Tin Hill Social: Hay Smoked Dishes in a Barn

Tin Hill Social is impressively spacious with 5 areas spread across 2 repurposed stables: an indoor dining area, alfresco area, garden, indoor bar, and outdoor bar. But never mind the numbers - its cavernous interior of high vaulted ceilings and wooden beams (which houses the indoor dining area) gives off a casual, languorous vibe that makes it the ideal place to unwind. With the concept of community in mind, the restaurant and bar serves a number of their dishes in sharing portions and holds pop quizzes every alternate Thursday.

One of the bigger dishes is the Beef T-Bone ($70), a whooping 600g of T-bone steak with 2 sides of your choice. Although the meat was a healthy shade of pink, it came across as slightly tough and chewy.

Instead, another dish carnivores might find more favourable is the Hay Smoked Pork Ribs ($26), which showcases Tin Hill Social’s signature cooking technique of hay smoking. The meat fell off the bone easily, and carried enjoyable hints smokiness.

If you’re dining in a smaller group, we’d recommend the Seafood Stew ($30). With its smorgasbord of seafood including fresh black cod, prawns, calamari, clams and mussels swimming in an herby and slightly spicy lobster bisque, this is one item you have to try.

Desserts at Tin Hill Social are taken very seriously; they are baked in-house daily, and some are unique creations by the chef himself. One such example is the Mango Chilli Pie ($15), paired with ice-cream and coconut sago. It looks like your common McDonald’s Apple Pie, but a bite into this reveals a sweet mango filling and a kick of spiciness. While novel and experimental, this seems to be more of an acquired taste.

On the other hand, the Chocolate Cherry Cake ($9 per slice) is an easy favourite with a cherry compote centre and crunchy hazelnut praline base reminiscent of Ferrero Rocher. A note, though: its large portion can make it rather heavy on the palate, so it’ll be good to share.
