My daughter & jh bought dinner as return treat for my wife & i ‘lombang’ aka enjoyed collateral benefits. They suggested chikuwatei, and now thinking back the last time i went there was 3yrs+ ago. These few days I had been thinking of going to chikuwatei again so the time was most fitting. Not sure if there was any change of ownership but the service was very much better. The lady taking charge at the front counter, showing us to the table, gave good recommendations and was not pushy. The oysters she recommended were excellent. When she was clearing the dishes at the end of the meal she tipped over my wife’s sake cup. Later she came back with a full cup of sake. I guess we could have reasonably asked for that too but we did not, & did not really expect it.We ordered 4 chirashi don for 4pax, 2 servings of oysters (4 oysters), teriyaki chicken & a 250ml house sake (S$16). I was much looking forward for the chirashi don as I had not taken here for so long. In fact i was slightly disappointed. The helpings were just as large – 5 slices of salmon, 3 maguro, 3 kajiki, 2 hamachi & 2 tamago (egg), with a heap of ikura. The rice was good, ok not the best. The salmon was not so sweet (2 of the 5 were sweeter). I thought what the salmon sashimi i had at sun with moon wheelock as a S$3 side dish for 3 pieces were better! The kajiki & maguro were also not very sweet, the hamachi was a bit sweeter. the ikura added a slightly salty, flavourful touch to the vinegared rice.I guessed overall it was not too bad but a bit underwhelming for me & kind of below what i expected. If I were having just sashimi, the S$20 chirashi don lunch set I had recently at ginza kuroson was a lot better quality, but that was lunch. If I wanted combination then the sets at sun with moon would be more attractive than this. Must add though that the oysters were quite large & excellent, juicy, tasty with no metallic taste, very enjoyable. the teriyaki chicken was good too, though not really food I would order. Probably won’t come here too soon unless there are some other specials or promotions.See my full reviews & photos at = http://chefquak.com/2014/06/17/oysters-chirashi-don-chikuwatei-on-17jun2014/查看更多

It’s a nice quiet place for lunch without the usual lunch crowd. Have heard rave reviews about the mushroom chawanmushi and also the Chirashi set. First impression of the chawanmushi is its definitely more quality food than the usual ones you eat with just plain egg and maybe one tiny piece of chicken or prawn meat. You will be delighted with plenty of mushroom which goes well with the steamed egg, retaining the flavor of the fungi. The chirashi also impressed with its thick sashimi slices, with 4 different types offered (salmon, tuna, yellow tail and I think mackerel) and also topped up with salmon fish roe. It’s probably the thickest slice of sashimi I’ve ever eaten. Very fresh I would say but being not a huge raw food fan, I should have stuck to a cooked food item and ordered this as a side instead. 查看更多

This is one of my most favourite Japanese steam egg as you can see, the generous amount of mushroom topped on it are really tasty and very healthy for everyone too. The steamed egg is very smooth and really fragrant, which is also not too salty and with the right amount of seasoning in it. The portion is quite generous and the price is quite reasonable. Usually I will order this dish to go along with their fragrant japanese rice and teriyaki chicken. 查看更多

This Japanese restaurant do served many delicious japanese dishes which really cater for people like me who is crazy over Japanese foods. One of my favourite here is their cold noodles. The brown noodles are very smooth and chewy, which you dip your noodles in the cold soup certainly taste refreshing and at the same time very sweet and yummy! Adding some chopped spring onions to the noodles will also enhance the flavour of it and make it tastes even more delicious! 查看更多

I had said before and I say it again, this place serves one of the best Chirashi sushi in Singapore! I actually took a cab all the way from the east just to satisfy my craving here at Chikuwa. So this season, Uncle Peter (the chef) decides that salmon, sword fish and mackerel are his catch. As you can see from the photograph, uncle peter is very generous with his sashimi slices and ikura! Extremely delicious! Unforgettable experience, you really got to try it yourself. Large slab of Unagi was the order of my dining partner!查看更多

