Not just Pasta and Sausages...
Ambush
2013-10-18
This would be my first visit to the new shopping mall 'Jem'. Rather than walking around the shopping mall aimlessly, I was actually invited to a food tasting event at a 'European Restaurant'. And the following are the list of items that we have tasted that day. 'Roasted Pork Knuckle (Half)' served with Sauerkraut, Light Brown Sauce and Mashed Potato'Pork Knuckle', a difficult delicacy to savour. So why is it a difficult delicacy? While trying out the 'Pork Knuckle' that different types of restaurants are offering, I find the part of cutting the extremely crispy skin to be the most annoying. Some of the 'Pork Knuckle' out there in the market are as hard as a rock and the dining experience could easily turn into an unpleasant one. As for the 'Pork Knuckle' over here, they have nicely sliced it up into small slices, which makes it much more easier to be shared among a group of friends. Although I find parts of the skin to be a bit too tough, but the meat is pretty tender and it goes well with all the side dishes.'CurryWurst'Though it's known as 'CurryWurst', it's actually 'Bratwurst'(a type of German Sausage) topped with 'Curry Powder', 'Ketchup' and 'Onions'. The 'CurryWurst' were crispy on the outside and it's juicy, bouncy and tender on the inside. On top of that, the nice mixture between the taste of the 'Curry Powder' and the 'Sausage' is heavenly and it's worth a big (+). Fries wise, isn't something special, but you can dipped it in the sauce to enhance the taste of the fries even further.'Baby Scallop & Flying Fish Roe - Squid Ink Sauce'This is a plate of 'Black Coloured Pasta' topped with Japanese 'Hotate'(Scallop). Though the overall texture of the 'Pasta' is slightly a bit oily, but the overall taste is pretty interesting. In fact, there's a mix of butter and squid ink in every single bite, which is amazingly interesting. 'Apple Crisp'Probably because I'm not a big fan of chocolate, therefore out of all the desserts that I have tried over here, I find the taste of this to be the best. It's a slice of apple pie topped with a scoop of 'Vanilla' ice cream and sweet 'Caramel' syrup. For a much more detailed review and more photos, do visit:http://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2013/10/not-just-pasta-and-sausages.html…查看更多

Prawn Noodles - S$3Depending on my mood, sometimes I will go for the Dry version and sometimes I will go for the Soup version of the 'Prawn Noodles'. For a start, ingredients like 'Prawns'(Of course lah), 'Meatballs', slices of 'Fish Cake', 'Beansprouts', 'Kang Kong' and few slices of 'lean meat'. If you are into spicy stuff, the dry version of the 'Prawn Noodles' over here can really be very spicy. Besides for the powderish 'Chilli Powder', you can also add the 'sliced chilli', which can really spice up the overall taste of this dish to the MAX and that's where the bowl of non pepperish, tasty soup steps in. The reason why I keep going back for more 'Prawn Noodles' was mainly due to the fresh ingredients and the tasty soup that they are offering over here. On top of that, the stall owner is pretty polite and he keeps saying 'Thank You' for patronising his stall and he really puts his heart in ensuring the quality of the delicious bowl of 'Prawn Noodles' that will be delivered to all the customers everyday. :)…查看更多

S$2.40 for 8 pieces.Everyone has a different way of judging a good 'Chwee Kueh'. Some goes for the 'Dried Radish', some goes for the texture of the 'Chwee Kueh', some goes for the 'Chilli' and some of them would be looking at the combination of all 3 factors. As for myself, I go for the chilli of the 'Chwee Kueh' and the chilli that they are offering over here are fantastic and I love it... The crunchy and generous portion of 'Dried Radish' and the soft 'Chwee Kueh' are a big (+) too.Even though, the overall taste of the 'Chwee Kueh' have dropped over the last 20+ years, but it's still remains to be pretty good. And I can empty the whole plate of 'Chwee Kueh' and all the ingredients effortlessly. However, I still prefer the taste back then where 'Chwee Kueh' were once offered at a price of S$1 for 5 pieces and Tiong Bahru Market used to be a wet market. …查看更多

