Mooncakes are indispensable pastries during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Though there are no historical records stating how these were created, one legend states that the Chinese created these mooncakes during the Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1280-1368). When the Mongols invaded China, they established the Yuan Dynasty and put the country under their oppressive rule. The leaders of the previous dynasty, the Sung Dynasty (A.D.960-1280), were unhappy with what their country had come to. And so, under Chu Yuan Chang’s leadership, they established a strategy to overthrow the invaders. They ordered bakers to create mooncakes which contained an outline of the planned revolt and the date of attack. On the night of the Moon Festival, the rebels successfully overthrew the rulers.
