The Boy Named Cupid
2012-02-07
We all know him as this mischievous little boy (often portrayed wearing diapers) who makes couples fall in love by piercing their hearts with arrows. Because of his nature, his name has become closely associated that lovey dovey feeling you have with someone, especially during Saint Valentine’s Day.
Cupid has been heavily with associated with desire and passion. On the day of hearts, he remains to be the most popular icon which best represents love. As such, images of him would always be splashed everywhere from greeting cards, posters, and banners. At romantic restaurants, they would also use decorations portraying this little boy. The son of Venus, Roman goddess of love, this mortal child with wings is never without a bow and arrow. When he sees couples, he would usually pierce their hearts with this to make them fall in love. It’s been said that he always carries with him two types of arrows: one has a gold tip which is used for true love while the lead tip is just for desire and passion. The Romans stated that he also fell in love when he accidentally wounded himself with his own arrow. It all happened when his mum, Venus, became jealous of this lovely girl named Psyche. She then asked her son to shoot her with an arrow so she would fall in love with a commoner. While he sneaked inside her room, he scratched himself and so, he fell head over heels with her. Eventually, the two end up together and have a child named Voluptas. With Valentine's Day nearing, be sure to see images of this little boy making hearts fall in love with one another.
