Yellow Cup Coffee has officially opened on 26th Jan, and it was a great honour to be part of their pre-opening launch!

 
Google "Yellow"and you will see that yellow is actually the colour of GOLD! It is the mission of this cafe's owners to let their customers enjoy a golden standard of coffee. Each cup is handmade on a La Marzocco Strada machine which has been dubbed the "Ferrari" of coffee machines! No picture of the coffee machine because you should go and see it for yourself! ^^;

 
Popular marvel heroes are plastered across the walls, granting the atmosphere of being in a downtown New York cafe. According to the boss, they're going to purchase more of such posters to fill the entire wall!

Lovin' all stuff yellow! Their staff is as trendy and quirky!
We had a free flow of coffee and pastry and I had a great time trying each and every one of the pastry!

 
From left to right lies the Apple Muffin, Chocolate Scone, Seaweed bread and orange peel muffin. The price ranges from SGD2.50 to SGD3.50. You can have fun trying all of these except the seaweed bread, which was a tad too oily and tasted quite plain. It felt like I was eating a piece of white bread with seaweed on it. sad

 
Slice through the orange muffin and you can see how moist the inner parts are. There are no flaky residues that would leave your plate messy and thus, it isn't a challenge to eat their desserts glamorously!

 
The Apple Crumble (SGD4.20) has a dust of icing sugar. The nutty crust holds a light-as-a-crowd pastry cream, and slices of apple are visible at the crown of the pastry. It was a lovely confectionary accompanying the coffee!

 
The snow pear danish (SGD4.20) is DEFINITELY my favourite. It's a great accompaniment with the coffee, delivering that perfect blend of pure indulgent pleasure. It has a fluffy crust with sweet-tasting caramelised pears to go along with it. It wasn't too sweet, but the puffiness of the danish is a go-to fix for the perfect dessert.

 
The chocolate croissant (SGD2.70) was a little too flaky, and it doesn't taste as good as the one you can buy at deliverance. I could hardly taste the chocolate because it has been overpowered by the strong flavour of the flaky bread! I wouldn't recommend this one.

 
The barista at Yellow Coffee also makes great latte art as well! You MUST try their coffee at Yellow Coffee, because their coffee machine is the 'ferrari' of all coffee machines. I'm a relatively experienced barista and a strong coffee-drinker, and as good as it sounds, their Yellow Coffee is indeed the most premium coffee I have tasted in Singapore.

 
Their coffee ranges from SGD5.70-SGD6.30. You may ask for decaffeinated drinks if you are sensitive to caffeine, and if you are health-conscious like me, do ask for low-fat (skimmed) milk as well at no additional costs.

 
Some of the latte art may be a bit abstract, like the one above. It actually showcases two swans, though I thought it looked like a leafy plant on the soil.

How's their service?
It may be bias to say that their service was great because I went for their pre-launch. However, the barista was really helpful and friendly. They make customised orders too... it was quite slow on that day but they had a LOT of orders and I really thought it was worth the wait.

What desserts should I order?
They actually have a full-day brunch but they're still experimenting with it. So just go ahead and try their brunch if you're a daredevil. On the other hand, I really recommend the snow pear danish. No matter what, don't forget to order a cup of coffee. The names and prices may be subjected to change!

How do I enjoy myself at the cafe?
People usually do cafe-hopping in a group or with friends, but I think Yellow Cup Coffee is a great place for you to read a book and drink a cup on your other hand. The staff is really friendly so I won't be surprised if they chat you up. Who knows you might make some new friends there?

I don't have to be in the area near Changi to drop by Guru's Banana Leaf anymore. The verdict is this: the food is so good that I am willing to travel from the west to the east for their delectable cuisine. On my virgin trip to this store, it was conveniently by chance because I was there after a trip to Pulau Ubin, and the food was extremely satisfactory after a long, exhausting day of hiking and cycling. I also do appreciate their friendly service in recommending the different choices that they offer, as well as patiently waiting while my dining partner and I contemplated over what food items to select.

 
The green banner usually symbolises that all food is Halal, so I'm glad that I can bond with my Muslim friends and indian nationals in this place.

