While Hello Kitty lovers in Singapore have had their obsessions fed with collectible plush toys and an upcoming carnival, people in Hong Kong are going head over heels for another famous character from Sanrio – lazy egg, Gudetama. Two weeks ago, a long-awaited collaboration between Gudetama and DIM SUM ICON finally came to reality with the launch of nine new items on the restaurant’s menu, including three dim sum dishes: Gudetama egg yolk buns (HKD 49), Gudetama custard tarts (HKD 39) and Gudetama Prawn Dumplings (HKD 49). Related: New Dim Sum Menu at Yum Cha Don’t be surprised when you see a sleepy-looking orange ball of lotus custard sitting on your custard tart. And to resemble the colour of Gudetama, egg yolk is used to transform the translucent hargao skin into a vivid orange tone.

Non-dim sum dishes such as Prawn Burger (HKD 59), Caesar Salad (HKD 59) and Fried Rice with Bacon (HKD 69) are also accompanied by a special Gudetama sunny side up egg. If you thought the mains were too cute to be eaten, wait till you see the desserts!

Already a popular choice amongst patrons, the Gudetama Milk Pudding (HKD 39) comes topped with pudding made from fresh mangoes. And held in delicate egg shells are egg puddings available in original (HKD 39) and mango (HKD 49) flavours. Note: Gudetama prawn dumpling and egg pudding will only be available starting September.

If you think about it, all there is to these adorable creations is an edible Gudetama sticker, which brings the boring egg yolk alive – albeit as a lazy, lifeless egg character. Still, nothing is stopping the biggest Gudetama fans from flocking over for a photo opportunity.