Thai Food Feast...
Baan Khun Nai Authentic Thai Cuisine
2013-09-27
I have been invited to a food tasting event at this Thai restaurant in Katong area. Even though I'm late for the event, but I still managed to reach the place as they were about to dig into the first dish...'Dry Curry Pork' - S$8This would be my favourite dish that night. Although, it's given the name 'Dry Curry Pork', but in actual fact the succulent 'Pork' have this nice aroma and taste of good 'Curry'. On top of that, the bite size pieces of 'Pork' not only makes it easy to chew, it also acts as a pretty good finger food too. 'Claypot Tung Hoon Prawn' - S$16This is actually very good. The 'Tung Hoon'(Vermicelli) is pretty moist and even though it's dark in colour, it's not too salty. Too bad, I have to keep a bit of space in my stomach for the desserts, else I would have emptied the whole claypot of 'Tung Hoon' within minutes. By the way, there's lots of prawns inside this small little pot of 'Tung Hoon' too. Click here for more photos and a detailed review:http://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2013/09/thai-food-feast.html…查看更多

Have a break(from reading) have a Pig Organ Soup..
Pig Organ Soup
2013-09-20
In the past, I was a frequent user of the National Library located near Bugis Junction. Before stepping in and after stepping out from the National Library, I would never miss the opportunity to savour the delicious Pig Organ Soup(猪杂汤) located in the coffee shop located at Level 1 of Bras Basah Complex. This is the Pig Organ Soup that I'm referring to. The ingredients thrown into every one bowl of Pig Organ Soup is satisfactory. Besides that, peanuts were provided for free too. Best of all, you can choose to have the soup with either white rice or yam rice. Isn't that great? On top of that, the soup itself was clear enough for you to actually see the amount of ingredients thrown into each and every one bowl of Pig Organ Soup. There's meatballs, lean meat, livers, salted vegetables, etc... which is a big whao... For a start, the meatballs are bouncy and chewy. The liver isn't too raw and too overcook, which I love it. The rest of the meaty stuff are pretty average though. However, the best is yet to come. For me, the best part about this soup would be the crunchy salted vegetables. They are crunchy and not to salty. Just for the salted vegetables alone, I could easily pop down a whole bowl of Yam Rice easily. By the way, the Yam Rice over here also comes with a nice fragrance of Yam and if you are into red chillies, you could emptied a whole bowl of Yam Rice with the help of the fiery sliced chillies too. I guess the biggest drawback would be the taste of the soup. Although it's tasty but it doesn't comes with a over concentrated meaty taste. Here's a photo of the stall and the uncle behind all the cooking... Astons - Good and Delicious Western food @ afforda
Astons Express
2013-09-17
This is one of the places that I have been visiting for the past few years for delicious and affordable western food. Best of all, they won't charge you the ridiculous 10% service charge at some of the branches, unlike some other restaurants that will charge you a 10% service charge when they have absolutely no services at all. I still remember that they only used to have a branch at Katong only, but over the past few years, they have been opening a branch after another and now I could say that they were widely spread around Singapore.Crispy Fried Chicken with 2 Side-dish(Potato Salad and Mashed Potato)Most of the main dishes at Astons will come 2 side dishes. In fact, sometimes for the sake of the good sides dishes, rather than placing an order for the 'Double Chicken Set', I would place an order for 2 different types of 'Chicken set meal' and that would give you 4 side dishes to choose. The 'Potatoes' in the 'Potato' salad are crunchy and nice, in comparison the 'Mashed Potato' are gluey and yummy too. In fact, I have tried most of the side dishes over here and most of them are pretty yummy and delicious. Even though the 'Crispy Fried Chicken' is succulent and crispy, but when you are comparing it with the side dishes, the amount of excitement that I'm getting from the side dishes are far more than the main dish. A taste that you grow up with - Dessert
Tian Tian Yuan Dessert House
2013-09-10
Been a local living in a area pretty close to Tiong Bahru for the past 20+ years, One would definitely have dine at TIong Bahru market before. And frankly speaking, I still miss the old old Tiong Bahru wet market a lot. I remember that I have been eating the 'Chwee Kueh(水粿)' bought from Tiong Bahru Market ever since I was studying in the nearby kindergarten, having lunch at Tiong Bahru Market after my classes during my secondary school days and having my meals at Tiong Bahru Market during my weekends.Left: Ice Cream Ice Kacang, Right: ChendolUp till today, they are still providing cheap, delicious and big portions of desserts. And they are open to special request to customise your desserts. For example: I would place an order for Chendol or Ice Kacang with only Red Beans once in a short while. And frankly speaking, at a relatively low price of S$1.50 per bowl, you are getting a lot of ingredients and it tastes pretty good too.Click here for more photos and a detailed review:http://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2011/07/taste-that-you-grow-up-with-dessert.html…查看更多