This is where i go for my chirashi fix. Anyone who remembers the grouchy uncle who mends the fort at Wasabi Tei - Far East Square would know this place. The very grumpy uncle has decided a few years back to sell his business at Far East and open one here at Mohd Sultan. He certainly less grouchy now that he has a much large place, less crowd and more helpers. Actually with the dwindling diners, I sure hope the restaurant will survive for a long long time.I love this place because they are generous. Generous with their sashimi portion. Thick salmon sashimi slices greet you instead of tiny miserable ones at other places. This is my all time favourite. The chirashi set. You dont get the same ingredients everytime, depends on the season and what the chef gets hold of. This is my friend's set. Cant remember what she had查看更多

Hi, the famous Exec Chef had long left Chikuwa Tei Japanese Restaurant since end Feb 2012 and his first restaurant was at "Far East Plaza" and not Far East Square, and this 2 locations are totally different and far apart. Well, regulars who used to have their meals at his very first restaurant (Far East Plaza) would know and said it correct. Anyway, like I've mentioned earlier, he has long left his second restaurant at Md Sultan in Feb this year. I sincerely hope that you can enjoy great and quality food! :)

For more reviews, visit my blog at www.ms-skinnyfat.comOne of my favorite Japanese restaurant has got to be Chikuwa Tei. There are 18 bento sets to choose from, from S$12 to $25, the most expensive being the Chirashi set. I've tried a couple of their bentos and the quality is pretty consistent. If you like Sashimi, you would love this. Just look at the generous chunks of fresh fish piled on top of the vinegar rice! Each piece is about 10cm long and at least 1cm thick and you can taste the fresh sweetness of the fish. S orders this everytime we go there.Depending on my mood, i would go for Ten Cha Soba set ($12) when i want something lighter. Or their Chikuwa Tei set when i'm really greedy. They have 2 sets, 1 for individual and another for 2pax. It is more pricy (about S$40-50/pax) but there is a variety of dishes, from grilled to tempura and sukiyaki even.Anyway, i love the refreshing cha soba which has a tinge of matcha taste in it (not all cha soba tastes of green tea). The texture of the green noodles is also very spingy and the dipping sauce is of the right amount of saltiness. My comfort food. I would go for cold udon but they advised me against it (it isn't on the menu). Just be good and listen to the aunties. 查看更多

this place is really a good and charming place. What I like about this place is not only its cozy setting, warm service but the thickness of its Sashimi. They are generously thick, especially their swordfish, fresh and crunchy. One of the recommended set is Chirashi Sushi Set if you are into raw fish. Like this starter a lot, the baked potato is nice. It has a nice place and good ambience for night out. 查看更多

Their signature chawanmushi is twice as expensive as other japanese restaurants at $5, but rightly so because you pay for what you get, and what you get here is a very smooth and tasty steamed egg custard with very generous and better ingredients like prawns, mushrooms and chicken hidden underneath the steamed egg. These ingredients are all fresh and good, the chicken stays tender but the steamed egg is still the highlight with its smoothness and silkyness. You really have to try it to know how good it is. The sashimi is also very fresh and sweet tasting and has consistently been so as well. For me, there is no need for wasabi, just the goodness of the sashimi in its pureness will do. Recommended!查看更多

My colleague recommended this place to meI ordered the chirashi sushi & udon setthey’re very generous with their slices of fish & everything in the bowl was good. The rice was also well cooked & nicely vinegaredchawanmushi -Loads of enoki & mushrooms, chunks of chicken, cubes of incredibly fresh prawns& even some konnyaku at the bottom. The dashi stock is also very delicately balanced & the egg perfectly smooth.Overall i rate 8/10查看更多

I proudly present my most beloved and missed Chawanmushi !!! I missed it so much that I couldn't wait to have it and scorched my tongue ;pChilled salmon shashimi ;)Chilled shashimi moriwase for two~ now I crave to have this all by myself ;pCalifornia maki which is firm and packed with ingredients :)Stir-fried beef set :) The potion of beef is very generous and it is tender and full of flavors ~Grilled eel set - best eel ever! (erm, though the size shrinks, it is still yummy)Grilled cod fish, which is close to replacing my love for grilled eel ... Soft, almost boneless and melt in mouth make it an excellent choice ...The price for cod fish hotpot has increased but still within affordable range ... i think not more than $8 compared to the old price ... Given the current location and sky high rent, the increase of prices are unavoidable ...I'll definitely be back for more and more and more ;p查看更多

