I have always been fond of the casual European dining experience that Ambush offered. And previously, before the new outlet at Plaza Singapura, I was just constantly hobnobbing at the Takashimaya outlet enjoying a Bratwurst + Rosti combi or a seafood paella.So it came as quite a pleasant surprise to me when the new Ambush at Plaza Singapura offered a slightly different and more extensive menu. I picked the Mixed Pot aka Moules/Palourde aka Mussels and Clams. You could customize your order, choosing the size of the pot (small or large at $15 or $18 respectively) as well as the style with which your mixed pot is prepared.My choice was the Vin Blanc and Smoked Streaky Bacon, consisting of a base of white wine, flavoured with onion, garlic and parsley, and added bacon bits. The Mixed pot was served with a cupful of thick cut fries which I dipped occasionally into the broth for added flavour.Overall, delighted with this latest find at Ambush, Plaza Singapura. It was indeed an honour to be invited by online dining guide, Openrice.com for a food tasting session at Ambush, Plaza Singapura. Perhaps you might have seen the grafitti-styled logo, paired with a couple of tomatoes elsewhere, it is because they have offered diners a convenient and casual European fix at other major shopping malls - Junction8, Jurong Point, Ngee Ann City and Jurong's new Jem (Opening in April 2013) as well.What's on the food tasting menu? Negra paella (S$14.50) rises up as one of my Ambush favourites, the reason for my love towards this Valencian classic is simple - the rice was sticky enough, flavours were robust and I liked how the bright orange roes contributed an additional crunch to the overall texture. Just like any squid ink dishes, make sure you have checked your teeth before grinning!Roasted Pork Knuckle (S$28.00 for whole) impressed me with its perfect crispy skin, yet the juicy tenderness of the meat was sufficiently retained. You could have seen how good this was when it disappeared off the table after a few minutes. The sauerkraut and mashed potato that comes along with the pork knuckle was nothing to rave about, but I do strongly recommend to savour the pieces of meat by pairing it with the gravy sauce.Huge? Definitely. Juicy? Yup. Flavorful? Checked. Mussel Pot Large (S$17.60) is something not to be missed. We had them doned in Aglio Olio style - semi-sweet, which is so full on sauteed onions and garlicky flavour, and classic Vin Blanc - aromatic with white wine. Both, which proved to be too good to compare against each other.Decorated with home-made tomato and orange sauce, while the Duck confit (S$18.00) sits comfortabley on a bed of mashed potatoes. It actually looks better than it tasted. It was well-seasoned and marinated, but a tad dry for my liking.Crispy Chicken and Seaweed Pasta (S$13.00) was what I have chosen for my main course. The pasta itself was cooked slightly less than the al-dente standard, while the crispy chicken reminds me of KFC's popcorn chicken. Although this dish was an interesting fusion of Asian and Western, it was not exactly a winner for my palate.All in all, I thought that the starters/appetizers fared better than the main courses. But hey, guess what, "everyone gets a little taste of Europe", Ambush is a great option for a simple gathering over a wide variety of European dishes.…查看更多

This is the first time I've come to the new extension part of Plaza Singapura, so I was very glad to have a chance to visit Ambush here, thanks to their kind invitation for a food tasting session with openrice. The place was really easy to find, with the signs put up indicating where the extension part is. You can go straight to level 4, walk through the new extension and voila, ambush is right in front of you at the central part of the floor. There's plenty of seating with large tables available too - good for large gatherings with friends. We had the black mussels cooked in 2 different styles. The aglio olio style came with sauteed onion, garlic, chilli flakes and olive oil. The sauce was not dry like the usual aglio olio style and was quite spicy and a bit sweet as well, giving it a slightly Asian taste. It went pretty well with the mussels. As for the vin blanc style, the sauce is white wine based, with onions, garlic and pieces of smoked bacon. I personally prefer the vin blanc style as it's really aromatic with the white wine. The mussels were also quite huge and fresh. Thumbs up if you love mussels.- A close-up of a mussel cooked vin blanc style ($18.60 for a large pot)Roasted pork knuckle was also offered for sharing. The mashed potatoes was creamy and I like it that they gave more brown sauce at the side - you can top that up for your mashed potatoes too besides your pork knuckle hehe. The skin of the pork knuckle was crackling crispy and the meat itself really lean and well-marinated. Surprisingly, the sauerkraut was not too sour considering that it's pickled cabbage. It had hints of onion within too - not bad.