chi ni tou fu
Chi Ni Dou Fu
2013-08-26
The name of this stall immediately got the attention of ours and we ended up buying the cold beancurd dessert from them. There are a few variants available, the original, durian, chocolate, almond etc. I originally wanted the durian soya beancurd but it was sold out so I bought five tubs of almond soya beancurd back home to try. The almond flavour costs $2. The almond soya beancurd is quite strong in the almond taste and almond lovers will surely like this flavour. It is also not too sweet so it is healthier. The texture of the beancurd is smooth and eating it is very effortless as the beancurd just melts in your mouth with every spoonful. I haven't eaten much of other brands' almond beancurd but I just know that the ones by Chi Ni Tou Fu suits me very well. …Read More

Be prepared for a long wait
Mellben Seafood (Ang Mo Kio)
2013-08-25
It is a very very long wait at Melben for our food. We had to queue for around 1 hour before we are finally seated and then wait another 20minutes before our food is finally served. That said, the staff will some around and ask you for your order when you are queuing, so our ordered are placed quite early in the queue. Of the 5 dishes that we ordered, my favourites are the Yam Ring and Salted Egg Crab. The yam ring, although is quite commonly found in other places, I found that the yam ring here is really good. The yam is very very smooth to the taste as it is very well blended and mashed. The exterior of the yam ring is crisp and the batter is not greasy so there is no oily aftertaste. The yam is also well flavoured and the ingredients in the yam ring are also ample. There is a mix of bell peppers, prawns and more. The only slight thing to improve on is the cashew nuts as it is not crisp. The salted egg crab is also very yummy. The balance of saltiness and sweet is just right and it is creamy even. The crab meat is also firm and fresh and it has managed to absorb the salted egg seasoning quite well too. However, the long wait is quite off-putting so it will make me think twice about coming.…Read More

Ayam Penyet
Ayam Penyet Ria
2013-08-25
We haven't tried the ayam penyet before even though we had been to Jurong Point countless of times so we decided to dine in there for our dinner. We did not have long to wait for seats and for our order as we are there quite early. I ordered the Ayam Penyet which is fried chicken and fried tau kwa set while my hubby ordered the Udang Penyet which is fried prawn and fried tau kwa set. Sorry for the smaller photo of my ayam penyet as I accidentally pressed something on my camera and the following shots are all very much smaller. Anyway, the fried chicken is very tasty. Although it is deep fried, but it does not feel greasy and the chicken meat rather tender and moist too. I love their chilli, it is a must have with my rice, the chicken and basically everything. My hubby said his set is good as well, so people who love prawns may want to try the udang penyet. The portion is quite alright, I was full after my meal. I will definitely come back to try other dishes. I think it is around $7.90 for my set. …Read More

Pumpkin cheesecake
TCC - The Connoisseur Concerto
2013-08-24
I went out shopping with my hubby a few weeks back and we stopped by tcc for a light snack as our lunch is not very filling and we are tired from all the walking around. My hubby made the order while I went to find seats. He bought the pumpkin cheesecake as it is quite a novel cheesecake rather than the normal new york cheesecake. The cheesecake's colour is quite vibrant and it looks and smells good. The cheesecake is quite rich in that the cake did not sink with the push of the fork into the cake. On first bite, the pumpkin taste gets to you immediately in a good way. The cake is also not cloyingly sweet and we polished off the entire slice in no time at all. Even my hubby who is not really a pumpkin fan loves it. I am not sure of the price as my hubby paid, but no matter what, I think this is worth a try. …Read More

Must try!
Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hun Restaurant
2013-08-24
This stall is quite famous for the XO fish head bee hoon. It is quite a long wait for our food during weekends and you can see that most empty tables with people are all waiting for their orders to come from this stall. We ordered the prawn paste chicken and the XO fish head bee hoon to share among the three of us. The star is no doubt the XO fish head bee hoon. There is a choice of it being served with fried or sliced fish and we ordered the slice fish. The soup base is really tasty, with depth in the flavour from the hours spent in boiling the soup and I could also distinctively taste the XO alcohol. The fish slices are thick and fresh and firm, and it is a delight eating it with the soup. The ginger slices in the soup helps to balance out the flavours, making the taste of the soup well balanced and non fishy. It is hard to describe how nice it is, you simply have to make a trip down and try it yourself. …Read More

