The best Lor Mee! Smile Sep 19, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

I was introduced to this stall by my hubby who swears by the Lor Mee here. Indeed, it's the best I have tried so far. By the way, there are three lor mee stalls at this food centre - I'll try the other 2 out soon and see who wins the battle of the lor mee in the end huh? LOL

Lor Mee - $3

What stands out for the lor mee dish here is the very special sauce. Instead of the usual uniformly black thick sauce we get elsewhere, the sauce here is interestingly speckled with some brown bits (some special ingredient or herb I gather) in addition to the bits of egg within. The resulting sauce is very unique and tasty. Working through the dish, I also bit into bits of fried fish that looks a bit like those used for salted fish, but the fish bits here were not salty. Perhaps that's one of their secret item. The other ingredients like ngoh hiang and fish cake given were generous. The egg was also well-braised. A note of warning: Their potent addition of chilli padi on top of the sambal chili given is really very fiery. So if you cannot take spiciness well, remember to at least remove the chilli padi from your dish first. Else, enjoy the hot shiokness!
5/5 for the taste of the lor mee!

Since this stall sells zha jiang mian as well, we ordered it to try too. Hmmm, I'll say just stick to the lor mee. The zha jiang mian here is pretty normal, nothing spectacular.

Char Siew Roasted Pork Rice - $4

There is usually a long queue at this stall during lunch time. Today, I managed to reach this place for early dinner so I did not have to wait for my meal. The roasted meat here is one of the best I have tried so far. The roasted pork is especially good. The skin is crackling crispy and the meat oh-so-tender. The char siew also has a good mix of fatty and lean parts. It was well-marinated without being too sweet or overwhelming in taste. Thus, you can truly savour the tender char siew meat. Highly recommended!

Categories : Pasta | Halal

Due to an unexpected circumstance, me and my friends ended up here for lunch. Since my prior experience with dining in at pizza hut was good, we decided to just go ahead.

There was an interesting "Baked chicken leg with pasta in parchment" - I hope I remembered the name correctly. That's kinda like the western take on the chinese paper-wrapped chicken huh? Well, we were surprised at how good the dish tasted. It was al dente aglio olio within, with plenty of garlic, some chili padi and olive oil. The juices from the chicken leg seeped into the pasta which provided an added fragrance and taste to it. The chicken leg was also well-marinated and tender. A pasta dish which I will not hesitate to order again the next time I'm here smile

Really good Nasi Briyani  Smile Sep 16, 2013

Categories : Malaysian | Café | Halal

I was planning a group lunch and wanted a Halal place in Star Vista, so we chose PappaRich. I heard that the food here was quite good, so we came here to try. I've considered trying it before, but I baulked at the steep prices for what I feel can be had at much lower prices in hawker places.

Anyway, here I am and in my usual style, I chose a dish where I can taste the most number of items at one go tongue
Tada....the super rich combo! It has nasi rice served with a fried chicken drumstick, braised beef, potato, hard boiled egg, lady finger, pappadum and sambal.

Let me break down each of the food items for you yah....

I started with the pappadum which was crispy, tasty and not oily. A good appetiser to start the dish off. You can try dipping it into the delicious sambal sauce at the side.

The yellow nasi rice (probably cooked with tumeric) was lightly spiced with indian herbs and had raisins, peas and carrots in it. The rice was light-tasting enough to go well with the heavier flavoured sides.

When my dish came, you can smell the fragrance of the fried chicken drumstick. I usually don't like fried stuff but boy, this drumstick is really good! The skin was fried till just crispy and there wasn't much fat beneath the skin. The chicken within was tender, juicy and well-marinated. One of the best fried chicken drumsticks I've had in a while.

The braised beef was very lean and well-marinated. I would have preferred it to be a bit more tender but some people might prefer this if they like some bite to their meat. The sauce was spicy with hints of sweetness to it.

The one piece of curry potato given was good. The curry flavour has permeated through the potato and it was delicious. Well, judging from this piece of potato, I'm pretty sure the curry chicken will be good too since the curry was very nice.

The hard boiled egg and the single piece of blanched lady's finger seemed like an after-thought to just boost the number of items in the dish. Oh well, at least I like these items even though I will prefer to have more than just one lady's finger.

Interestingly, my dish had one whole squid in it too, even though it was not mentioned in the menu. Well, I'm not complaining. The squid was cooked in a spicy-sweet sauce and was pretty good.

The serving size for the dish was big, but I think that is what's expected since they are charging $16.90++ for it.

If you don't mind splurging on authentic nasi briyani in a restaurant, this will be a good choice smile

Categories : Hawker Centre | Juices

Usually I do not review drink stalls but this one really stands out! Other than just fruit juices, they offer a lot of combinations with vegetables as well. Even for someone as adventurous with food choices as me, I stopped in my tracks to think if I wanna try the really "weird" combos. However, I must say that what is on offer here is definitely very healthy! You'll really get bowled over by the amazingly numerous choices here. My friend who stays around here tells me that this stall has been here since he was a little kid. The lady taking the order uses different coloured tokens to remember what type of fruit/vege you want in your drink, which is rather creative.

After much consideration, I finally decided on the cabbage honeydew juice. The picture shown on the menu depicts a purple juice but mine turned out pinkish. But I did see purple cabbage added into the juicer. Guess it depends on how much purple cabbage and how purple it is to get a final purple colour in your juice huh? Interestingly, my juice tasted as if it's got lime juice in it - and not a sweet base I kinda expected. However, the juice was quite refreshing and still quite palatable. Well, I'll definitely come back to plough through all the other choices. What can I say, I just love to try interesting stuff. And hey, it's good for my health too tongue

The next adventurous choice? Perhaps the yakult dou miao juice or the pineapple chye sim juice?