 
The recently renovated store now includes a open-kitchen concept where you can appreciate the chef's prata-making process. There are indoor and outdoor seating, and you can smoke in a restricted area. I was a little shy to go up front to look at him make the food, so I pretended walking up and down to see how he prepared the food. Here's what we ordered:

 
Roti John - SGD5.00
The Roti John looked rather flat at first. The omellete sandwich included minced meat from both chicken and mutton. It also has slices of onion, lots of eggs, and a delectable spread of tomato-chilli sauce on a baguette-type loaf.

 
I must say that they did not go easy on the tomato-chilli sauce and the eggs, giving it a mouth full of flavourful sweetness and extreme spice. The meat was rather fresh and it didn't taste as fatty or oily as I thought it would be.

 
Garlic Naan - SGD1.50
I love Naans as it always taste less oiler than Roti Prata. The garlic naan sold in Guru's banana leaf was strong in its fragrance, and I love how parts of the Naan was crispy, while the other parts were fluffy. I really loved it!

 
Cheese Naan - SGD2.50
The cheese was evenly spread throughout the naan, though it did require some washing down of the throat. However, i wish that the cheese was more sticky in texture like the Mozzarella cheese found in pizzas. If you were to ask for my preference, I would recommend the Garlic Naan over the cheese naan because the cheese naan lacks crispiness.

 
Palak Paneer - SGD6.50
The thick curry sauce overwhelmed the base of the pureed spinach, and honestly, I would prefer so!

 
It also comes with chunks of cottage cheese that was delicious to taste. It was mild against the strong flavourful taste of the spinach-curry.

 
Here's one column of the menu to show you the wide variety of the food that they have. I felt that the food was delicious and it was sold at very reasonable prices.
If you're thinking of heading down today, here's some recommended tips for my fellow OpenRicers!

1. Don't sit in the interior of the shop as it may be rather warm.Try to avoid the outermost outdoor seating area as well at night, because there was a strong burning rubber smell which probably came from the main road.
2. Do drink lots of water if you are ordering the garlic naan to avoid embarrassing bad mouth odours.
3. Be prepared to google some items that you have not heard before. I am not well-versed in Indian cuisine, hence my dining partner and I were googling away the names of the items because of the lack of pictures.
4. The parking space is very limited. Try to take the public transport or park elsewhere because there was a traffic jam on the main road due to the queue of cars waiting to get into the carpark.

If you're looking for an authentic German culinary experience in Singapore, Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Cafe should be one of the top of your list. I had the opportunity to visit Stuttgart a few years back and had craved for the same dining experience ever since, and I'm happy to say that Stuttgart Blackforest Boutique S-Cafe has made its mark. I am so grateful for this joint-initiative by Between and OpenRice Singapore, enabling me to participate in this food-tasting session and relive those nostalgic Stuttgart memories. The cafe is strategically located near a busy traffic junction, but once ensconced within its cosy interior, one would be hard-pressed to notice the hustle and bustle of the busy street outside.

 
Step into the cafe and you will be in awe of the carefully-decorated dining area. The cafe has trees for pillars and partitions instead of your usual white-washed walls, imparting the impression of dining in the midst of a enchanted forest. There is also a wall of cuckoo houses and a wine vault located on the second floor. Strangely enough, the entire atmosphere is an exact replica of traditional German cafes.

 
I would say that the experience in the cafe was rather similar to what I had encountered in Germany. The German greeting "Guten Tag", which means 'hello', is splayed across the refrigerators, each containing many glass bottles of German beer. Instead of rambling on about the magnificent ambience, I shall bring your attention back to the food and beverages.

 
Cappuccino - SGD10.00
In all honesty, the cappuccino is not the highlight of the cafe. In fact, Germany is famous for its beer and not the coffee. The froth had too many bubbles in it and the coffee itself did not even fill half the cup. Being Singaporean, my first instinct was to look at whether there was any latte art. But no, the barista did not make any. Despite the underwhelming presentation, the aroma of the cappuccino was strong and it tasted creamy and smooth.

