Awesome sushi as usual
Itacho Sushi
2013-06-28
If I could order the whole list of sushi on the menu, I would. Itacho Sushi offers premium, exotic sushi at affordable prices. Here's a few.Flying fish roe gunkan and lobster salad gunkan. The sushi were all made fresh. Fried squid with salmon and ebiko roe salad. It was flavourful and the cucumbers in the salad added a refreshing crunch to the taste. Tempura Shrimp with sea salt. It was freshly fried and not oily at all. …Read More

Ippudo Ramen
IPPUDO
2013-06-28
Ippudo at Mandarin Gallery always has the longest queue as compared to other restaurants who has ramen as their star dish. What I love about Ippudo is their thick and authentic broth that never fails to deliver - always hitting the right notes on my taste buds. Here's my usual bowl of ramen, which is one of their three signature ramen selections. Tonkotsu broth, with a dollop of miso paste and dark sauce. Thin noodles were cooked to a harder texture and that's what I like about Ippudo - that the customers get to choose the hardness of the noodles. …Read More

Generally good.
The Ascot
2013-06-28
Decided to give The Ascot a try even though the store front of the restaurant looks a little dodgy. We tried their strawberry salad and it was good. Strong strawberry fragrant and the spinach was rich. It was refreshing to the taste buds. Also tried their bunch of bangers and it had a variety of sausages. I can't remember the variety of the sausages but it was good. The fried mars bars was not too rich and gelat. It can be quite addictive. …Read More

Flour. Flour and more flour
VeganBurg
2013-06-28
I came to VeganBurg out of curiousity with a couple of friends and decided to give this a try. Personally I'm a meat person and this just doesn't cut it. We tried their Char-Grilled Satay Burger. The meat taste floury underneath the thick layer of smokey sauce. We had Vegan franks. It tasted really floury and I wasn't used to it. The best food I had at VeganBurg was their crispy potato and spinach pops which would probably be an average dish outside. :(…Read More

Great place for bbq meats
HanSang Korean Restaurant & Market
2013-06-28
Went to The Grandstand with a couple of friends and we had Korean BBQ food for dinner. What I'd like to recommend as a must-try in this restaurant is their Prime Ribeye and their marinated short ribs.As I went there with a couple of friends, I didn't really get to taste much of it but the meat was awesome and juicy and fresh. We also tried their pancake with ice cream. The pancake was average on it's own but when paired with the ice cream, the sweetness in the ice cream brings out the savoury in the pancake. It was a good combination.Korean BBQ are always on the steep side of the scale when it comes to the price. For this restaurant I think the price is average. …Read More

A good place for your meat fix
Grill-Out!
2013-06-28
Went to The Grandstand with a couple of friends and decided on Grill-Out for dinner. We tried their angel hair pasta which was served chilled. Love the symphony of flavours in this dish. There were japanese konbu, ebi roe and heavily drizzled with truffle oil. We also had their kurobuta pork collar that comes with generous serving of vegetables. The meat was a little on the tough side though. Overall this is a great place for a cozy gathering among friends and the price wise is still affordable. …Read More

Good food and ambiance
PS.Cafe at Palais Renaissance
2013-06-28
PS Cafe at Palais Renaissance is much like their other outlet at Dempsey Road which has an alfresco area. Went there with three of my friends for lunch and this was what I had!Croque Monsieur. Basically it's just sandwich with ham and gruyere cheese. The last time I had this was so long ago at another restaurant and I didn't had a good impression. This was so much better, the toast was toasted to a perfect crisp and the cheese was warm and oozy. The salad dressing was different from those usual ones and it tasted awesome with the rocket leaves and spinach.…Read More

Awesome roast chicken
Poulet
2013-06-28
Poulet is located at the first floor of the extension of Jurong Point (JP2). Along the stretch there was other restaurants as well like Fig & Olive, Long John Silver etc. What I love about this restaurant is very much the French inspired theme that comes along with the French food. French onion soup - personally I'm not someone who fancies onion soup, but this caramelized onion soup has something special to it. Love the generous serving of croutons that comes along with the soup. Poulet's signature dish - Poulet Roti. The combination of the chicken (marinated for 2 days) and mushroom chardonnay sauce was heavenly. The escargot at Poulet was different from those that I had tasted. It wasn't as rich because there was a layer of tomato fondue at the bottom. Their tiramisu was awesome. Covered completely with fine cocoa powder, underneath hide loads of bitter-sweet treasures. The lady's fingers are soaked in rum syrup and coffee. The mascorpone cheese is perfect when eaten together. Price wise it is affordable. …Read More

