The burger was a classic beef one, with a sizable patty layered with cheddar, tomatoes, ketchup, lettuce, onions and mustard. It was a fairly large burger, and the ingredients worked well together. My main quibble would be the excessive amount of ketchup used, making the burger too sour for my liking. Apart from that, it was good.

. Oh well, at least we did not pay the full price for 3 cakes. The blueberry cheese cake had a good balance of blueberry compote (which wasn't sour) and cheese. The cheesecake was creamy and not too sweet too. The chocolate cake had dark chocolate mousse in the sponge cake with hazelnut crisps which was rather nice. The dark chocolate was not at all bitter though and taste was between a dark and milk chocolate. The crisps were a fun addition to the soft texture of mousse and sponge cake. Overall, it is worth a try but I find their cakes rather expensive.

Pique Nique should be no stranger to cafe hoppers. Ever since with its first outlet appearing in Ngee Ann City, it had been known as a place for all-day breakfast and sweet treats. I was craving for desserts that night and thus I opted for Chococheese cupcake ($4.80) - love the soft and creamy cheese and Strawberry cheesecake ($7.50) - people who don't really have a sweet tooth will definitely like this whereas my friend ordered the big breakfast ($15.80). Comes with baked beans with capsicums, sausage, bacon, toast, salad, choice of sunny side-up, poached or scrambled eggs and a complimenting orange juice or a cup of coffee. It was decent, but lacking the wow factor.

I'd prefer dessert more than having brunches there.

I managed to find someone to have a little 'picnic' with me at Pique Nique and we went on a Saturday evening. We were expecting a queue especially since this was a weekend evening but we were rather thrown off to find the place nearly empty. It got me wondering if Pique Nique might be more popular in the morning instead due to its breakfast and brunch menu...

Despite the uncertainty, we decided to stick to our original plan after actually seeing the place in person. The place looked very welcoming especially with the lovely array of sweets and desserts in the display counter at the entrance, which just seemed intent on beckoning us in. There were the Classic Chocolate Whoopie ($2.15) and pretty little Macarons ($2.15) ranging in flavours from Salty Caramel and Pistachio to French Chocolate. There were also cupcakes like Lemon Meringue Cupcake ($5.15) and Banana Split Cupcake ($5.15) as well as cakes like Chocorocco ($8.55) and Strawberry Cheesecake ($8.05). How can anyone resist such pretty desserts, right??

With its English Garden themed interior, the entire place was very tastefully decorated and had a homely, rustic charm to it. There was even a "tree" planted in the middle of the cafe, which added to the illusion of having a lovely picnic in the place. Due to the lack of crowd, the place was relatively quiet. That and the cozy ambience of the place made it very pleasant to hold conversations. We thought that Pique Nique would certainly make a nice stop to try out the desserts and enjoy a small chit chat while soaking in the environment. We were pretty impressed with the decor, so much that we took quite a long time to order our food because we spent the time trying to (secretly) take snapshots of the place!
Fortunately, the staff were mostly understanding and patient with us!

Single Shot Espresso ($4.00) - left
The cup of Espresso was not even half filled but this was probably roughly the portion for a single shot (about 30ml). This was quite concentrated in taste and there was a creamy foam on the surface of the coffee as well, but for $4.00, we found this to be really pricey and regretted not getting the Latte at $5.00 instead.

Hot Chocolate ($7.00) - right
The cup of hot chocolate didn't come with the fluffy cloud marshmallow like it mentioned on the menu, although the staff made sure to inform us of it. I was sorely disappointed about it, but nevertheless, we still wanted to try the hot chocolate. Fortunately, this came in a bigger and fully filled cup. This didn't look very smooth on the surface but it was slightly thick and the taste of cocoa was strong with a slight bitter aftertaste. It wasn't very sweet either although I'd have liked it to be a tad more so.

Hot Iron Waffle with Salty Caramel ($11.80)
This was the best among all the food we ordered. The waffle was crispy on the outside and was quite soft and oh-so-spongy inside! The ice cream was thick, creamy and rich with a strong taste of fragrant vanilla. I found the caramel taste to be a tad light, but otherwise this was simply a delight to eat! We had originally planned to share this but ended up agreeing that we might as well have skipped the fries and got two portions of the waffles instead for each of us!

Whoopie Fries ($8.80)
Initially fearing that the waffles might not be too filling for us, we also got the fries to share. Oh boy, bad mistake. The portion was HUGE and we struggled to finish it between the two of us. We ended up giving up and not finishing it in the end, which was kind of a waste. The fries itself was pretty nice although we found the seasoning powder to be rather dry; it was a tad grating on the throat after several fries. You definitely need lots of water with this. The sauce was disappointing though, just normal chilli and tomato ketchup with the mayonnaise in between. For the price, we would expect a better, or inhouse, blend of dip. Overall, this was something we felt we could do without in this meal.

