See my full reviews & photos at = http://chefquak.com/2015/04/02/my-favoruite-wah-kee-big-prawn-noodles-on-2apr2015/a friend had to go for big prawn noodles today. not sure where the sudden cravings came from. we were at first planning to go to why eat har, a very good new big prawn noodle house started by a mutual friend’s brother. but was told that he was away & the stall was closed today.anyhow, we decided to go to wah kee big prawn noodles at pek kio food centre at cambridge road. i was there at 11.30am today, a thursday, 2.4.2015 (wah kee is closed on mondays). this has always been my favourite big prawn noodles stall though i had not been here many years. i queued for 30mins+ & we waited another 5 mins for noodles to be ready. the “famous” lady serving told us that the prawns today were too big for S$10, and she had to charge S$15. we decided to take her suggestion to order 2 bowls S$5 & 2 bowls S$15 for 4 of us. wah kee has always served the large prawns in a separate metal pot. looked impressive but more important of course was how good it tasted. the prawns for S$15 were huge, probably >100g each, fresh and excellent. in my memory which was really quite many years back the S$10 prawns were also very big. anyway, it was quite ok just to try. i am not sure though i would want to pay S$15 for this if i come again. we asked for additional haebeehiam chilli. i added a bit to the noodles. the noodles & chilli mix was excellent, though the lady totally forgotten i ordered beehoon mee & we got 4 bowls of just mee instead. for me, though why eat har’s chilli was also very good, wah kee’s haebeehiam chilli was really superb. we suspected that haebeehiam chilli was added which gave the large prawn soup (usual S$10 or today’s S$15) a lot more intense flavours than the S$5 soup. the total dining experience (& by that i meant only the food visuals, flavours, texture, excluding ambience & service) was excellent, indeed the soup & large prawns are something i can think & crave for. if i compare just the S$5 prawn noodles for wah kee, why eat har & ah hui, wah kee’s chilli was better, soup thereabout or better, so wah kee would still be tops. wah kee & ah hui had 2 prawns, whereas why eat har had 3, and ah hui’s prawns were smaller than wah kee’s. so if i want the big prawns, it’s wah kee, if i want the S$5 prawns, it’s wah kee or if i want more value then why eat har, and if i want pig’s tail together with prawns, then ah hui. but all 3 are good for repeat visits.^^ continue reading

Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles 華記大蝦麵 has reopened again!!If you are a prawn noodle fanatic, you would have probably hear of Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles 華記大蝦麵. I heard so much about it that I knew I had to give it a try one day. Previously, I made two trips to Pek Kio Food Centre (where this stall is located) for this. However, on both occasions the stall was closed indefinitely as the owner had went for an eye operation. A few weeks ago, I heard that the stall had reopened! Hence, I made another trip down just for this. Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles 華記大蝦麵 specialises in serving prawn noodles. The Prawn Noodles were available in $3, $5, $8 and $10. Big (Jumbo) prawns are served for the $8 and $10 versions. When I got there at 930am on a weekday, I was surprised to see a short queue of just 6 person in front of me. I have read so much about the slow moving queue and mentally prepared to wait patiently. Thankfully, two persons in front of me dropped off. Hence, I just had to waited for around 20 minutes (4 person in front) before it was my turn. Prawn Noodles $10I ordered the $10 Prawn Noodles with Mee Pok. It came with a packet of tissue paper. The jumbo prawns were served separately in a metal dish. Mee Pok (dry)The owners were very generous with the fried shallots and pork lard. As a result, the Mee Pok (dry) was so tasty. In addition, the beansprouts at the bottom added a nice crunch. I understand that the owners fried the shallots and pork lard themselves as they wanted to ensure quality was not compromised. Jumbo PrawnsThree jumbo prawns were served together with the soup in a metal dish. Jumbo PrawnsOne reason why the queue was so slow moving was because the owner only prepares the prawns when customers orders to ensure that the prawns remained fresh. He would then proceed and deshell the middle portion of the prawn. Moreover, slice it partially in the middle to devein it. Jumbo PrawnsThe star of the dish (i.e. the prawns) did not disappoint. They were oh-so extremely huge, fresh and succulent. Superb! The soup was unique too. Besides being tasty and full of essence of the prawns, it was accompanied with a hint of sweet, spicy and garlic flavour. It was so good that I drank the whole bowl and brought the empty bowl requesting for a refill. I am sure they did not add any MSG in it as I did not feel thirsty after drinking two bowls of soup.I left feeling satisfied and happy. Glad that I finally tried Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles. As I was leaving, I was shocked to see that the queue had stretched to more than 10 persons long. I wonder how long they would need to wait. http://foodiefc.blogspot.sg/2013/12/wah-kee-big-prawn-noodles-pek-kio-food.html continue reading

Wah Kee Big Prawn Mee occupies a stall in the Pek Kio Market and Food Centre, and honestly speaking, this is the first time in our lives visiting this food centre and we had no clue where it was at first. The food centre is actually hidden in one of the small estates near the Serangoon area, with few HDB units making up the small community. Yet another happy discovery by The Glutton Family! We tried the $5 dry version prawn mee and the $10 big prawn soup version. The broth was good but how about the mee? We came with high expectations but the dry prawn mee was mediocre, the chili sauce was too bland and the sourness from the excessive vinegar overpowered everything in the bowl of prawn mee. Though the mee has the right texture and the prawns were fresh, however, the four of us agreed that this is too far off the mark to be confidently called a good prawn mee. Please refer to www.ieatandeat.com for details review. continue reading

I am not an expert at prawn noodles as I rarely have them when dining outside but I must say that the prawn noodles $5 here are really good. Wah Kee is quite a famous stall for prawn noodles which could be seen from the advertisements on its stall. The prawn noodles can be ordered with soup or dry and I ordered the dry version. The noodles are tossed with some gravy, oil and chilli and topped with fried onion. The resulting combination is one bowl of absolutely tasty noodles. As for the prawns, they are very large and fresh. For me, the most important thing is that the prawns must be fresh because that is when the meat is firm and very fresh prawns will not have the fishy taste. The prawns here hit the notes all on the right spots - fresh, succulent and savoury. The soup is also very tasty from the long hours of boiling the prawn heads. I had to resist the temptation to finish the entire bowl of soup. continue reading

The FoodI ordered the $10 Big Prawn noodles served with lot of lards, Kang Kong and crispy fried shallots. The noodles were lightly sauced with some seasoning, pleasantly nice and blended very well with the noodles and chilli. For the $10 portion, I get three king size prawns and were very fresh, juicy and tasty. The soup tasted so unique and is certainly one of best tasting soup I ever tasted in a prawn mee.The PriceReasonably priced at $10.00 for King Sized Prawns !!OverallI will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this! continue reading
