2010-08-03
Hey peeps! As you know, Singapore will be hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from 14 to 26 August 2010, so OpenRice is joining the fan fare and will be featuring a whole series of scrumptious food available around each sporting venue! How exciting is that? Well, with a whopping number of participants which include 5,000 athletes and officials from the 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), along with estimated 1,200 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers, and 320,000 spectators, we can expect lots and lots of hungry tummies. First up this week is the Kallang Field and Kallang Tennis Centre. With archery and tennis events at these two venues, get ready for lots of zooomm! Whamm! Swooosh! Well, if you are planning to take a short walk to the Kallang Field or Kallang Tennis Centre after alighting at Kallang MRT, how about grabbing a quick dessert at Mr Bean to beat the heat? The Soya Ice Cream is a hit among health-conscious people who also have a penchant for ice cream. With only 9.50g of sugar and 4.79g of fats per serving (100g), you can have more than one helping!
Mr Bean's Roasted Soya Nuts and Soya Ice Cream is a hit among healthy snackers
Besides, the lowest sugar and fats content ice cream in the market, Singapore’s leading chain soya bean food & beverage retailer certainly has more to offer. If you need a healthy snack to munch on while catching the games, try the Roasted Soya Nuts. Rather than picking dry roasted peanuts as a snack, soya nuts have half the fats and double the protein! Say aye aye to fresh and delectable yummies with rich nutritional value at Mr Bean! On your way to Stadium Crescent, you may wish to grab lunch over at Kallang Leisure Park. Located at level four of Singapore’s brand new Mega-Entertainment Centre, Nihon Mura offers a lavish spread of Japanese Cuisine, such as sushi, sashimi, appetizers, stonepot rice, tempura, grilled items, desserts and specially concocted beverages. Indulge in more than 60 varieties of sushi selling at only $1.19 per plate and be sure to savour the “MUST TRY” items which include King Prawns Tempura, Jumbo Roll, Asparagus Bacon, Enoki Bacon, Soft Shell Crab and air-flown salmon sashimi!
Get your serving of fresh air-flown salmon sashimi at Nihon Mura!
Do you know that Nihon Mura has a special method of food ordering? Place your orders using ice-cream sticks as you walk past each stall, deciding which dishes to order. Nihon Mura’s open concept kitchen also allows you to catch their chefs in action. Isn’t that interesting?

We think it is cool to enjoy piping hot and fresh delicacies while dining in a beautifully furnished traditional Japanese environment. Isn't it? By the way, for those who are alighting at Mountbatten MRT, you are just a stone's throw away from Long Beach Seafood Restaurant, the original creator of Singapore’s world famous and best Black Pepper Crab in 1982. Their legendary black pepper crab reveals a perfect marriage of spicy black pepper and succulent crab meat! As such, the dish has been hailed among Singapore’s top national dishes.
Behold, the legendary Black Pepper Crab!
Another must order at Long Beach is the Air Flown Live Alaskan King Crab, which has become increasingly popular for its succulent, juicy and firm meat.
Classic White Pepper Live Alaskan King Crab
The best way to serve this crab is to have it stir fried with white pepper, which adds a tantalizing zing with just that right amount of spiciness. Sashimi lovers can look forward to the Air Flown Live Canadian Geoduck Sashimi or the Air Flown Live Australian Lobster Sashimi with Superior Stock Steamboat. Other exotic seafood offerings include the Golden Stripe Lobster which was created with an original recipe in 1991, Live Tiger Sea Mantis with Golden Garlic, and Fragrant Mouse Cowrie. The Scottish Bamboo Clams, which are fresh and tender, is a must try for all clam lovers as well! Those of you, who are keen to explore further down the road, check out Old Airport Road Food Centre for various local hawker delights which are sure to satisfy your palate. Adventurous eaters out there MUST patronize the Crocodile Kingdom. This store is one of the very few restaurants in Singapore which specialises in crocodile meat. Its signature dish is the Crocodile Paw which tastes better than it looks!
Oh, touchy!
According to Mr.Lee, crocodile meat offers a whole range of benefits as a traditional tonic. Besides improving blood circulation, relieving rheumatism, strengthening immune system and aiding detoxification, it also delays aging! If you have plans to try the Crocodile Paw, do remember to call a day in advance as this delicacy needs extra preparation time. Getting sick of the special lip-sticking quality of fat and flesh from the crocodile paw? Help yourself to refreshing glass of sugarcane juice with lemon from Cool Cafe. Otherwise, make your way to Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow for a piping hot plate of Char Kway Teow. One of Singapore’s favourite dishes, this stir-fried delight comes with a dollop of the potent spicy sambal belacan! Do request more of the specially prepared sambal belacan only if you are sure that it will all end up in your tummy. The cook is really uptight about people wasting her MUST TRY spicy condiment of dried shrimp paste and chillies that is bound to tease any taste buds. Well, I have to agree with her that wastage of food especially secret recipes is super uncool. For other local dishes, check out Albert Street Prawn Noodles. Well known for the big prawns, this store is definitely worth queuing for especially with its long heritage and sweet, rich broth.
Albert Street Prawn Noodles
Established since 1963, it serves prawn noodles with a twist of the pig's tail. Literally. Check this out.
Pig's tail at Albert Street Prawn Noodles. Any takers?
Food aside, do you know that the Kallang Field was upgraded and converted to host the archery competitions during the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games? How about the fact that the Kallang Tennis Centre is equipped with 14 courts and 2,000 temporary seating stands were built around the main court for fans and the media? Nifty details. I bet it will be a blast for those of you who will be catching the archery and tennis games at the Kallang Field and Kallang Tennis Centre. Hurrah! Kallang Field and Kallang Tennis Centre are located along Stadium Crescent Singapore 387639. Both venues are within the vicinity of Kallang MRT station, Mountbatten MRT station, Boon Keng MRT station and Stadium MRT station.
