My friends and I had a small post-xmas/pre-new year dinner and someone suggested Suki-ya for the eat-all-you-can hotpot. At the "Healthy Bar" near the center of the restaurant, I was glad to see quite an array of ingredients. At one side, there were fresh vegetables and meatballs such as enoki mushroom, tofu, carrot slices, cabbage, potato, mushroom balls, chicken cheese balls and so on. At the other side of the bar, there were the noodles section on one corner, condiment section on the other corner where you can mix your own sauce to go with the food, and an ice cream dispenser in the middle.

The food I got for my first serving. The ingredients were mostly fresh and we noted that some of the more popular ones were the chicken cheese balls, enoki mushroom and tofu which ran out once or twice during the one hour plus we were there. My friends gave the enoki mushroom, tofu, cabbage and meatballs their thumbs up while my personal favourites were the mushroom balls and chicken cheese balls. Just be cautioned that the cheese in the chicken cheese ball can be really scalding upon cooking!

The sauce I got for myself was the Miso Tare (soybean paste) sauce to go with the Kimuchi soup base we got although there were also others like spicy peanut sauce and ponzu sauce, which was actually recommended for pairing up with the Shabu Shabu soup base. There were also extra toppings like spring onions and chopped garlic that you can add to enhance the favour of the sauce. One friend liked the ponzu sauce while the other two opted to have the meat without any sauce so that they could "savour the taste more". Me? I love the food with the Miso Tare sauce which was also sweet, although the chicken meatballs were good enough to eat on its own without any sauce.

We could opt for two soup bases and we went for Sukiyaki and Kimuchi. The soup were quite okay, not very salty, but it should be noted that I only tasted and drank a little before adding the meat and not after.

The meat was fresh and very thinly sliced which meant that it cooked pretty fast which was a bonus. However, unlike the items at the healthy bar where you can pick all you want, you need to order the meat from the staff if you want more, supposedly to keep the meat fresh and to prevent over-ordering and food wastage.

Finally, dessert! There were three flavours to choose from when we went: chocolate, vanilla and a combination of half-chocolate and half-vanilla. I got all three and topped it with a generous amount of nuts topping. There were also chocolate rice and cornflakes toppings. The ice cream was very smooth but overall I felt the dessert selection was quite limited, but then again this was a hot pot restaurant where people go more for the meat than dessert anyway.

While the food was quite okay, the same cant really be said for the service. The staff were not very attentive and we had to ask for a refill for our green tea thrice even with different servers. There was also a time we asked to ask twice for four containers of pork and two chicken and they eventually only sent two of each. The server said he would send the other two servings of pork in a while, which he never did. To be fair, it was during dinnertime and the place was packed but we were not very impressed with the service.

Environment-wise, we thought it was quite okay. We liked the decor which felt quite cozy but given that this was a hotpot restaurant, the place was quite noisy especially during dinner time. However we agreed that this was a nice choice for a family or friend gathering over a round of hotpot. But here's a catch, there's a time limit so you will need to keep track of the time and pace your timing so you don't end up having to rush and gobble up your food towards the end like we did.

Overall, the total bill came up to about $119.60 for four person which we felt was a little on the high side. However, we were pretty much bloated after the meal. Personally I can't really say it was worth it for myself since I ate more chicken cheese balls and ice cream (LOL) than the meat slices but my friends decided that they more or less got their money worth considering the amount of meat they ate.
