Cathay Cineleisure Orchard has never been my favourite place in town but if there's one place I'll go back to: This is it. I've always been an ardent fan of their tom yum fried rice -unfortunately, I learnt just yesterday evening that they removed it from their menu. In a lacklustre attempt to satisfy the tom yum fried rice craving, I ordered rice with Seafood Tom Yum Soup ($5.50). My dining companion ordered a Pineapple fried rice set ($7) that came with a small bowl of tom yum soup and a dish of papaya/mango salad.
The Tom Yum was sour and spicy, but there was a slightly sweet aftertaste which was a bit strange after awhile. There were bits of squid, crabsticks and prawns in the soup. (Not my ideal idea of seafood but still decent) A dash of mushrooms thrown in, with coriander and spring onion generously sprinkled over -we have our tom yum soup. After tucking into several mouthfuls, I knew deep down that nothing can replace the tom yum fried rice I had eaten...now reduced to a fond memory.*I would very much rather the stall owners used fish instead of crabsticks -not a fan of crabsticks at all.
The pineapple rice had 'wok hei', and the taste of pineapple was evenly spread out. Pork floss was sprinkled and it complemented the rice very well. However, my only gripe was that the rice wasn't tasty enough for me. A bit more salt would have done the trick. Other than that, it was satisfactory -not too oily, well-fried and most importantly, steaming hot!The sour papaya salad had peanuts and chilli in it, with a special homemade sauce. Tangy and refreshing -definitely an alternative to conventional salads, but a bit too sour to be eaten on its own. As a side however, it's perfect. I appreciated the peanuts -really uplifted the dish.
Overall, this place is not too bad. The value isn't that great after all but I suppose it's worth a try if you have a craving for Thai food and you're in the area.