Chococheese Cupcake ($4.80)
It was a tough choice between getting a cake or a cupcake but we eventually opted for the cupcake. The Chococheese Cupcake was a chocolate cupcake topped with cream cheese and chocolate shavings. The price for the cupcake listed on their display counter was $5.15 but we paid $4.80 for it. Not sure if the cakes and cupcakes would be a little cheaper if you dine in, but we still found it to be a bit pricey at $4.80. However, the cupcake was decent and the chocolate shavings given were rather big pieces! The thick cream cheese topping was also quite delicious although we found the cupcake to be a tad dry.

Snickerdoodle Cinnamon Shortbread ($6.50)
We noticed that Pique Nique was also selling "old fashioned homemade" cookies and shortbreads in pretty little packagings, which would make really great gifts! The cookies came in various flavours such as Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies, Dannish Butter Cookies, Scottish Shortbread and Chocolate Butter Ball ($6.95 each). We bought the Snickerdoodle Cinnamon Shortbread to go, although we were also tempted to get the Chocolate Butter Ball too! This was priced at $6.95 but we got it at $6.50. I personally found this to be worth its price. The bite-sized cookies were coated with cinammon sugar and tasted strongly of cinnamon. They were also very crisp and crunchy and remained so even after a week! I'd highly recommend these cookies although I'd suggest finishing them soon after opening as these tend to expire quite fast compared to mass-produced ones.

After our not-so-cheap "picnic" ($50.50 for two person), we found the waffle and snickerdoodle cookies to be our best purchases yet - these were worth every cent despite the price. The espresso and whooper fries on the other hand were not exactly value for money although the portion of the fries was quite a lot and would probably be more reasonable if you are sharing the food and cost with a group of friends. The cupcake and hot chocolate were decent but perhaps a tad pricey. Service was also decent and the staff were generally friendly, understanding and patient.

The ambience, in my personal opinion, was certainly a major selling point. If you are looking to have a casual, laid back meal with friends or a date and cost is not a major concern, then a "picnic" at Pique Nique might be just for you! I certainly wouldn't mind coming back again for the waffle and to check out the other desserts like the macarons and cakes, and especially the other 'homemade' cookies!

Out of the 6 macarons that I bought, I prefer the vanilla one. Its not too sweet and the fragrance vanilla smell really lights up my taste buds. Others were great too! Not too sweet and taste just nice.

I was craving for a good brunch that was light, hence I went for the Norwegian Benedict ($14.00). This item probably got its name from the smoked salmon, which is coupled with sour cream atop English Muffins and a salad at the side. The whole dish was of a decent quality, but apart from the pretty presentation there was not really much to be mentioned. Overall it was lacking the wow-factor.

The Classic Benedict ($12.00) differs from the Norwegian Benedict by replacing the smoked salmon with ham and sour cream with hollandaise sauce. The hollandaise sauce seemed rather savoury though it came with an aftertaste I was not particularly fond of. Apart from that much of the dish remains largely similar, and also was not really outstanding.

The Pique Nique’s Big Breakfast ($15.80) is somewhat like a full works in the menu. Comes with baked beans with capsicums, sausage, bacon, toast, salad, choice of sunny side-up, poached or scrambled eggs and a complimenting orange juice or a cup of coffee. The baked beans were rather impressive as it did not carry the generic taste of canned baked beans and instead was heavy with the taste of tomato puree nicely spiced with capsicums. The sausage was tender and the bacon was crispy though slightly dry. The others were again decent, but lacking the wow factor.

The Latte ($5.00) was actually pretty good as it felt rather balanced and neither too acidic or burnt. The cute latte art definitely got me.

In the afternoons and evenings, there are no fancy lightings or lamps, just the natural light coming in from the windows. (However, sitting by the window would invite glances from people queueing up for taxis) The furniture and natural lighting makes for great food photography and hanging out with your friends. From their menu and decor, I infer that they are famous for their fries and desserts. The prices are kinda on the high side though, so as much as they sound or look appealing, I usually refrain from entering to give my wallet a break, even though my stomach wants to walk in so badly.

Fortunately, there are promotional sets available at the JCube outlet and I've dined at Pique Nique twice, once for lunch and once for high tea. On both occasions, my stomach and wallet walked out in delight.

They have an on-going high tea set promotion everyday until 6pm, where you get a slice of cake and tea/coffee for just $8.50++. Reasonably priced. I had English Breakfast Tea and a slice of Passionfruit Meringue Cake. The passionfruit cake was good as it was creamy and moist, but it was a little on the sweet side. The portion of cake is reasonably sized as well for the price. The tea was quite a surprise as I didn't expect to get a whole teapot full of English Breakfast Tea with real tea leaves inside (instead of a Twinings sachet of sort), considering that my friend who opted for coffee only got a single cup. There was enough tea to refill my cup 4-5 times and even then it was fragrant and didn't taste diluted.