Remaking the Claypot Rice
招牌石锅饭店
2013-09-06
Some dishes have a very long history behind it and it ain't an easy task trying to break away from the same old method of preparing the dish and coming up with a new way of preparing it. However...'Stone Pot Chicken'(香香鸡肉)Doesn't this dish looks beautiful to you? There's a nice mixture of different colors. Ingredients like 'Special Marinated Chicken', 'Sliced Salted Fish', 'Sausage', 'Mushroom' and 'Vegetable' have been added into this dish. With a lot of tedious stirring, I finally managed to stir all the ingredients inside the 'Stone Bowl' nicely together. Here comes the nice part about this dish. The taste of this is pretty much similar to a normal 'Claypot Rice' and unlike the normal 'Claypot', this does not have the problem of the rice sticking onto the bowl. Therefore like some of my friends, if you really love the taste and the texture ofthe overcook, crispy rice, you could really savour it till the very last bit over here. On top of the crispy rice, each individual bite also comes with a nice fragrance of 'Salted fish' and a good mix of the sweet ingredients listed in the above. Even though the portion of 'Claypot Rice' that I'm getting over here are much more smaller than the regular ones, but I don't need to worry about the bones of the 'Chicken' and I could really emptied the whole bowl without any wastage.(By the way, as compared to any other types of bowl, the 'Stone Bowl' can keep the food warm for a much more longer period of time, which is a big (+) )For full review and more photos, please visit http://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2013/08/remaking-claypot-rice.html…查看更多

Zhong Hua Steamboat (中华火锅,拉面) at the intersection

They have a large variety of ingredients. For example, a large spread of vegetables, noodles, seafood, poultry, etc... They also have cooked food like Fried Bee Hoon, chilli crab, fried chicken, fried buns, etc...One word to describe the Si Chuan Ma La soup base, Shiok. This is probably the best 'Si Chuan Ma La' steamboat soup base that I have tasted for years. You can actually feel the spicy taste using your tongue and eventually making it numb. More Shiok. And one thing that make the soup completely different from the other 'Si Chuan Ma La' soup base was, some of the soup base out there had a thick layer of chilli oil in the soup and they would named it as a 'Si Chuan Ma La' soup but this one doesn't. You could actually identify the ingredients that they were using to make the soup base so tasty. For full review and more photos, please visithttp://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2011/07/zhong-hua-steamboat-at-intersection-of.html…查看更多

Another good alternative for Kaya Bread
五脚基
2013-08-26
When it comes to Kaya Bread, most Singaporean's will thought of Ya Kun. However, this place also prepares a similar type of Kaya Bread as compared to Ya Kun and at the same time cheaper too. They are preparing the Kaya Bread using a similar method as compared to those at Ya Kun. There's the crispy bread, the nice layer of Kaya spread and a sliced of cold butter on both ends of the bread. However, the good thing about this stall would be the nice short queue that they have over here. But the drawback would be the limited number of Kaya Bread that they are selling on a daily basis. Here's a photo of the stall itself. It's hidden away in a corner of this food market.Click here for more photos and a more detailed review:http://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2011/07/ya-kun-isnt-only-place-for-kaya-bread.html…查看更多

