I accompanied my mother to HDB Hub for some health talk recently. Prior to the talk, we had our lunch at Toa Payoh HDB Hub. There are many new stalls and the entire place looks very different from what I remember of it. I was attracted by the Taipei Night Market stall as it is a stall that immediately stands out from the rest of the stalls with the catchy sign. I ordered the lu rou fan or braised meat rice which comes with an egg for $4. The bowl of rice is really petite and I was concerned initially that it may not be enough. However, it is quite filling actually, probably because the rice is unlike our normal white rice. The rice seemed to be denser. The gravy is very savoury with the rice and the meat is very tender. It just breaks apart easier as I chew on it. The bits of fats in the meat is not excessive as well, so it didn't feel too greasy biting into it. I was almost expecting the egg yolk to be runny as it felt a little like I was eating a don, but of course, the eggs are the normal fully boiled eggs. Overall, the dish is tasty though a little expensive as the meat is very little.
