My friend & I were around Upper Bukit Timah area and decided to give Burger Shack a try! Headed here for dinner and the place was relatively quiet, just a few students dining in.I ordered an Original Beef Burger ($5.70) while my friend ordered a BBQ Chicken Burger ($6.20). We both top up $3.20 for fries and a drink! I find that given the price, both the burger and fries tasted pretty decent. Overall, a good place to chill over dinner at an affordable price!

A rather dull dish as it had too much tomato content in its sauce, making it too sweet. The spaghetti was also a lil' overcooked, missing out on the chewy bouncy texture. The meatballs had a slightly stronger beef taste to it, and I personally didn't really like the sharp taste and smell of it.

Fresh calamari that was fried to a perfect golden crispy brown! I like the fresh tender calamari used and there was a crunch to every bite. Perhaps it's just me being a super calamari fan, anything that's fresh appeals to me. A slightly better QC would help though, as there were some really huge pieces clumped together and had thick batter that covered the taste of squid rings.

The serving of this shocked us as we'd expected it to serve as our sides, given that we were eating at around 3pm. It was a huge bowl, bigger than the spaghetti, but awesome for sharing! Just that we didn't expect such huge servings and over-ordered (again). The shoestring fries had special seasoning that brought out the savory bits and were fried just right, with no soggy fries at all! Coupled with the cheese sauce, it was a great blend of flavours. The beef bits, however, gave a slight 'mexican' taste to it, perhaps it was seasoned with jalepenos to give that twist of flavour.

Same as the one you can find at Island Creamery, the secret to great brownies is probably serving it warm. I like how the brownie doesn't have overpowering chocolate taste (chocoholics might disagree with me) yet brought up the slight sweetness of chocolates and wasn't too sticky. The nuts added into the brownie also added to the varied texture of the brownie, giving it a homemade touch. The berry icecream, however, was quite disappointing as it had many icy bits to it, and wasn't smooth icecream. It felt like it had probably been placed in the fridge for a prolonged period of time.

Overall, it was a good experience and I would love to re-visit and try their burgers! After all, they're supposed to be known for their burgers. The food isn't exactly spectacular, but taking into consideration its ambience, some hits, and the affordability (given the huge servings), it is worth a visit. It's a really nice place for chillin' out and I can imagine it as one of my favourite haunts if I were still a student!

Burgers may be the main item that they sell, but that’s not it; this place offers other items such as Pasta and mains such as Sirloin Steak and Chicken Chop as well. You are able to trade your burger buns for Garlic Butter Rice at no additional costs and additional condiments can also be added at a certain cost. You can also opt for a meal at $3.50 ($2.70 for students) for drinks and fries or/and double patty at $2.50.

For those people who are craving for Pork burgers, they do have the BBQ Pulled Pork Burger on the menu. This one here has the buns switched to Garlic Butter Rice (also known as the Hamburg Rice), which in my opinion is a better option. The rice is fragrant from the garlic, and the butter when melted, adds a tinge of saltiness into the rice which is just tasty. The Pulled Pork was delectable, though slightly on the dry side. The fries here are not to be missed; the garlic-flavoured fries just don’t taste like your regular fries from McDonald’s, and the cajun seasoning makes it slightly spicy which adds a kick in it’s flavour. They are also crispy and retains the crispiness for a while even though they are cooled down.

The Balik Kampung Chicken is another new item in the menu. Like the BBQ Pulled Pork Burger, I opted for the Hamburg Rice option and added sauteed mushroom and bacon and upgraded it to a set with fries. This “burger” consists of onions, chicken and chili that’s pretty similar to sambal chili. The chicken is battered and fried, but didn’t lose the juiciness and tenderness that some fried chicken lacked. The sambal chili gave it a very local taste and gave it a slightly spicy kick for the chicken patty which would seem dull and not “kampung” enough without it.