Genuine Gelato
Alfero Artisan Gelato
2013-05-31
Was hanging out with a few of my friends at Marina Square we decided that we could use some desserts.Alfero Artisan Gelato is one of the rare places in Singapore that sells genuine gelato. From what I know as a foodie, true blue gelato has to be kept in frozen temperatures, and you'd not be able to see the gelato (unless the staff opens the tub for tasting) as its too dense to foam up and sit nicely on a tray for display. So here is it! True blue gelato! We had gula melaka (seasonal flavour), mango sorbet and durian mousse. Gula melaka has a sugary caramel taste that carries a little hint of smokey flavour. Most of my friends love this flavour the most. Mango sorbet was rather average and I prefer eating it with Durian Mousse. Durian Mousse has a stronger flavour that is already good on it's own though. You can even taste chunks of durian meat in the gelato. Noms!Because there were 5 of us, we shared this huge tub of gelato among ourselves at $18 per tub.:) no complains. …Read More

Crazy, Vibrant Concept and Awesome Food
MAD - Modern Asian Diner
2013-05-31
Modern Asian Diner. In short, MAD. This restaurant is a collaboration between TungLok Group, Bar Stories and Dick Lee. Storefront.Bright yellow slab of wall as the storefront is just the tip of the iceberg. I love the vibrant flamboyance of the concept. This is the area where the guests can view and interact with the chefs while the chefs are preparing the food. Breakfast area which will be opening soon. Before the tasting starts, we were offered customized alcohol drinks. My friend told the bartender she wanted something sourish, and sweet at the same time. There's no name for this drink, but it's made up of gin tonic (as the base alcohol), raspberry and lime juice. My other friend told the bartender she'd like something sweet and citrusy as well. And this is made up of light and dark rum as the base alcohol, elderflower and passion fruit. This is my customized drink. I wanted something sweet and fruity. Here's what I got. Vanilla ice cream with fresh strawberries and a gin tonic base. Crispy skin roasted pork belly, frizzled ginger, plum dressing. I find that the crispy pork really goes well with the plum dressing. Other than the frizzled ginger, there were also crispy seaweed sprinkled generously atop. Best eaten together in a mouthful. Wagyu beef and onsen egg with clay pot rice. The strong aroma of truffle assaulted our senses as the waiter set the dish before us. After mixing the rice with the beef and the beef with the egg, the first mouthful was really flavoursome. The truffle oil was really strong and it goes really well with the yolk that was mixed with the rice. Wagyu beef was tender and cooked to perfection. We'd definitely return to MAD again. …Read More

A little disappointed with the broth
NamNam Noodle Bar
2013-05-31
As my office is just around the Orchard area, this is probably the 5th time I returned to NamNam. It seems like the standard has dropped however. I ordered my usual choice of the set lunch that comes with summer rolls, beef pho and iced lotus tea. One of the thing that made me return was the soup broth. Even though there wasn't MSG used in preparing the food, the soup was always flavoursome. However this time when I had the beef pho, the soup wasn't as good as the last few times. Raw sliced beef was placed in the soup to cook and it's best eaten before the beef becomes overcooked. The noodles were still as amazing though. …Read More

Al-Azhar Eating Restaurant
2013-05-30
Al-Azhar has been around for quite some time and I grew up visiting this place since young. I believe this is one of the places a Singaporean will think of when the prata craving comes. Mozzarella cheese prata. It taste 10 times better than the normal cheese prata. Instead of the denser, thicker cheese, mozzarella is more gooey and chewy in texture. Palak Paneer is a dish I always have difficulties looking for at Indian restaurants/eateries. This dish is actually an awesome dip that goes well with naan. Made up of blended spinach and little cubes of Indian cheese, it has a robust taste of cream and spinach (think spinach soup, but more savoury and thicker in texture). Seafood tofu. I really don't like this dish. It doesn't really taste edible when its cooled down to room temperature. Sirloin steak with mushroom sauce. The meat of the sirloin was tough. But really, Al-Azhar is not a place you should come with high expectations on the beef. God knows why I ordered a steak at an Indian restaurant. Anyway, the verdict is that the prata rocks - anything that is non-indian cuisine, it's not really worth risking it. …Read More