- Roasted pork knuckle ($29.50 for a whole)- Close-up of pork knuckle slice with sauerkraut & mashed potatoI took some bites of the crispy chicken & seaweed pasta. The chicken itself was really crispy and still quite succulent inside. The aglio olio sphagetti here is spicy and also slightly sweet (similar to the previous mussels). An interesting Japanese twist to it with the generous amounts of seaweed added to it. - Crispy chicken & seaweed aglio olio style ($13)Tried coq au vin (chicken stewed in red wine) for the first time. The sauce is another winner, it's rich and fragrant with the generous amount of red wine used. The pickled pearl onions, carrot, potatoes and bacon (thickly sliced, I initially thought it was roasted pork belly) included in this meal makes it a filling meal too. The chicken leg was also stewed till tender. Nice! Hmm, if they replaced the french beans with fine asparagus, it'll be even better! - Coq Au Vin ($17.80)Had a little "black caviar" too - oops...it's just the negra paella. It's a valencian dish made with bomba rice (a type of short grain rice). The negra paella consisted of seafood stewed with the rice in squid ink. The rice was coated evenly with the squid ink and was quite tasty. A worthy dish to try - just be careful to check yourself in the mirror before you go grinning at everybody else with your blackened teeth haha.- A teeny portion of the negra paella ($14.50)Finally, the main dish I had all on my own - the confit duck leg. The presentation was good, giving it a pretty "atas" feel. The caramelized onions on the side were really soft but just a bit too sweet. The red sauce was made from tomato puree, but I couldn't really place the taste of the yellow sauce - might be a mild-tasting fruit based sauce. The duck leg is fried but not oily and rests on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes. The meat itself was not super tender but still ok and well-marinated. Not bad, although I had higher expectations for the dish.- Confit duck leg ($18.50)Finally, a nice drink to end off the hearty meal. The ice cafe mocha was pretty rich and just nice in sweetness. - Ice cafe mocha ($4.20)Ahhh, I was so full at the end of my meal but very satisfied! The dishes were presented very well and all tasted pretty good. Seems ambush has lived up to its promise to deliver gourmet dishes at affordable prices. It was a weekday Lunch as usual and we decided to try out Plaza Sing's new wing extension. Have been hearing from friends that there are quite a few selection of eateries there. Just before lunch, we spotted a Groupon deal that offers $30 deal for $15 at Ambush so this settles our lunch venue.The placed was tucked at a corner at level 4 and we thought it really suits the name; Ambushed at a little corner..luckily there's sign post indicating the various restuarants located deeper away from the level roundabout. We reach there at about 12.30 pm and there was not much lunch crowd and the place was quite spacious.We ordered the Ambush Paella and its pretty decent. It suits my palette as I prefer the rice to be more moist and the portion is generous. Ladies with relatively smaller appetie might find it a struggle to finish it.The next dish that arrive is the appetiser, Cheese puff and mushroom. The puff with cheese dip complements each other well as the dip is not over powering with the cheese after that. However, the fried mushroom is quite greasy despite its nice appearance. There is traces of oil left behinf on the trya and when I cut the mushroom, I can the oil coming out as well. The fried mushroom is too oily for my liking but t he cheesy puff is the saving grace for that appetiser.Another main that we ordered is the fried chicken Aglio Oglio spaghetti. The chicken pieces given are quite a fair bit but taste is average. The chicken is deep fried without being too dry but it lacks the extra punch to bring out the whole dish. Its like eating the fried chicken and spaghetti separately.Overall, its a dinning place with average food and affordable prices. Without the groupon deal, maybe it will be a while before I return. Seventh day of the lunar new year and according to the Chinese, this is the day where everyone celebrates their birthday.Nowadays, most Chinese celebrate this day with the seven colored vegetables lo hei.I had two of those lined up for me but first,let's do a celebration at Ambush's latest outlet!The Atrium @ Dhoby Ghaut is now opened with even more dining options at Plaza Singapura.Stepping off the escalator on the topmost floor finds you at Chef Wan's on the right and Hifumi on the left.Just keep walking straight.And ambush is right there, smack in the centre.But amusingly inconspicuous as a dining outlet because their central kitchen is tucked away in a corner away from the dining area.Now there's a dining place you wouldn't have to worry about leaving with