Not sure how many of you have had the chance to visit the once famous food centre under the Toa Payoh flyover along Whitley road in the 70s – that’s where the birthplace of Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle is.
We ordered only the dry version ($5) since it came with soup as well.
The soup was a vivid orangey colour, a sip of the soup revealed a strong and distinct prawn flavour that we think was too fishy. It also lacked sweetness and the much needed fragrance of a good prawn soup. Compared to many other prawn mee we have evaluated in the last few weeks, the prawn broth of Whitley Road Prawn Noodle was mediocre.
It's a head-scratcher why their loyal fans keep on returning despite the myriad of issues we experienced. Though Whitley Road Prawn Noodle is purportedly one of the best prawn noodles in Singapore, we have our reservations!

I ordered the pork ribs prawn noodles and sadly, the pork ribs were a little on the hard side.

There is usually a queue for this stall so be prepared to wait around 10 to 15 minutes.

One bowl costs $5, decently good.

Whitley Prawn Noodles is a well-known establishment and has several branches elsewhere. The Old Airport Road branch is also very popular with long queues. When it was my turn, the yellow noodles were sold out, leaving me only with the option of mixed noodles/bee hoon, which was quite good anyway. The mixture of noodles and the chilli sauce alongside the shallots was good. Very delicious. The soup was also very flavourful, tasting of prawn heads and pork ribs. For $4, it is reasonably priced.

$4 for a small bowl is usually enough to fill my belly, mainly because we tend to order other side dishes to share. The best part of this dish would have to be the broth. Boiled with prawns heads and seasoned well, it is a treat to the tastebuds as it is both salty and sweet at the same time! The noodles and accompany prawns are just fillers because for me, I could easily finish 2-3 bowls of the broth alone. I also like how the prawns are served in a manner that makes it easy to eat. Goodness knows how much I have struggled to peel whole prawns with just a pair of chopsticks and a spoon, only to have the prawn either fly off the plate or give up eventually and just use my hands. That said, the noodles and prawns are well-cooked and complement the soup nicely.

If you have a bigger appetite, the noodles come in portions of 4/5/8/12 portions so you can stuff yourself silly accordingly. I would highly recommend this place to people who love prawns and more importantly, yummy soups. I'll definitely be back for more when another prawn soup craving hits!

The FoodI ordered big prawn mee dry with lots of chilli and generous portion of crispy pork lard. The big bowl of piping hot savoury and heavenly prawn soup, boiled with hundreds of prawns and pork ribs complements the delicious noodles very well! The medium half-prawns are fresh and sweet while the pork ribs are tasty and tender. The PriceReasonably priced at $5 per bowlOverallI will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this!

I took away a portion of pork ribs prawns noodle from this stall. I opted to have the yellow noodle. It was nicely cooked to the right texture. The medium sized prawns tasted quite fresh. The pork ribs cooked to the right texture too. It was soft enough to be bite off the bone effortlessly. The noodle tasted good after mixed it with sauce mix. A handful of fried pork lards was added to enhance its taste and its flavor.

Our first thought was to come and savour on those usual popular stores in this food centre and this stall was one of them. The queue was long as usual yet their production was fast and thankfully didn't need to wait long for my order to process. I loved the thick prawny broth and drank till the last drop. The taste was still as good just that the portion are getting smaller. Anyway, overall was good.

The prawn noodle stall has a range of prices from $4 to $15 depending on the size of the prawn. The dish came with either mee hoon or yellow noodles. I ordered the cheapest as I don't think it is worthwhile to pay that much for a bowl of prawn noodle. It came with 4 prawns sliced into half. The soup was quite good with that familiar charming and pleasurable prawn-thrashing flavours.

My partner ordered the $5.00 portion of prawn noodle with pork ribs to be taken away for dinner at home. A good portion of yellow noodle came together with 3 pieces of pork ribs and 3 pieces of medium sized halve prawns. A packet of concentrated prawn stock was packed separately. After mixed the yellow noodle well with the chilli, it tasted acceptably good though not exceptionally impressive. The only disappointment has to be the texture of the pork ribs, it tasted a little tough and required a certain effort to eat it. The bonus got to be that packet of flavorful soup, it even left a nice lingering aftertaste.

It was still a pleasant dinner nonetheless.

This is one of my favourite prawn mee stall that I frequent with my family. Something that I look forward about the prawn mee is that the soup base is rich and it does not taste too oily. The prawn are fresh and big , which is also another factor that I look out for when I eat prawn mee. After so many tries, I have not felt thirsty after eating. So I assumed that there is not much MSG added.. probably not at all. Love it.