Bak Kut Teh(肉骨茶) - An old time favourite
亚华肉骨茶餐室
2013-08-23
Peanuts(花生)+ Preserved Vegetables(梅菜) + Youtiao(油条)Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh(亞華肉骨茶)Although, Bak Kut Teh in Singapore is slightly a bit costly, but after tasting and trying numerous Bak Kut Teh stores in Singapore, this is one of the better ones. The service provided by the place is considerably good as compared to the other Bak Kut Teh stores. For example, the waitress would top up the soup of the Bak Kut Teh automatically, topping up of the soup is free and the best part is the Bak Kut given in each bowl of Bak Kut Teh was fantastic. Even though the soup had a lot of pepper in it, I still managed to empty the soup of the Bak Kut Teh a few times. Dim Sum is meant for Supper?
瑞春點心
2013-08-20
Probably, during different parts of the day, one would try to eat different kinds of food. As for me, eating Dim Sum in the middle of the night was quite an interesting experience. Usually, Dim Sum were the kind of food that you would eat for Breakfast but eating it for supper was a completely different experience for me.After I have given the 'Carrot Cake' over here a good try, I have been a big fan of this 'Dim Sum' place for at least 3-4 years. The 'Carrot Cake' not only come with a generous portion, the fragrance and the taste are fantastic too and the nice crispy texture would be something that one could look forward to. The 'Yang Chun Mian' over here would be something that I would highly recommend too. The Noodles are handmade by one of the chefs over here and it's pretty chewy and springy. Even though it doesn't come with a lot of ingredients, but it's definitely something that the Noodles lovers shouldn't miss.By the way, the 'Har Gao'(Shrimp Dumplings) over here are a big (+) too. The amount of fresh prawns added into the 'Dim Sum' are extremely generous. I wonder why didn't the prawns burst out of the Dumplings itself. By the way, one thing that I like about the 'Har Gao' over here would be the nice balance between the skin and the ingredients used in the process of making this 'Dim Sum'.(However, too bad that have impose the additional charges into the dine-in 'Dim Sum' orders already. I kinda miss the cheap 'Dim Sum' that they were offering back then.)Click here for more photos and a more detailed review:http://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2011/07/dim-sum-is-meant-for-supper.html…查看更多

If you have been having a lot of heavy meals for the past few days, you should consider giving vegetarian food a try. Not only the appearance looks pretty much the same as the genuine thing, the taste of it are pretty much the same too.'Vegetarian Laksa'I don't know how the chef manage to do it, but the taste of the soup of the laksa were pretty close to those that I had tried outside in the hawkers. (However, it would be great if they can remake the taste of the cockles. )For more photos and full review, please visithttp://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2011/07/sometimes-change-is-needed-d.html…查看更多

Chicken/Mutton MurtabakNot only the Murtabak that they are offering were pretty generous in terms of the size and the ingredients that they had stuffed inside, almost every single bite comes with a good mixture of vegetables and meat, which makes it ultra yummy. This drink is a combination of the following, Chinese tea, lime and lemon slices. Trust me, it's a drink that you must try when you are going there for the first time. Although it's pretty sour but it's super refreshing too. Singapore most delicious Ramen - Marutama Ramen
Marutama Ra-Men
2013-08-07
This is currently my favourite Japanese Ramen stall in Singapore.'Nama Karashi Ramen'For the soup base, rather than using the common strong salty Pork Broth, they are using Chicken Broth over here. There are using the thinner type of Ramen noodles over here too, which is one of my favourite type of Japanese Ramen noodles. On top of that, the Ramen Egg, 'Ajitsuke Tamago' that they are using over here are one of the best in Singapore. The half boiled egg yolk + the boiled egg white combination makes this a must try. And if you are lucky enough, you might be getting a generous thick slice of 'CHar Siew' too.Actually, I would order a bowl of 'Nama Karashi Ramen', 'Ajitsuke Tamago' and 'Kaedama'(Adding an extra portion of Noodles) twice, whenever I visit Marutama Ramen Store. Some would ask, why do I order Kaedama twice when a bowl of Nama Karashi Ramen is sufficient for an average person. Actually, for the Marutama Ramen Store at Liang Court, you will be given a free topping after you had Kaedama twice. Without thinking, I would always order for an extra piece of "Char Siew".Click here for a more detailed review and photos:http://nekyouto-food.blogspot.sg/2011/07/singapore-most-delicious-ramen-marutama.html…查看更多