the smell of oil. A Staub!Now that really impressed me.I don't know if they do this for normal service but with prices as affordable as Ambush,I did not expect much on presentation.And what about taste?Those delicious pieces of crackling.The pieces of pork knuckle had a considerably low fat to meat ratio.It's definitely a bang for your buck.But I digress.The satisfying crunch of the crisp crackling.The juice that oozes out from the meat with every cut of the knife.This was a good start.And did I forget the sides?Thick and creamy mash with additional gravy on the side.Sauerkraut and mustard was an addition of a new dimension on taste for those less of a carnivore.I was all ready for a weissbier!We also had sharing pots of mussels done two ways.This was the one done Aglio Olio style.Spicy and full on garlic flavour.A typically Asian palate would find this to be familiar.A scoop of the gravy and that full mussel creates a stellar burst of flavours in your mouth.Eat with caution.You'll be going for seconds and thirds in no time.We also had an earlier pot of mussels done the original Vin Blanc style.Perhaps it was cold by the time all of us paparazzi people were done.But the sauce had a very strong sour aftertaste that wasn't very pleasing on the taste buds.I'll be sure to try it hot the next time.An Earl Grey Vanilla to refresh my taste buds for my much anticipated order of a duck confit.Perhaps the starters stole the limelight.But this didn't shine for me.The duck confit was a good sized duck leg.Salted and seasoned with herbs, those were very evident in the taste of the meat.However, the poaching process seems to have been skipped as the meat was not meltingly tender.Fried, the duck leg had a crisp layer of skin but I had enough of all that skin from the previous starter of pork knuckles.The Negra Paella which was shared amongst us, was a whole different story.Served with a generous variety of seafood,this was perfect for sharing.Those grains were coated evenly with dark squid ink which aside from staining one's teeth, could be worryingly pungent if not handled properly.Which wasn't a valid concern at all.Every bite was a bite of yum!Seafood and squid ink coated rice.Ink black is the new black guys.And then, with a tummy too full,I was off for my seven colored vegetable tossing events.Happy birthday to me and everyone else! “At Ambush, Everyone Gets a Little Taste of Europe”Perfect for large group dining events with their dining arrangementsand moderately affordable prices,I'll be back at Ambush soon enough for my next large group gathering!AmbushPlaza Singapura 68 Orchard Road #04-64/66 (The Atrium)Singapore 238839This was an invited food tasting session but all opinions shared are author's own.Many thanks to OpenRice, Estelle and Ambush for their kind invite to fun-filled food tasting session.http://monstrousappetites.blogspot.sg…查看更多

Can't decide between Spanish food, French food or Italian pasta? Or perhaps some Swedish cheeseballs? Ambush is the place for you with its comprehensive dishes from the European regions. Or the local "European Union" might be a more apt description for that place For full review: www.dairycream.blogspot.sgFrom Belgium, this Pot of Mussels $15.60(S) /$18.60(L) in White Wine & Smoked Streaky Bacon impressed with generous dose of sweet alcohol tinged with garlicky flavour. For something spicy but not too much, the Thai Basil version appealed to me more with that familiar Asian flavour. Replace it with fish and the fragrant spiced herbs get close to the Thai style Assam Steamed Fish. From Germany, the classic Pork Knuckle ($18 for half) was roasted moderately well, producing a crackly golden rind covering the tender meat and fats. I like the juiciness which is not found in German restaurants like Brozeit or Paulaner Brahaus but traditionalists might beg to differ.Served in slices, this saves you the trouble of cutting the whole leg. But the pillowy mashed potato seemed to steal the limelight while the saukeraut was dry and too little for the meat.Craving for some French cusine? The duck confit with orange sauce$18.50 is a clean-looking dish with just some simple seasonings to bring out the flavours. In fact, the crispy deep fried duck attracted me more than my own main the coq au vin, braised chicken leg in red wine sauce-$17.80 . The chicken was sure fork tender with the robust red wine booze. But some pearl onions and thin bacon would power up this dish with the necessary sweetness and acidity.Eventually, what won me was this humble plate of aglio olio spaghetti with seaweed and fried chicken $13.00. Littered with hints of peppery dried chilli and sourness, the pasta was a welcome change after having too much meat. The golden crispy fried chicken was definitely different and more tasty than the seaweed fried chicken nuggets which we used to get from sch canteens.Negra Paella $14.50My love for black food includes not only chocolate