My lunch visit happened last week when I found out that they had awesome $6 lunch deals, with $3 add-on for a starter (soup or salad) and dessert. Considering that the main courses cost 15-20 bucks in the menu and the desserts were at least 5 bucks, this was really value-for-money. I opted for the Meatball Pasta and Crab Chowder soup. The portions were generally filling. The meatballs were more like 'pieces of meat', but they tasted great and the tomato sauce of the pasta was not too overbearing (I cannot stand strong tomato flavours). The pasta noodles on the other hand were cooked perfectly, not too soft. The soup was generous with the crab meat and other add ons, but it was served mildly cold. The bread that came with the soup was also hard to bite.

For dessert, you get to choose between 2 pieces of macarons or a cupcake. The range of cupcake flavours they have on display was more attractive to me and I decided to go with the Violet Flower Cupcake. I've never seen, let alone taste, a violet flower flavoured cupcake before, but suffice to say, after tasting it I'd want more. It has a unique sweet flavour to the cupcake base that is generally pleasant. It also comes with a generous serving of buttercream icing which was not too sweet. The interesting thing about the cupcake was a little purple tube at the side that I had assumed to be a piece of candy or stick biscuit. It was filled with raspberry puree that you could pipe onto the cupcake on your own. That was a major plus point for me: I love playing with my food. The raspberry puree was a little sour, which blends nicely with the sweetness of the cupcake. Mmm.. simply sinful.

I wholly enjoyed my whole Pique Nique experience, both times. I don't think that the main courses are really worth 15-20 bucks on the daily menu (unless the portions were larger), but go for the desserts. They're really good.

Settings of Pique Nique had given us a homely feel with bricks foliage. With a huge tree rooted in the middle of the cafe and next to it was a shipping container painted in lime green . With many wires from the lamp hanging above the table, this modern industrial dining concept was rather eye catching as we entered the restaurant and totally follow suits to the current renovation trends. Not only that, this particular dining area was decorated with grass carpet and had brought out the feel of having a picnic.

I was in the mood for greens that night and ordered Cajun Chicken Salad. Portion was big, consisting of fresh leaves, including my favourite wild roquette, tomatoes, slices of hard boiled egg, shredded cheddar sprinkled with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. It was also served with Zesty Citrus Dressing and was kind of refreshing!

The burger looked small but it was enough to satisfied my stomach! It consists of a thick beef patty, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese with two toasted buns. There were also mustard and tomato sauce in it too. The first bite of the burger was really nice! However, the beef patty was quite salty though. Their fries were really tasty and nice! Better than the average fries served at other shops.
For the bacon and mushroom aglio olio, it tasted great too! However, i think it was slightly quite oily, perhaps due to the fact it was tossed in olive oil.

For the dessert, we had the macaroons where we chose chocolate and pistachio flavours. The chocolate was quite nice but the filing inside was cream cheese instead of chocolate cream. For the pistachio macaron, i find it far too sweet for me and there was not really any pistachio flavour though.

Overall, Pique Nique is quite a great place as it has value for money lunch meals!

Found this simple yet classy looking cafe at J cube. I ordered mushroom mac and cheese, well cooked creamy and moist macaroni and toothsome mushroom hidden underneath a golden crusty cheesy melted cheese. American Breakfast was plain and simple, didn't like that they boiled the sausage instead of the usual grilled ones. Simple toasted bread and canned baked beans doesn't impress me too. If I really have to point out the good thing on this plate, it would be the perfect cooked sunny side up.

I always wanted to try out the cakes on display; everyone of them is a sight to behold. Raspberry angel foodcake, what a pretty name for a cake. And the cake itself is a darling too, but only on the surface. This shop is very good at presentation, but seriously bad at making cakes. This is one of the driest and hardest cake that i have tasted. Not dry and dense enough to be a cookie, not moist and soft enough to be a cake! I left more than half the cake untouched when i left the shop, and i onl

I’ve been hearing about this place from my friends but have yet to try out their food! That morning, I decide to head down and have my breakfast there while waiting for my friend who works nearby. There was a bunch of people but luckily it wasn’t too crowded. I love the decoration of the place, gives me a very warm feeling Service was ok, the food came quite fast!I ordered a Classic Benedict from their All Day Breakfast Menu I love restaurants serving all day breakfasts, sometimes I get cravings

I ordered a Classic Benedict from their All Day Breakfast Menu
I love restaurants serving all day breakfasts, sometimes I get cravings for breakfast during dinner time!

The Classic Benedict comes with 2 poached eggs with toasted English Muffin, steamed ham, hollandaise sauce, served with side salad!
My recommendation to this dish is the poached eggs.
Best part of eating poached eggs is to poke the eggs and have the yolk covering the muffin with ham.
The hollandaise sauce is the best touch to the dish, love the tangy taste of it.

This place is definitely a great place to hang out during the weekends, having meals at a cosy place.

Another impromptu dessert date with the girlfriends landed us at Pique NiqueFrench toast w/salted caramel - nicely toasted thus not soggy with the amount of salted caramel soaked on the toast. whip cream at the side is very lightWaffle w/salted caramel - hot iron waffle also nicely toasted, doesn't tuns soggy easily. vanilla ice-cream is nice when eaten with the salted caramel.
