Rive Gauche particularly means "left bank of Seine in Paris", an area known as the paragon of French culture, fine arts and literature. The essence of Seine is translated into the bakery's authentic chocolate cakes, glamorous and classy fresh cakes and traditional baked pastry.

It was my brother's birthday and we got a cake from Rive Gauche. He had requested for something other than fruit cakes, hence, on the recommendation of the staff there, we got the Mont Blanc which costs $36. I think it is slightly less than 500g but since there are only five of us, the serving is just right. The cake is made of vanilla sponge cake with two different layers of chestnut filling and whipped cream. The top layer is the chestnut cream. It is a very special cake and the first cake that I have come across that uses chestnut. It is surprisingly good. The chestnut cream and whipped cream are very smooth and light tasting. It is not heavy at all and it is easy to polish of one slice of the cake. The balance of cream and cake is also appropriate. I could also taste chunks of chestnut within the cream which is quite a nice surprise since I enjoy eating chestnuts. Although the cake is slightly expensive, the taste makes up for it.

Passing by the elegant Rive Gauche kiosk at Jcube, I decided on a whim to buy some of the pretty cakes that were on display and dragged my friend along. We were greeted by a young salesgirl who was quite polite, although there was an older staff who kept trying to whisper and distract her even though the younger staff was clearly trying to attend to us. We weren't too impressed with the older staff but we appreciated the attentiveness of the younger staff. After some deliberation, I ended up buying a few items for myself. Madeleine ($3.50 for 5pcs) There were 4 raspberry flavoured Madeleine and only 1 Chocolate Madeleine which was a tad disappointing for me at first as I generally prefer chocolate. But it turned out that the chocolate wasn't very rich and the raspberry flavour actually tasted much better. These little sponge cakes were also quite buttery and spongy. Mont Blanc ($6.50)Look-wise, it wasn't really the round, dome shaped Mont Blanc that I was expecting, but this was quite decent in taste overall. The vanilla sponge cake was very soft and light and I liked that the chestnut filling was not too sweet although I found the chestnut cream to be a tad "oily". Neverthless, I enjoyed the cake, although I liked the other one I bought a lot more! Crunchy Cheese Crumbs ($5.80)This light cheesecake with cookie crumbs came looking really cute in a little round bowl and was simply amazing to taste! The cheesecake was smooth with a light cheesy taste which I thought balanced quite well with the crumbly biscuit crumbs which had bits of chocolate in it and was sweet. The cookie that came with it was a tad soft but the white chocolate piece was quite crunchy. Overall, this was just sooooo delicious and I couldn't get enough of it!Overall, I think the cakes at Rive Gauche are quite good and I'd recommend giving the Crunchy Cheese Crumbs a try! It's so good that I'm considering getting the larger version of this cake for a birthday! The prices were also quite reasonable especially considering the quality of the cakes here. They also sell other pastries and confections, like the Eclairs, Brownies, Meringue and Cookies, which I'd definitely check out on my future trips to Rive Gauche!

Mont Blanc $6.50I finally got to try mont blanc but sadly I do not really fancy the taste probably because I do not like (neither do I dislike) chestnuts. But still, it is worth a try if you have not tried it before. Napoleon $6I really love this puff pastry with light sponge cake sandwiched with cream. However, it might be a little hard to eat as the pastry on top cannot "break" easily. I will still get this again because it is really yummy! Must try!

Strawberry Shortcake $6this cake was not sweet too. The strawberries were fresh and the taste was quite similar to Bakerzin's version. macha swiss $4.20This has got to be one of my best matcha red bean combi buy ever!! The green tea has a slight hint of bitterness and a jap taste to it. The flavour was also quite strong and the cream was so delicately smooth. The matcha fillings were good enough. Everything did not taste sweet together. So yummy!guanaja $6.80the taste of the chocolate was very strong and rich. There was a crisp texture to it too. It was not sweet too! Overall, this is certainly worth a try!

I was attracted by the sprinkled gold powder on this Guanaja cake. The bitter sweet chocolate cake come with layer of chocolate mousse, sponge cake and crunchy biscuit. The chocolate mousse is more to the gelatinous type rather than those airy type of mousse and this give a dense to the chocolate cake. The bottom of the cake consist of hazelnut crunchy biscuit and it give a good texture. The price is quite reasonable for this pretty decorated and delicious cake.
