Bimi Kaiho - Japanese Eatery: Review

Today I'm going to share a little about a Japanese eatery which has been tucked away from busy Singapore in International Plaza for many years. Some people might know the way, but its name - Bimi Kaiho - may not come to mind as the eatery's signage board is all in Japanese. The owner is also Japanese, it seems, as I hear him blabbering away in Japanese during my visits to this place.The place is really small though, but I do like the rustic Japan decor.It's big as it looks. The place is really small though, but I do like the rustic Japan decor.

 Lovin' this beer ad. So 1950s.

Packed with patrons during lunch hour, Bimi Kaiho served simple, traditional Japanese favourites with affordable pricing. It's menu is nothing fancy too, just binded with laminated paper. Whatever that's on the wall is on that menu, so really, there's not much need to refer to it.

 The eatery serves interesting dishes like Zosui (Kaki Oyster $11.50, Yasai Vegetable $8), Saraudon ($10), Hiyashichuka ($10), Nabeyaki Udon ($13) and more! Of course you'll have the normal sets, going from $13 and above.

I ordered the Udon set ($15.50), which comes with any 1 item of your choice (seafood tempura, tonkatsu pork, tori karaage, yakiniku or cream croquette). It also comes with chanwanmushi (steamed egg), which I simply love. I chose to have the tonkatsu pork, which turned out to be a pretty good choice!

 I loved how the tonkatsu was fried to perfection. While on the oily side, the meat was really tender and the outer layer was crispy and the entire combination was lovely. Eat it together with piping hot udon noodles? OOH-LA-LA.

My friend had the Katsudon (Pork Cutlet) for $13. It comes with soup, rice and a simple garden salad.

 One of my favourite bottles. They even bothered to decorate it!

Summary: You want affordable, Japanese food and friendly staff. Bimi Kaiho should be one of your top choices. What's more, the environment and decor is very Japanese. While eating, take a walk down the daydream valley and imagine that you're in Japan for a holiday! (It's not that hard, really.)

 Entrance of eatery - Bimi Kaiho

Directions:

When you've reached International Plaza (Tanjong Pagar), take the escalator next to 7-11 convenience store on the first floor. Once at the second floor, turn right and walk all the way straight. You'll find Bimi Kaiho right at the end of the walk.

It has been a while I last eaten here.Yasai Itame ($7.50)It is fried assorted vegetables and tastes light and crunchy.California reversed roll (6pcs) ($8.50)The tastes is quite light and soft.Dinner set ($22)For the 2 main courses that come with dinner set, we select Saba Shioyaki (grilled mackerel) which is quite tasty and Tonkatsu (breaded crispy pork cutlet) which tastes a bit tough and tasteless.The meal is quite filling for 2 of us.

The meal is quite filling for 2 of us.

Restaurant is small and setting is simple, it can accomodate at most 20-30 customers.  Usually i will request to change all the sushi to Salmon, with an additional of $1. Their sushi had been fantastic, the vinegar rice and fresh sushi was heavenly. However, the standard had dropped significantly since a year ago.

Their cha soba was firm, liked it with lots of wasabi. Their tempura and potato salad are nice as well.

We ordered a small bottle Sake and were first served with that, accompanied with a snack, salmon mayo in a porcelain dish. My boyfriend and I had 2 Set Dinner: appetizer, main dish with rice, miso soup, chawanmushi and fruits. We were curious to try more varieties so we made a pact to select different choices. Hence, we ultimately choose grilled beef and fried pork cutlet for the mains and 2 servings of sashimi. My verdict? Definitely more than just positive. Grilled beef was tender and juicy with its teriyaki sauce. Fried pork cutlet was crispy and the ratio of lean meat to flour was 4:1, which was fantastic for its generosity. I'm glad we took 2 servings of sashimi as the raw fish were fresh and authentic, something had already told us to do so. The Sake did go with the slices.

Chawanmushi was really soft, like quality tofu with strong egg essence. The pearly white grains of rice were moist and unlike most commercial Japanese chain restaurants these days, the rice tasted true country-side Japanese. Miso soup was ordinary and the orange fruit slices helped cleared our tongues at the end of our meal. Being greedy, we also decided to add on ice-cream to our night. We had a scoop of macha green tea and sakura(sweet plum) each, the green tea was definitely a wise choice but the sakura felt a little pungent, in our opinions.

Prompt service, but both the lady boss and waitress didn't seem friendly. I understand the hecticness during lunch hours but it was 8pm at night and the staff still maintained being impatient. Perhaps this is one area they could improve on.

Very good quality of Japanese delicacy. They're always hidden gems out there and Bimi Kaiho is one.

Are budget eating and good quality mutually exclusive? Bimi Kaiho proves that that’s a falsehood. It’s a very small Japanese restaurant which has made a loyal group of followers happy for many years. When I was there, the place was packed and there were a few tables of Japanese customers—always a good sign to me.I came with cha soba and unagi in mind so ordering was a no-brainer. No idea whether it’s a mind trick cuz I miss soba so much, but I find the cold cha soba here really good! Firm textur

When I was there, the place was packed and there were a few tables of Japanese customers—always a good sign to me.

I came with cha soba and unagi in mind so ordering was a no-brainer. No idea whether it’s a mind trick cuz I miss soba so much, but I find the cold cha soba here really good! Firm texture and wonderfully refreshing. A generous slab of grilled unagi with sweet tamago made up the other half of my simple yet almost-perfect (if only the eel was more tender…) meal ($17++ with rice, otherwise it’s $22++ with soba instead).

There’s many different types of bentos on the menu and the friend made a right choice with the saba/salmon teriyaki bento ($16++) cuz the grilled mackerel was deliciously moist!

With such affordable pricing, I certainly didn’t expect world-class Japanese cuisine and Bimi Kaiho didn’t pretend to serve that either. But for simple, homecooked food with prices that won’t hurt the wallet, Bimi Kaiho will do nicely.
