Both me and my girlfriend decided to go City Hall for some windows shopping and dinner straight after work on Thursday (18 April 2013). We meet at City hall MRT station, going through the City Link underground mall, we passed by a few stalls.Along the way, we passed by a restaurant who had a staff (Uncle type) trying to get customer to come eat in their restaurant, we took a look at the menu and the staff was very friendly and was able to introduce some of their plus point to dine at their restaurant. The restaurant served different kinds of dishes including finger food and main course like western or pasta and etc. I think one of the plus point which made us dine in the place is their free flow of soft drinks (Carbonated type so I did not drink any) and “Soup of the Day” for each set meal ordered (There are free wireless too but is not one of the plus point to me). In term of pricing, they are considering on the value type. They do not accept Credit Card payment but accept NETS / EZ-LINK / CASHThe restaurant itself was not very big so in term of seating space, the tables between each other are actually quite close with each other making it not as easy (But still manageable) to walk around the place. The staff was very efficient in clearing up the tables when customer leave the place to allow more customer to come in for their dinner. After ordering our meals at the counter and made payment on the spot, we proceed to self service to take our soup and drinks (Soup, soft drinks and some sauces are self-service from a counter). To our surprise, they served nice soup. The soup of the day is “Cream of Carrot and Vegetable” which to me was good and not too bad for a free flow soup. There were already not a lot of soup left (The restaurant never refill since it was near closing time when we dine there) but still, we were able to drink at least 2 bowls of the soup each which made us quite warm up for our main course. As a fish lovers, my girlfriend order the Chef Special Set Meal of Grilled Salmon Fish which served with Salad, Mashed Potato & Sausages. In terms of price wise, I think it is still quite worth the cost with their salmon giving quite a big portion (Other places is smaller and thinner). The salmon are nicely grilled which makes the skin of the salmon become quite crispy which Rachel loves a lot. The meat itself was still quite juicy inside. Mashed Potato and the rest of the side dishes I would say normal of a standard.I ordered a Grilled chicken and actually for the taste wise, it is not spicy at all except some of the nice pepper taste which I love it.The chicken meat was quite tender and easy to bite without much toughness. I do not really like the thickness of the chicken skin though as it seems very fattening (Did not eat those skin). For this dish, I can get side dishes of Fluffy Rice and choice of either salad (Which I chosen it) or mashed potatoes. The meal also allows me to add another $2.50 if I wish to have one scoop of New Zealand Ice-cream which I did not order. continue reading

Past by this new restaurant, I seldom come around here, so this is new for me. Something that caught my attention was the FRIES! I just ordered a small size of the fries for take away. There have many different dips to choose from, it was hard for me to decide. haha! I choose the Inferno Cheese Dip + additional $1 for the mayonnaise. The fries tasted not bad. Paste on the cheese dip is really flavorful and delicious, will come back again to try others dish. continue reading

Went to rock & ash once and I brought my friends there because of the rather affordable set meal (less than $10 each after 20% discount), although it might have been a wrong choice because they ran out of olive rice and we were heavily spammed with fries instead So make sure to be there earlier because they ran out of sides pretty fast, except for the fries. We went there at around 8pm. We ordered 2 dips medium fries and they gave us another complimentary small one because they ran out of a lot of things. But we didn’t finish because our mains had fries as well, which we didn't know! Our dips were Spicy BBQ, Garlic Mayo, and a Nancho cheese which was complimentary. All mains come with a set of free flow drink and free flow of soup. Yes you heard it! FREE FLOW! But the soup of the day, mushroom soup, was a tad disappointing though. I supposed it's because the soup was finishing and we got a lot of sediments from the bottom of the pot. I ordered a fried dory fish for myself and I didn’t really like it because it seems to be heavily deep fried. I had to scrap off the fried outer layer else I would have ulcers. The fried dory fish itself wasn't very big already, and after scrapping off the skin, it was even smaller. But I really like my coleslaw though! Anyway for all our food we spent a total of $38! Which is less than $10 per person! My friend had the beef burger which I really recommend!! The meat was so succulent and juicy I regretted not ordering that instead. The staff were quite apologetic that they ran out of some of the sides that we wanted, so they gave us the complimentary fries without telling us and at that time we already ordered our fries, so we ended up with too much fries. continue reading

One of my friends suggested dining here for dinner as there is a set promo which includes a main together with drink, soup and fries. I had the grilled fish as my main, which came together with a side salad and fries. The fish tasted very ordinary. We forgot that our mains came together with fries and so we all bought 2 extra cups of fries and ended up having a hard time trying to finish those. Anyway, they have quite a lot of different dips such as inferno cheese, wasabi mayo, garlic mayo, black pepper, zesty lemon etc, even chocolate! We took about 4-5 different dips and I like the garlic mayo dip. One of my friends had their burger and it look really good. I guess the highlight of this shop are there burgers and fries! continue reading

Rock & Ash may sound like it’s from the pre-historic era where cavemen will rub 2 pieces of rock together to spark up fire for cooking. However, at this cosy-casual diner over at the Marina Square extension underpass, they have something interesting besides the usual Western cuisine. My friend and I decided to have dinner over here as we were attracted to the American cafe style of setting.Don’t you just dread the usual sub-standard, blend-tasting cream of mushroom soup as the starter? Their home made Potato Soup with cheese and bacon bits ($3.90) is sure to excite your taste buds. The soup has a light creamy texture and the potatoes comes in huge chunky slices. I love the bacon bits which went so well with the soup which has a light cheesy taste. It’s sure a hearty start of a meal for me. Their signature Meatballs ($5.80) is one of the more popular dishes on the menu which never fails to sensationalize my taste buds. The juicy and succulent beef balls coated in the creamy sauce and Lingonberry jam is simply so irresistible! Having only 1 of it is never enough. I could finish all of them myself! For main couse, I had their Dory Fish Fillet ($12.90 comes with soft drinks) which also has a generous serving. Forget about the usual tartar sauce as the fish is coated with zesty lemon curd sauce when served. Similar to the chicken, it uses the same herb marinate and is served with coleslaw and French fries. At the first thought, the lemon curd sauce maybe use to cover up the stale taste of the fish if it is not fresh. Pushing that thought aside, I had a bite into the dory fillet. To my pleasant surprise, the dory fish fillet was pretty nice and the lemon curd sauce complements the fish well. It is slightly sour yet appetizing and not too overwhelming. On weekdays, the restaurant is very spacious and quiet. They have free Wi-Fi and power-points perfect for students to hang out and study here while tucking into their French fries with a variety of sauces to choose from. Wash it down with a cup of hot tea or coffee, making this a nice chill-out spot to catch up with friends in a cosy atmosphere over home-style food. continue reading