I've heard a lot about Chikuwa Tei, a new venture by the infamous Nazi chef of the now-defunct Wasabi Tei at Far East Plaza. It's a pity that I've not had the opportunity to dine at Chef Peter's former restaurant, but I certainly don't mind paying a bit more for a spacious dining area and friendly service.A crunchy braised renkon otoshi entertained our tastebuds as our orders were prepared.Every spoonful of the smooth chawanmushi ($5++) was chockful of ingredients, ranging from pieces to chicken to strands of chewy Korean noodles and shimeji mushrooms. The restaurant's signature chirashi featured fresh cuts of hirame, kajiki, kanpachi, salmon and tuna, as well as a dollop of buttery uni and a piece of tamagoyaki on a bed of well-seasoned sushi rice. Along with the above-mentioned starter, the chirashi set ($25++) also includes a bowl of fruits, miso soup and pickles. Particularly worthy of mention was the oily salmon sashimi, as well as the generous slices of fish which were certainly the thickest I've ever had!The relatively quiet weekday lunch crowd and decent food- in terms of both price and taste- made for an ideal location for catching up with friends (over many refills of green tea). I'll love to try Chikuwa Tei's famed cod fish hotpot sometime!查看更多

Chikuwa Tei used to be Wasabi Tei at Far East Plaza. Though I’ve never been to the old premises, I’ve heard of the “good” old days when the restaurant was helmed by the infamous ”nazi chef”. With a much bigger restaurant to control now, the chef is no longer as grumpy as before, phew. Otherwise, how can grumpy people cook good food?Service was very brisk and efficient. Seats were shown, orders were taken, and a small bowl of crunchy renkon (lotus roots) was given as appetiser within minutes.Call it a moment of insanity. Till now, I’ve still had no idea why we had the Jumbo Roll ($5++). I dislike anything with those awful frozen crabsticks so this was no better. On the other end of the spectrum, these sheets of mini dried sardines ($8++) were super delicious! So crispy and addictive~ Portion was small so it’s best to get one for yourself! =)Another star dish of the night was these fried salmon wrapped with seaweed ($12++)! Love the texture of this. What made it even more tasty was this homemade Japanese curry! It’s on the sweet side so it’s perfect as a dip for those savoury salmon rolls. The cod fish in claypot ($24++) had a nice sweet broth, plenty of tender oily fish and assorted vegetables, but it’s definitely not as memorable as the salmon rolls and sardine sheets.查看更多

I was very pleased with the chirashi bowl tha was packed with fresh, generously thick slices of sashimi. What you get it nothing fancy or exotic – 8 different toppings in all, of which I thought the salmon and scallop were particularly outstanding. It doesn’t have the fat roe or delicious castella tamago that Aoki had, but I thought the thick slices of sashimi were actually better than the cubes had at Aoki. The layer of sushi rice below all that sashimi was also particularly well seasoned and highly addictive. I found myself polishing everything off!The chirashi set ($25) comes with a starter, miso soup, fruits and some pickles. After all the surcharges it works out to be about $30, which while apparently quite a bit higher than what Wasabi Tei used to charge, I found reasonable considering the quality and quantity you’re getting. I’ll happily do revisits just for this bowl!Chikuwa Tei is a comparatively large compound, with lovely interior decorations and a number of service staff. You can choose to sit at the counter and watch Chef Peter, or sit in larger groups at the tables. The vibe is that of a proper Japanese restaurant, unlike the dingy place at Far East Plaza (where Wasabi Tei still stands, but run by different people). The prices have been raised accordingly, but I don’t believe it’s anything unfair for what you’re getting. Go in there with a fresh slate, and enjoy the good Japanese food doled out.查看更多
