We had our first taste of the famous Mdm Kwan Nasi Lemak on a weekday. We went around 2pm and it wasn't noisy nor crowded at this hour. The restaurant is quite spacious and tables are nicely spaced out. There is no need to worry about anyone invading your pte space Decor is also quite nice and feels good seated there. So yeah, we wowed when the nasi lemak was served. Rice smelled so yummy and the chicken curry was thick and good! Don't expect healthy food when you come to mdm kwan. YOu have to prepare to eat sinfully yummy food!! Else pls don't go. The curry chicken is da bomb! And that heap of sambal ikan bilis.. so so good with the rice. it is not too spicy. Not seen on the pic is a side of achar. Crunchy and spicy!

Overall we really like this nasi lemak but it is not for everyday eating.

Oh, the person who took our order ( manager I suppose) was very friendly and polite

My colleagues brought me there last week.
Most well-known signature dishes are Nasi Bojari and Nasi Lemak.
But also like to recommend the Otak-Otak ($15.90), the grilled fish paste.
No fishy smell and spicy, just simply fresh and delicious.
Thumbs up for the Char Kway Teow ($14.90) too.
Not too oily, flat rice noddles with all essential fresh integrants egg, chicken, squid, prawns, bean sprouts, etc.
When I taste the Nasi Bojari ($18.90) that my friend ordered, the coconut rice is well fragrant and in tri-color as they said.
But not too significant taste from others as their most popular dish, probably i may expect more.

Then, next is the dessert. The sweet bites of Banana Fritter with Ice Cream ($8.90) is touchable.
Loved to eat the fried banna that covered by thin crispy layer. That's really match with vanilla ice-cream.
Overall, quite satisfied with Madam Kwan's food.
I may come back again to try the curry chicken, malay satay and more others authentic food.

Another notable addition to the local dining scene would be the opening of popular Malaysian eatery, Madam Kwan's, at Vivocity earlier this month. Touting authentic Malaysian cuisine at its best, I was very eager and lucky to be one of the first in to try it over lunch.

The premises of the restaurant is huge. With both indoor and al fresco dining, Madam Kwan's can seat up to 200 pax comfortably. But to get a table during lunch/dinner hours, I wouldn't leave it too late. It took just 30 minutes after 12 to pack the restaurant up to the rafters.

Looking at the menu, one familiar with the local dining scene might naturally draw references to the Grandma's restaurant chain already operating in Singapore. Both eateries are building on the cornerstone of authentic flavours and recipes handed down through the generations by the matriarchs of the family. First impressions wise, Madam Kwan's certainly won hands down - diners at the restaurant could see the lady herself doing meet and greets, photo taking, general seat assignments. I got to talk to a food icon! *Achievement Unlocked*

My lunch at Madam Kwan's consisted of a starter, a main course and dessert:

Otak-Otak - $15.90
6 cubes of the spicy fish paste grilled and served in banana leaf. A familiar dish here n Singapore, the Otak-Otak at Madam Kwan's certainly set itself apart in terms of quality. The Otak was thicker than what you would get anywhere else, and the flavour was just spot-on, without too much spice ruining the taste with excessive heat.
Recommended - A great starter dish not to be missed.

Fried Beef Kway Teow - $14.90
Okay, the name of the dish befuddles me. No matter how I look, that just looks like hor fun to me, nothing fried to it. Naming conventions aside, the beef kway teow just lacked that wow factor for me. I have tasted better and at much more economical prices. Compliments could be paid to the individual strips of kway teow though. They were tender and separate unlike others which I've tried that had the kway teow slightly on the rubbery side and clumped together.

Banana Fritter with Ice Cream - $8.90
This is probably THE dessert to end of your meal at Madam Kwan's. Hot meets cold in some yin and yang style of cooking. The deep fried banana had a crisp outer layer slick with caramelization, covering a mushy banana centre. 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream served on the side just help to add to the contrast in flavours, and also take an edge of the intensity of the banana fritter.

Verdict: A trip to Madam Kwan's is definitely a must to test the hype out for yourself. But coming down to the taste factor, there are a few hits I must say, but whether or not it is enough to warrant the higher than average price points is really up to the individual.

Decided to try out the flag ship stall of Madam Kwan's after hearing rave reviews about this place which originates from KL. The restaurant is pretty big, able to house at least 200 diners at one go. At the entrance you get to see posters about Mdm Kwan's news and its history. The interior deco is done up in modern contemporary and clean lines design. The long drinks and dessert bar and cashier separates the entrance to the kitchen. Tables are oriented in different fashion and not just plain and uniformed straight lines. Cutlery used were bigger than the usual ones at home and thumbs up for that, makes it easier to eat. Lighting wise, each seat has its focused light at the centre of table, the soft lighting does make the restaurant cosy despite its hard wooden/plastic chairs.

Anyway Madam Kwan was on site, mainly helping to usher guest to their tables. She was dressed in her signature look of khaki round hat, specs and sporting a mole on the left. She was very soft spoken when i say hi to her and merely thank me for coming by. Wanted to talk to her more but i could tell she is busy with the incoming guests so i left her to work.

Back to the food, me and my friends ordered Nasi Bojari ($18.90, Madam's tri-colured rice with assam prawns, beef rendang and deep fried chicken drumstick, the beef rendang is very good 4/5) Otak Otak ($15.90 - spicy fish paste grilled in banana leaf, very nice feels quality fish mix inside 5/5), Banana Fritters with Ice Cream ($8.90 - a hot and cold combination, with the fried pisang crispy on the crust yet with the soft banana inside 4/5) and Bubur Chacha ($5.90 - plenty of sweet potato, yam, tapioca and sago cokked in thick coconut milk 4/5). By the way ice water is charged at $1 per glass. The condiments provided are a trio of spicy stuff, sambal chilli 4/5, chilli sauce 3/5 and chilli padi (no rating required , standard item mah)

Overall a fantantic eat, also see other interesting dishes ordered at adjacent table for e.g. malaysian satay 40grams each, black KL Hokkien Mee, and the curry chicken of course.

With fluffy and well-separated grains, the light yet aromatic coconut rice was one of the best I've had- better than Grandma's and the now-defunct Wok & Barrel's! Its accompaniments were less spectacular, however. Not that there was anything wrong with the sambal ikan billis or crunchy, piquant achar- it's just that they weren't particularly memorable.

I'm being picky here, but the the curry chicken- though succulent- wasn't quite fall off the bone tender. And one probably expects a more generous portion of chicken with a $13.90+ plate of nasi lemak, no?

While I have not visited Madam Kwan's in KL, I felt that their nasi lemak was somewhat overrated. To think that I actually contemplated making a trip to the capital to satisfy my coconut rice cravings! Nevertheless, given the quality of the food and its relatively inexpensive pricing (considering the restaurant's prime location), I will return to Madam Kwan's if I happen to be at Vivocity- once the crowds die down, that is.

I settled for a steaming hot cup of teh tarik ($3.50+) as the chendol was sold out. Let me know if you try their signature dessert and nasi bojari- I certainly had a hard time deciding between nasi lemak and the latter!