If you are into authentic Ramli burgers, this might not appeal to you. The sauteed mushrooms seen in this burger is an add-on that I opted for. This burger, unlike actual Ramli burgers do not wrap the egg around the patty but rather just inserts the pan-fried egg into the burger on a layer of it’s own. I was fine with how the burger tasted, but I guess in order to enjoy this one you might have to rid off the impressions of how an original Ramli burger should have been, and it would be a decent burger to have. One issue that I have with all the burgers here though is the bun; it just feels a tad too thick and dense and seems to be able to fill one up pretty quickly. Besides that, the bun unlike other places are just served as-is; no grilling nor any spread.

The Tokyo Mentaiko Pasta is a rather bad miss in my opinion. There does not seem to be any traces of Mentaiko found when served because it’s served dry. There may be a hint of Mentaiko in it’s taste, but it was too light to be noticeable. Overall, it just looked plain, tasted bland, awfully dry and quite dreadful to have.

Established by the people behind Island Creamery, Burger shack has been one of the popular hangout for student seeking a quick bite after school. True enough, it does get crowded in the afternoons with students busy chatting about the latest news and the occasional gossips that who knows might you or even me?

Set those juicy gossips aside and sink your teeth into their burgers. Particularly their BBQ Pulled Pork Burger which I find those little meat strips soaked and tasty. The buns though tasted a bit stale and dry but let’s face it, quality buns and prime meat patties would cost way more than what Burger Shack is offering. So if you’re someone who seeks nothing but the best, may I suggest you to seek Relish instead?

By the way, burgers are suppose to be eaten with your hands but if you’re lazy to dirty your hands like me, fork and knife would do just fine.

ZX on the other hand has cravings for steaks and we decided to give their Sirloin Steak a try. I vividly remembered the cashier asking me about the wellness of my steak which I clearly mentioned I preferred my steak medium rare. Somehow by a stroke of luck, I ended up with slab of well-done steak appearing in front of me.

It was even disappointing after I sent it back to kitchen for the real deal and then ended up with a new slab which was well-done on one half and fully raw on the other. I know I can never compare a prime cut from renown steakhouses in Singapore but I believe with fifteen bucks to spare, I can get a better one at the hawker center instead.

My friend had the Grilled Chicken burger while I have the Mushroom Swiss burger. We also ordered nacho fries to share. The nacho fries was surprisingly quite good. We enjoyed it very much. For the burgers, they were nice but not great. My friend does not like the bun and I find the price a bit expensive.

Occupying the space that used to house Melvados at King's Arcade along Bukit Timah Road, Burger Shack boasts a white spartan cafe like interior with a couple of tables and chairs for dine in customers. How this place works is simple. You place your order at the counter, make payment and wait for your order number to be called out to collect your food.

Double Original Burger - Greedy me couldn't be satisfied with a single patty hence I opted for the double ($7.70) with an addition of sauteed mushrooms ($1.50) and bacon ($1.50). To be honest, it was smaller then what I had expected and the quality was downright disappointing. The beef patties didn't taste fresh and had quite a bit of fatty meat in it. On the upside, you could see it as the patty being hand chopped rather then machine processed. Apparently their buns are made from scratch, like Everything with Fries so comparisons might seem inevitable. Actually no comparisons are needed as Burger Shack's buns came across as dry and hard - worse then most buns I've had. I honestly can't bring myself to believe that the buns are made from scratch.

Grilled Chicken Burger - The grilled chicken burger was sandwiched between the hard and stale buns but at least the breast meat was relatively tender. It would have been better if the fatty skin had been removed and they had added some seasoning into the otherwise bland and flat piece of meat. The tomato puree atop didn't help matters much. Don't get me started with the shoestring fries, which were hard, dry and proved quite a chore to chomp through. But at least there was seasoning.

We paid about $22 for our dinner and walked out of the place smelling of food from head to toe. They really need to do something about the ventilation of the place. Food for thought - Success in one area of F&B doesn't guarantee success when diversifying into other branches of the everchanging culinary landscape. And that is something Island Creamery has to think about. Should it leverage on its core competency and continue to sell ice cream or should it move into offering burgers If the latter, I suggest they relook into their burger recipes before Burger Shack dilutes the Island Creamery brand name.

The steak was pan-grilled, not char grilled. It was also served with fries (similar to Long John Silver's), garden salad and a corn on the cob. I loved the corn, juicy with its natural sweetness!

Will probably head back for a second time.