but also squid ink dishes. In fact, this Spanish paella was my favourite dish of that day as the rice was sticky and full of flavour as compared to my previous try at Ochre. But perhaps the name "Negra" might call for a wiser name. In short, the European fare here is value for money as the hearty main courses do not exceed $20 while pastas at average $13. It can be comparable to other western food chains like TCC and Robert Timms, but what makes it different is its European focus with some Asian twist. Should I return, I will not leave without the highly raved wild salmon Thai basil pasta and of course, the desserts. Ambush a restaurant selling European cuisine. This restaurant is located on the 4th floor of the new wing of Plaza Singapura. It's tuck in a cozy corner. This is the first time I've been to this restaurant.The food menu is presented in a form newspaper format with four full pages of the food. The surrounding is pretty quiet and cozy. Was served Roasted Pork Knuckle. The skin very crispy and the meat is really tender it's just like eating the local version. Except this tastes richer. When you mixed with the sauce, the mashed potato, mustard and sour veg, to me it tastes heavenly. Yum yum... Another starters is the mussel pot a must try was served two version the Vin Blanc and Aglio Olio. I personally like the Vin Blanc (white wine) sauce, the sauce did not overpower the mussel itself. The mussels served were big and crunchy. I asked for Ice Caffe Mocha which incidentally was one of my favorite drink anywhere. The main meal I tried was Chicken Garlic Sausage with Pasta. The sausage oozed with cheese when it was cut. I like the sausage but the pasta was a letdown. The taste of tomato was too overpowering, I could only tasted tomato instead of the other ingredient. Ever since Plaza Singapura had its new extension, there are so many new restaurants opened, and I am opened to so much more choices now! AMBUSH pasta bar is one of the newly opened outlet, and I thought I could give it a try for one of my casual lunch with my boyfriend, since our school is so near. I was craving for something sour and thus appetizing, so I thought I would go for this. Although the tomato salsa on the toasted garlic bread made it soggy, the bruschetta in overall was appetizing because of its tangy tomato salsa! Sauteed sliced streaky bacon and picnic hamMy boyfriend ordered this because he was having a sore throat and I banned him from eating anything fried or whatsoever. He likes bacon and ham too so here he goes. To me, the cream sauce tasted a little diluted. It was not as creamy and thick like how usually pasta restaurants would. Give you a very relatable example - Pastamania! Pastamania's carbonara's cream sauce is really thick and I would usually feel sick after eating for long. But good thing about this dish is that since the cream sauce is not as thick, you don't really feel sick after eating for long. Pros and cons la huh. I've never really tried Paella before, and this was my first time. I decided to give it a try because I've always liked seafood and tomato sauce. Since this is a combination of both my likings, and I wanted something filling, I went for this! This dish has rice cooked in thick tomato sauce. It turned up to be a satisfying dish which was very filling. Overall, this is a great place to have a quick lunch without waiting for very long. The waitress are pretty polite and react very fast to orders. The food was served very quickly as well. Fast-paced service, thumbs up! I really enjoyed the food here, especially the Paella. Have tried their food at Bishan and was happy that their new branch is open at the new extension shopping area of Plaza Singapura. Ambush has always been one of my favorite European restaurant as the food they served is nice and best of all, it is not expensive at all.Decided to give it a try at their newly opened branch for our dinner. The restaurant is empty when we reached at around 5.45pm, and was bring to our cosy seat for 2. Ordered their signature Ambush Paella, Chicken Schnitzel and Sausage Plate (choice of 2 sausages and starch. Chosen Spicy Pork Sausage, Chicken Cheese Sausage & Rosti)Due to us ordering far too much food, the waiter took the initiative to join our table so we can eat our food without cramping the plates together. thumbs up for the service!Ambush Paella ($13.90)Service with generous serving of paella, together with 2 mussles, 2 fresh prawns, scallop and chunks of sausages. I love their paella as it is cooked with perfection and their seasoning is good and not too salty for my liking. Chicken Schnitzel The chicken is a bit dry but I like the crispiness of it. Not oily and seasoning is good too. The mushroom sauce which came with it is nice! will be good if they can serve the sauce separately.Sausage Plate ($12.90) Didnt really like how the rosti is cook. Not warm in the centre though it was crispy enough.
