coffee outlet here at the revitalized Wheelock basement for some coffee and cakes. When I initially stepped in, it was really empty with few people, but people suddenly came in flocks and within minutes, the place was full. Popped by the newly opened Spinelli Coffee outlet here at the revitalized Wheelock basement for some coffee and cakes. When I initially stepped in, it was really empty with few people, but people suddenly came in flocks and within minutes, the place was full. I guess it was tea time and since the shopfront faces the escalator, I guess the shop expects to face floods of crowds any time. The place actually looks very cosy with ample tables and seats that got filled up quickly. There were some comfortable looking sofas at the sides of the cafe and the inner corner for customers to sit on.

I looked at the fridge near the counter and was immediately drawn to their cute and neatly arranged rows of Petite cakes selection. So for $4.60, you can get 2 cakes, $6.20 for 3 cakes and $8.20 for 4 cakes. I was actually quite excited about choosing my cakes and decided to settle for two- Chocolate Banana and Opera Classique flavours.

First off, the cakes were really miniscule- some people might not like this and would probably see more sense paying a little more to get a bigger and fatter single slice, single flavoured cake. But some people might appreciate the choice of having 2 or more cakes on their plate and might be willing to pay for variety.

Chocolate Banana- It was a really simple sponge cake filled with a layer of chocolate banana filling. I could have easily popped the entire slice of petite cake into my mouth but refrained from doing so. I tried to appreciate the rich, fragrant banana infused chocolate filling that went well with the soft sponge cake.

Opera Classique- it was just an ordinary chocolate cake, wedged between some layers of sponge cake. Did not really appreciate this.

I ordered a cup of latte to go with my cakes, but was utterly disappointed by how my cup of latte did not seem to have much coffee in it. It was overwhelmed with milk and sadly tasted like warm milk. This was not I was expecting from a cup of Spinelli coffee.

The cashier taking my orders did not seem friendly at all; she did not smile at all and was seemingly unfriendly and cold to the customers. I noticed her attitude was consistently curt and bordering on negative for the customers behind me too. Perhaps she was having a bad day, but that did not bode well for customers expecting great service and coffee from a reputable coffee chain.
