The story of Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee begins in the 1960s, with a young Mr. Tan Tiong Hoe, then an eager padawan himself, passionate about the coffee bean, and seeking to perfect the ultimate cup of gourmet coffee. From humble beginnings roasting his own coffee beans, he gradually moved on to packaging and supplying his coffee beans to coffee shops and cafes across Singapore. Today, with over half a century of experience, Mr. Tan Tiong Hoe is able to evaluate a cup of coffee, and even coffee beans, just by looking at it!

Ambience at Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee is like a shrine, or museum, to coffee. Sacks of coffee beans from all over the world line the cluttered shelves in the small place, alongside coffee percolators, from ancient models to sparkling new models. Quotes about coffee are scrawled on the walls, while warm lighting illuminates the small wooden furniture in the cramped seating area. The place smells distinctly of roasted coffee beans, and just next door, you can even watch them process it! And they also provide free wifi!

Service at Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee is largely self-service, with ordering and payment done over the counter, though staff will serve orders to your table. What truely stands out is the staff's product knowledge on coffee, these are eager students and passionate coffee disciples of Mr. Tan Tiong Hoe, able to not only describe flavours of the coffee to you, but able to create and roast their own blends of coffee! The guru himself, Mr. Tan Tiong Hoe is a walking encyclopedia of coffee knowledge, only dispensing his wisdom to the worthy who pass his test.

Food at Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee is practically non-existent, with only a small selection of cakes and desserts. They barely even have any drinks beyond water, tea, and of course, coffee. You visit Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee only for the coffee, but my gosh, what excellent coffee it is. Coffee blends from all over the world are available, each with its own unique story, history, roasting process, and flavour. Portions are sized for individuals, and prices are more affordable / cheaper than other places, plus, the coffee is of a much higher quality here, as each step of the brewing process is accurately controlled.

It's still not a fully deco cafe I must say, but you will definitely feeling cozy being in this tiny little place. It looks real and sincere. By just walking around, you will gain so much insight about the coffee processing.

Tiong Hoe Speciality Coffee carries coffee beans from different regions of the world. Different beans are well kept in the respective drawers and labeled with descriptions. Coffee lovers who are interested to know more about their cup of pleasure can have a good read. What's more, Barista Juliana is so friendly and generous to share with you her experience and love about coffee.

After the brief sharing about the coffee origins from different continents, Juliana went on to demonstrate the beans roasting process. What attracts me the most is this antique looking coffee roaster, which apparently working perfectly fine. The irresistible aroma of the roasted beans filled the whole cafe, very pleasant smell.

The highlight of the coffee appreciation session is to learn the arts and science of making coffee. Juliana is very enthused with her sharing of useful tips and simple technique of brewing the perfect cup. Don't worry if you have very little knowledge about coffee, ask her anything and she is more than willing to answer with big smiley. That really makes one feel extra relax in enjoying the cuppa.

It's a very informative session on coffee, from weighing the beans, grinding, to the skills of brewing coffee (the water temperature, the way of pouring water if using the V60 pour over system), smelling the aroma, and finally the tasting and identifying the variety hint of flavours (nutty, floral, spices etc).

Apart from the specialty coffee, Juliana is also good in brewing the expresso-based coffee. However, there is no sign board for price if you realized! You just tips after enjoying the coffee, whatever price you reckon it worths. Sounds cool hey!

I personally love the piccolo latte for the aroma, the silky froth and the full bodied flavour. And of course, not to forget the pretty latte art too!

Tiong Hoe Coffee has been around since the 1960s, and is a specialty coffee retail store providing freshly roasted coffee and green coffee beans for wholesale and home roasters alike. It has begun its very new cafe concept, done up completely with rustic furnishing edging towards the vintage Oriental side - think, white marble tabletops like those you were most likely to find in coffeeshops of the past.

For now, they serve aromatic and traditional freshly-brew coffee that comes with no price tags - you simply tip them for the delicious brew! They don't serve food currently but rest assured that plans to do so are definitely underway. The interior of Tiong Hoe Speciality Coffee Store / Cafe is a gorgeous treasure troves - of traditional coffee roasters and other ornaments (some of them are actually in good working order!)
Also, besides retailing of a wide variety of quality coffee beans, they also have various drip coffee makers and supplies for sale. This one-stop coffee supplies store makes it possible for home roasters to enjoy good coffee in the comfort of their homes.

We started with a hot cup of brewed Congo coffee beans. The taste was strong, with fruity notes (especially domineering was that of plums' sour and slightly savoury-sweet hints), and leaving a rather acidic aftertaste.

The next cup was of Ethiopia beans - with floral and nutty notes in its lighter, less acidic flavor. One could see that the coloring was lighter as well.

Next up, we tried the Indian monsooned beans - a very "coffee" flavored coffee, with slight hints of spicy / smokiness, and a rather meaningful story behind its name.
In my excitement to taste the Nicaragua beans (the same ones that Juliana used to demonstrate roasting), I did not manage to take photos. Anyway, the color and flavor were noticeably lighter, with distinctive floral notes in them.

Last but not least, after all the exotic dark coffee, we were treated to a cup of creamy, rich Piccolo Latte that still managed to convey quality beans in the milky concoction and pretty latte art.
