I actually had this during the recent PasarBella & Friends Go To Town event which was held at MBS. Managed to plan a second visit before it ended on Sunday. Decided to get a grilled squid $10 as well since it's long queue everywhere. This turns out to be a good choice. We ate slowly cause there were other food but it still taste good and tender despite being a bit cold towards the end.

Tomo in Japanese means "friends".This japanese restaurant named Tomo Izakaya located at Esplanade is a nice place for dining. The decoration of the restaurant are mostly in woods and placed origami handicraft on the wall. They also have sake bottles to be used as decorations as well. The nearest MRT is Esplanade MRT station. You can reach there by City Hall MRT station. It will be a walking distance around 15minutes. Below are the selection of foods that we ordered:-

Zaru Soba @ S$9
I like the cold noodle which taste refreshing. The texture of the noodle is very Q and the sauce that goes with the spring onion, wasabi and sesame is splendid.
A snap of photo after we combine all the ingredients into the sauce taken below for reference.

This is something new to me.Ton-Shabu Salad S$12.50
Thinly sliced boiled pork with onion and mixed salad in sesame dressing. Simply splendid! The thickness of the boiled pork is not more than 5mm and combination with the salad gives the refreshing taste.

Dashimaki Tamago S$7.00
The tamago is something different from the taste one we had normally.
The texture is smooth and not so sweet as well.

Ninniku Jyako Fried Rice S$10.50
We don't enjoy it. The fried rice is dried and we need to drink ocha to digest the fried rice.

Overall the foods here are delicious except for the fried rice.It is quite disappointing though.
However, the staff services are great. They are attentive and prompt to our order. They provide suggestion for our dinning choice as well. Definitely a nice place to dine in with friends.

I knew it will sell Salmon sashimi in some form, so when i took the menu I was hunting for the thing that will satisfy me. Mt first order was 2 pieces of salmon sushi (I thought I shall leave some space in my tummy in case my friends wanted to go for supper after that). However when i continued flipping through the pages of the menu, I saw this!
I could hear, I could feel, I could sense that it was staring at me, calling out to me. 'Eat me Eat me!' No choice, I had to cancel my first order and of course, I couldnt disappoint my sixth sense - This is THE ONE!

It was a beautiful sight when the chef presented the bowl of salmon chirashi. Looks almost surreal. I quickly devour what was in my bowl. The pieces of salmon were thick, satisfyingly thick to satisfy even the toughest critic. Each piece was fat, each piece was oozing out with omega 3. Every bite tellls me that I am getting healthier and healthier. Okay I am slightly deluded. I cant actually describe in words how wonderful this bowl is.

The ikura that accompanies this bowl was also marvellous. The chef was very generous in the amount of ikura. Then again I paid $20 of this bowl.

Anyway my only regret is that I ate way way too fast. If only I had slowed down and savour each and every bite. This is what happens when you are too hungry, and the food looks too pleasing.

I will definitely be back, I should bring my mum too, she would appreciate this wonderful bowl as much as I did.

Despite the lukewarm welcome by the waitress who said the warm air in the restaurant is "like that one", we settled to do the same with Tomo Izakaya, forgoing our reservation at 7atenine, which was deserted except for one table. Sorry guys.

Of the things we ordered, we were most satisfied with the skewers or kushiyaki. The beef skewer with a minced radish topping was surprisingly good. The beef, meaty but easy on the palate, not being overly chewy. And very tasty just with a simple salt and pepper seasoning, which highlighted the meat even better.

The mushrooms wrapped in thinly sliced belly pork and topped with Mentaiko before setting on the grill was also very tasty, made easily so just from the use of the melting pork fat bonding with the seasoned cod roe.

On a more healthy note, the sesame tofu was also very good. Unlike usual soft tofus, this had a slightly chewy texture aside from being just soft. This helps you savor the fragrance of the sesame as you break it down slowly with your tongue. No need for any biting at all. The toppings of flying fish roe and scallions add another dimension and freshness to the experience.

Our other orders included the Tomo Caesar salad which in true Japanese style, was lighter than the classic version, but had the yummy bacon bits to lend the addictive flavor against a creamy dressing. However, the Korean seafood pancakes were a complete letdown and was easily the worst dish of the night. Full of doughy flour and no hint of seafood, this was just pure starch and very bland at that.

Dessert was the Tomo Tiramisu, a green tea based mousse atop a bed of Japanese mashed red bean and sponge. When served chilled, it was like eating ice cream, but after a while, was like eating yucky greasy butter cream with little green tea taste.

If you're in the neighborhood, you could give this place a chance but stick to the tried and tested favorites. But after some Sake, you may not notice the difference. Plus point: this place does serve Calpis Soda, a favorite yogurt based soda from Japan which I really dig.