Braised Pork Rice!
5 Little Bears
2013-05-30
5 Little Bears at Far East Plaza is a newly open outlet and they serve Taiwanese street food. The interior of the little restaurant is well decorated with their signature dishes written on red lanterns. One might even think he has just stepped into an eatery in Taiwan. This place is relatively crowded during lunch time as there are a lot of offices around the area. 5 Little Bears serves set menus. At $5.90, I can choose to have a bowl of braised pork rice or oyster mee sua with a cup of drink. The braised pork was marinated and thoroughly seasoned. I love that they actually offer scoops of preserved vegetables with the braised pork as it adds layers to the flavours. Would return for more. …Read More

Extraordinary Mee Siam
Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa
2013-05-30
This is the first time I'm came to Hong Lim Food Centre & Market in Chinatown. I'm not really a hawker centre person but when I heard there was a really extraordinary dish at Chinatown, it peaked my interest so much that I just had to try it. Lo & behold - the one and only fruit juice mee siam in the whole of Singapore! Daniel, the owner of Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa, mentioned that he was the one who came out with the innovative idea of adding fruit juice into the mee siam. As I couldn't really take spicy food, I scooped up the dollop of chilli paste before I started eating. The first mouthful of mee siam was really awesome, it was refreshing and spicy at the same time. Full of the flavours of the variety of seafood that was probably prepared together with the broth. I was there with a group of foodies, and we decided to order the large bowl with crayfish, which cost only $6.00. I think it's really worth the price. It came with bits of chicken, fresh prawns (de-shelled), and of course the crayfish. What was seriously missing from the bowl are cockles! Something about fruit juice mee siam that was obviously different from an ordinary bowl of mee siam is that it taste sweeter, less savoury and lacks the cloyingly rich taste of shrimp paste (which some people might prefer that instead of the fruit juice version)I'm torn between choosing the fruit juice version or the ordinary bowl of mee siam to be honest, but I'd definitely return when I have the craving for an innovative twist in my mee siam. …Read More

My Verdict after Q-ing for 2 hours for the food
Tim Ho Wan
2013-05-27
To be honest I have mixed feelings about Tim Ho Wan. As I went just a few days after the grand opening, the queue was really really really long. My friends and I waited for 3 hours to get a seat. Osmanthus Jelly. One of the must haves when you come to Tim Ho Wan. Osmanthus is one of the flower species that can be eaten. I'm not sure if there's any health benefits for consuming them, but they tasted fragrantly yummy. The famous char siew bun from Tim Ho Wan. I have friends who really love this char siew bun that they can order 15 at one go and bring them home to have them for supper. But somehow when I tried the char siew bun, they were not really hitting the right notes for me though. The bun tasted blend and the char siew filling was not as tasty as I imagined them to be at the queue. :(Spring Rolls!!! One of the must haves! I love it! Filled with fresh prawn meat and minced tofu and mayo, the skin was fried till crisp. Char siew cheong fun... What I love about them is the sauce that tend to be a little too salty for me at other dim sum places. But at Tim Ho Wan, the sauce is perfect and the cheong fun is smooth. Steamed chicken in chinese wine. I was surprised that they tasted average. The chicken meat was tender though.I don't really know the exact name of this dish, but to be honest, these are my least favourite among the rest of the dim sum. Siew mai! The meat in the siew mai was tender but the yellow skin tasted a little weird.Beancurd skin roll. It doesn't taste as salty as I thought it would be, and I love it. Har gow... (for what is a dim sum feast if there's no har gow???) The skin of the har gow was a little too thick and floury. Couldn't really taste the prawns in them as they were covered by the taste of the flour. I felt that Tim Ho Wan is just average and it's not worth the queue. I'd only return when the queue disperse. …Read More