Prima Deli, my choice of bakery to get cakes
PrimaDeli
2013-08-24
I always loved Prima Deli's cakes. Their cakes never disappoint me. So far I have tried most of their range of cakes and I find that their fruit cakes are one of the best that you can get at the price range of $25-$35. Their fruits are always fresh and the amount given is always a lot. This is the Mixed Fruit cake that I had gotten sometime ago. The cake is larger than the normal ones I got because this time, more people are having the cake. This 1kg cake costs $39.80. The exterior of the cake is a light coating of white chocolate. The cake is quite tall and there are a total of 3 layers of cake in the interior, and each layer of cake is separated by cream and fruit cocktail. The sponge cake is moist and soft and the layers of cream are not too excessive so the taste was not too heavy. In addition, the fruit cocktails add a different dimension of taste to the cake. Prima Deli's cakes are still the ones that I will buy anytime whenever there is a special occasion that requires cakes.…Read More

Average lunch with no ++ charges
Pioneer Seafood
2013-08-24
Earlier last week, I went with my hubby to Pioneer Seafood at Tuas for our lunch. They serve chinese food and I think this outlet is newly opened as there are opening specials during the time we went. Since there is only two of us, we ordered two dishes, the homemade beancurd with minced meat and the claypot chicken. The service was rather slow and we had to wait quite a bit before our food came. The claypot chicken arrived first. The portion was quite large and the claypot chicken is very well seasoned. In fact, it is slighty too salty if you just eat it on its own, but it is still alright if you pair it with rice. The chicken meat is tender as well and the only thing to fault it is the saltiness. For the homemade beancurd, the beancurd serving is two pieces so it is just nice for the both of us. The homemade beancurd is very fragrant with an eggy taste and it is very smooth. The minced meat adds flavour to the beancurd but even without the minced meat, I thought that the beancurd is already very tasty on its own. Overall, I thought the service could be better and I may try other chinese restaurants instead of coming back here again. Do note that they do not charge GST and service charge, so that is quite an incentive to come and try their food.…Read More

Ah Yat Restaurant
2013-08-24
Some time back, I went with my relatives to Ah Yat for chinese food. We had ordered quite a number of dishes since there are a total of 8 of us. The service was just alright as it was a weekend and there are quite a lot of other customers in the restaurant which slowed down the service a bit. Since they had promotion on the peking duck, we decided to order it. The peking duck was just normal in my opinion. There is still quite a fair bit of fats on the skin of the duck which made it more greasy than crisp. The dipping sauce for the peking duck is good though, but it is a pity that the chef did not slice the skin more skillfully. The other dishes like the french beans, steamed fish, and fried chicken are just normal tasting. One dish which I found particularly memorable was the fried silver fish. It is actually our appetitiser and it is really addictive popping one after another into my mouth. The whole table liked it so much, we ordered a total of 3 plates of this appetitiser. Overall, the food is average and I will advise against ordering the peking duck if it is not on promotion since the standard is not really there.…Read More

Blackball dessert
BlackBall
2013-08-24
It is my first visit to this dessert stall. It is a Taiwanese dessert stall. As I did not know what to order, I decided to get their signature dessert, the Blackball Signature. I ordered the cold version. There are hot, cold, warm or icy versions to choose from. It is made up of yamQ, yam balls, pumpkin, sweet potato balls, glass jelly, red bean and pearls. The creamer is separately provided, something which I like because I can control how much I want to add to my dessert. The dessert is surprisingly delicious. The grass jelly is very very soft and the yam balls and sweet potato balls are chewy which creates different textures. The red beans are sweet and soft and eating everything together is a burst of flavours and textures. The environment here is rather noisy and the spaces are a little cramped so it is best to have the dessert then go somewhere else if you are planning to have a longer chat.…Read More

Yummy ban mian
Qiu Lian Ban Mian - Kopitiam
2013-08-24
I ordered a piping hot bowl of ban mian from this stall. The ban mian costs $3 and just for change, I ordered the very flat and large noodle which is similar to the kway chap. The large pieces of noodles needs a little while to get used to and eating it with a spoon is definitely easier than eating it with chopsticks. The noodles are not too thick so even though it is a large piece, it is quite easy to chew and swallow. The soup is also delicious, it is light tasting and I didn't feel too thirsty after drinking much of the soup. The ingredients given are quite reasonable for the price of $3 as well, with an egg, vegetables and minced meat. Overall, it is a good choice to fill your stomach.…Read More

