Mitzo: Contemporary Cantonese Dining (with Cocktails)

For a hotel guest – or anyone for that matter – who wanders into Mitzo, it is almost impossible to discern just what cuisine this restaurant serves. Japanese moniker and a chic modern interior aside, your best guess comes once noticing the pairs of chopsticks on each table.

This latest addition to Grand Park Orchard Hotel currently doles out a breakfast buffet in the mornings for guests, before flipping the switch after to reveal its second identity: a contemporary Cantonese restaurant complete with two cocktail bars – one with a jellyfish tank – and chill-out lounge music in the background.

For cocktails, a dedicated section of the menu features ones that incorporate Asian herbs, spices and even traditional Chinese medicine. The Sze Chuan Bull Shot (pictured right) for example, was served in a teapot for four to share. In bold red, it tastes savoury – much like a soup – before you get that burn down your throat.

New Signatures Set Menu

Out of the four set menus available, we got to try the Signatures Set Menu ($108++), which comprises eight courses that are best shared between parties of two or more. On the whole, the selection had a balanced number of hits and misses. Comfort food arrives in two forms here: the Braised Vermicelli with scallops, prawn and cod fish and the Mitzo Lobster Bisque with poached scallop. The former could very well work as a meal on its own. More interestingly though, is the Mitzo Special Barbecued Pork (pictured above). Over the fatty layer of each chunky char siew block, is a grainy glaze of sugar – a unique touch that could be too sweet for some. The Deep-Fried Dim Sum Platter however, did not impress. Despite the innovative take and plating, the thousand layer radish puff, crispy glutinous pumpkin in custard and bread coated shrimp and foie gras each had a batter too thick for my liking.
mitzo dessert
Dim sum disappointments aside, dessert was a stunner. On my right sat a cup of Chilled Avocado Milk Shake (pictured above) with a dollop of vanilla ice cream on top. To my relief, the consistency of the milkshake was surprisingly light and airy – a much-needed respite after a heavy meal. On my left, was a Fried Sesame Dumpling (pictured above) that when bitten, surprises you with a warm chocolate liqueur filling. Think tang yuan with a Baileys filling. Individually, I loved these dessert creations, but whether or not they make a good pairing is still a head-scratcher to me.
