Meat was really fresh
Suki-Ya
2013-04-26
Went to Suki Ya at Bugis+ and had the dinner buffet. We were given a selection of 2 soups and we chose the sweet soy sauce soup base and the spicier kimchi soup base.Overall, the sweet soy sauce soup base was too sweet and sickening and we didn't eat much from that side of the steamboat. I had expected something more savory, however this may suit those who like the sweeter taste. However, it goes really well with the Japanese Daikon (something like white radish) and they have an abundance of it.The kimchi soup base is much more tangy and satisfying. It wasn't spicy at all and the soup went really well with the meat and vegetable selection. We also ordered the additional Wagyu beef at $7.99++ and it looked great. Look at the marbling of the beef! It went down really well so if you can spare the budget, do give it a try.Otherwise, the other meat selections were v fresh too. They emphasize on their shabu shabu meats and true enough, the pork, chicken and beef were cut thin and ready for the shabu. The colours of the meat was just fantastic. It tasted really good with whichever sauce you desire. There wasn't much of a seafood selection in this restaurant which is quite a bummer, but they make up for it with the meats. There are also the usual steamboat ingredients such as meatballs, seafood balls, and this faux lobster meat as pictured below. My bf thought it was real and took quite a few, only to be disappointed. It tasted good anyway.I like that the restaurant wasn't too crowded and not stuffy at all like a lot of steamboat restaurants out there. Do give it a try if you are a fan of meat shabu shabu. …Read More

Really liked the bamboo wine
Bene Spaghetti
2013-04-05
Met up with some friends for a dinner at Bene Spaghetti and since it was a new restaurant, we tried quite a few dishes out of their set meal and was pleasantly surprised at the variety and the taste. Firstly, the service was awesome and we were nicely greeted by the Japanese boss and the local waiters. We were given the menu and to call the waiter to order, we have to wave a wooden clapper then they would come. It was really cute!We ordered the set meal enough for 4 persons.Starters was a simple salad tossed with vinaigrette as well as soft white bread bun that they baked themselves. Main dish: Blue Cheese Cream Sauce Mushi PastaIt was served in a really cute way and it was still cooking when it was served. There was a timer for 5 minutes upon serving and when the timer is up, the waitress would open up the cover and wow, the blue cheese cream sauce smell heavenly. It was my favourite of all main dishes and the spaghetti was al dente and the sauce fragrant. Must try.Main dish: Seafood risottoLove the mix of seafood inside the risotto and it was slightly soupy which I didn't mind. The risotto also comes which a basil-sesame mix which is optional, and I find that mixed into the rice it made it extra fragrant. Main dish: Tomato Sauce Gnocchi GratinI'm not a fan of Gnocchi but I feel it was cooked just nice and the taste of the gratin was really good.. The tomato sauce was very fragrant. For dessert, we had Tiramisu that was included in the set meal (not pictured). However, we decided to add on the Bamboo white wine which tasted so awesome! It tastes of light white wine with bits of light grape fruit sweetness. It was served in a Bamboo jar which was really cute and very japanese.End of the dinner, we were warmly greeted farewell and as a gift, we were each given a small loaf of the bread they baked themselves, I assume because they don't serve overnight bread and thus will give the extras away. It was really pleasant and I would want to visit the restaurant again.…Read More

good cold dishes and Udon
Kazokutei
2013-04-01
Went to Kazokutei for a casual dinner last Sunday and ordered the Sashimi bento set, which consists of Sashimi (salmon, scallop, crab, prawns) on a bed of sushi rice, Mixed tempura, and a small bowl of UdonThe tempura failed to impress as it wasn't that crispy and it obviously isn't their specialty. The Udon was served in a small bowl of tasty soup and the noodle was soft.. Softer than the usual cheap Udon one would usually get which are probably frozen in the fridge for some time. Can taste that this Udon was handmade.Love the Sashimi bowl! The seafood combination were really fresh, something which I didn't quite expect and the sushi rice below had a soft vinegar taste, not overwhelming at all. The proportion of the rice to the sashimi was really good too, not too much rice at all. It's overall not a huge portion of food but it satisfies in terms of taste and it was filling enough.…Read More

Platypus Kitchen
2013-03-20
So for a small friends gathering we ended up at Platypus kitchen (i think, previously known as V8 cafe) and the revamp is quite refreshing focusing on pasta and some other main courses. We ordered the pressed pork belly for sharing and although I haven't tried many pork bellies before, this one simply melted in my mouth and left a silky pork fragrance. The skin could be a little more crispy but it is good enough. A must have for pork lovers and those who don't mind the fats. I would recommend this for sharing. The chicken pesto wasn't that great choice as it tasted a little odd, but still v fragrant. I love the texture of the sauce and I find that the pasta is quite nicely cooked. The chicken was in abundance and it wasn't spicy.. The pesto left a good taste in my mouth. The set meal costs $19.90 including a drink and soup, which was quite alright, just adding $2 or $3 more to the ala carte price. Overall the service was efficient and I find the place good for gatherings.…Read More