Yong tau foo
Yong Tau Foo
2013-08-23
I ordered a bowl of yong tau foo to have a lighter lunch but I could not resist ordering the with curry since it has been a very long while since I had curry yong tau foo. I ordered a total of 6 items and the yellow noodle. The variety of items offered are quite a lot, I got for myself an egg, tau pok, egg tofu, lady finger and two other fried items. The curry is quite nice. It is not very coconutty nor very spicy so the taste does not feel as heavy or robust as normal curry. Nevertheless, I felt that the taste is quite suited for the yong tau foo. The yong tau foo items are as what I would expect them to be. I thought the fried items are quite tasty as well after having soaked up the curry soup. Next time I will try their normal yong tau foo soup. …Read More

Traditional desserts
Ah Balling
2013-08-22
Traditional desserts like these are hard to find nowadays so I will always order it whenever I come across a stall selling it. The tang yuan is served with peanuts soup $2. There is a choice of tang yuan, they have different flavlours like peanut, sesame, yam, green tea and red bean. I ordered a mix of all their flavours and it is a delight biting into each tang yuan and tasting five different fillings. The tang yuan is quite normal, but the star had to be the peanuts soup as it is their unique selling oint. The peanuts are soft and it gives a nutty and earthly taste to the soup. The soup is not too sweet so overall, the dessert is very enjoyable. I definitely preferred this than the dessert that my hubby ordered from another stall. …Read More

Fish Soup
Teochew Fish Porridge
2013-08-22
Recently I have been trying to eat more healthily outside so I try to order soup based dishes if I eat out. I saw this hawker centre selling fish soup, so I made that my dinner choice. There is no queue so I was able to get my order very quickly. The fish soup costs $4, rice is at an additional 50 cents. I added another bowl of rice for my little niece to eat. The fish soup did not really look very appetitsing and I guess the appearance of the food does matter as I felt the taste is not there. The fish slices are tough to the bite and the amount given is also quite little. I counted only around 6 slices of fish and the slice is quite small as well. The soup also has tomato slices, some lettuce and tofu. The tofu is also very little, only two small cubes. I would think it is not worth the $4 paid for the soup.…Read More

Nice and affordable rice
Mixed Vegetable Rice - Houseman's Canteen
2013-08-22
For this entire week, I was at Changi Hospital to visit a relative. The foodcourt is quite small and during lunch it is very crowded so I takeaway my lunch up the ward. This mixed vegetable rice stall has one of the longest queue during lunch time as its food is priced very affordably. An order of 2 veg + 1 meat is only $2.50. I ordered the sliced meat, steamed egg and sliced potatoes which cost $2.50. The food may not look too appetising but the taste is quite good. There is some sliced meat gravy on the rice which helps to make the rice more delicious. The portion given is good too, I didn't end up with eating just white rice towards the end of the meal. Of the three dishes, my favourite is the sliced meat. It is especially tender and the seasoning is very yummy. I could just eat rice with it as the only ingredient. The steamed egg is also tasty, but a little to the salty side. Overall, it is an affordable lunch which explains the crowd.…Read More

Nice but expensive
Ladurée
2013-08-21
I am not really a large fan of maracons, but since we are already in the shop, we decided to just buy two of the flavours to try. Part of the reason why I was more willing to try is also because there are only two customers in front of us, so we could get our orders very quickly. There is a very very large variety of flavours from exotic to more common ones. The more exotic onces would be the chocolate coconut marshmallow , marie antoinette and chocolate yuzu. I think some of them are seasonal flavours.Anyway, we are not really adventurous so we chose the safer flavours, the coffee and salted caramel. Each cost $3.80 which is one of the most expensively priced maracon. For the taste, we thought it was really very nice as the maracon is not overly sweet and we could taste the distinct flavour of each maracon, we could taste the hint of bitterness from the coffee and the salted caramel. The maracon shells are crisp and the inside is soft. I would prefer it to have more bite as it felt like the maracon just melts in my mouth too quickly. Nonetheless, I guess the high price will deter me from buying casually as it is really quite expensive. …Read More