 
Peppermint Tea - SGD10.00
I really loved the Peppermint Tea which was flown in from Stuttgart. Bearing the Hochland brand name, it was extremely fragrant and rather light on the palate. I felt so relaxed after drinking it and had such a good night's sleep after the meal.

 
Wurstsalat - SGD18.00
This wurstsalad contains sausage slices with onions and gherkins. The sausage slices tasted more like ham, but the vegetables were really fresh! The cherry tomatoes were juicy and I thought that the gherkins gave a natural sourish flavour.

 
Schwäbische Maultaschen - SGD25.00
I really loved this dish of Swabian pasta with meat pockets, served with sautéed onions on the side. It reminded me of xiao long bao (Shanghai Dumplings), except that it is a larger version, uses beef and comes without any broth within. As the Swabian pasta was rather thick, it kept me from feeling hungry even hours later.

 
The beef was so tender and juicy and I think it's best to eat it plain, without any other sauces.

 
Spezialität Bratwurst - SGD25.00
Some of the OpenRicers also ordered the specialty sausages, which come with potato salad and sauerkraut. Beef, chicken or pork variants are available. According to them, the portion was not filling enough. I guess the Asian palate is not used to having sausages as a main meal.

 
Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte - SGD12.00
We also ordered a slice of their signature Blackforest cake. According to the menu, the cake is freshly baked and there are only limited servings per day. Although the type of alcohol it contains is not stated, I guess it is either rum or brandy.

 
The cake tasted fresh and there was little moisture. I love the chocolate crumbs and the sweetness that accompanied every bite. It was not overly sweet, and the cream added smoothness to the texture. The alcohol part was at the bottom of the cake, hence if you cannot take alcohol, you can easily remove the bottom layer.

 
Here are some tips for OpenRicers who are keen to visit the Cafe.
1. It is highly recommended that you bring along a camera because the cafe is really well-decorated. It is not necessary to bring any portable flash as the cafe is well-lit.

 
2. Do ask to be seated near the cashier or the kitchen as it is slightly difficult to get the attention of the staff if you sit in some obscure corner.
3. Be prepared to part with some extra cash as there is a pop-up store in the cafe where you can buy goods, such as their tea or their clocks which are flown from Germany.
4. Be patient as their service may not be up to standard. From our experience, they mixed up our orders but this may be due to the fact that were 9 of us, hence the large group may have caused some confusion.

Located in the furthest corner of Dempsey Hill, Roadhouse is indeed the place for people who desires a meal without fuss and stay in the restaurant till it closes. Under the PrivÉ Group branch, Roadhouse is the only modern American diner serving sinfully good American fare in Dempsey Hill. It is not unusual to see many Americans coming in for a coffee or dining in.

 
There are many different sets of menu which you can choose from, and you can find out more from the roadhouse main website.

 

 
The restaurant is very cozy and dimly lit, borrowing the natural sunlight to illuminate the restaurant. The strategic location does not make the view very glaring, but grants a heavenly and peaceful feeling as you dig into your meal.

 
Roadhouse also provides very good and friendly service. The servers there were very passionate in their jobs, making sure to attend to every customer's needs. Roadhouse is famous for The Terminator Challenge, which requires brave participants to wolf down a 1kg burger within 20 minutes. Upon accomplishment, the burger is free for the participant and their name and picture will be pasted up on the Wall of Fame.

 
Liquid Cheeseburger Fondue - SGD10.00
Minced beef, melted cheddar, tomatoes & scallions, served with bread biscuits.
The liquid cheeseburger is a must-try for cheese fanatics. You can dunk in the entire bread piece into the melted cheddar. It is great eating it both hot and cold, so you can have a relaxing chat with your dining partner instead of focusing on finishing up the nacho cheese. However, I could hardly taste the minced beef in the cheese fondue.

 
Mac N' Cheese Bolognaise - SGD20.00
Cheese sauce, rich beef bologanise, aged parmesan, Monterey Jack & garlic bread
One can only wonder what the cheese sauce is made up of, but I am pretty sure that there is mozzarella cheese in there as well. The Mac N' Cheese Bolognaise were sticky and chewy and is great for all cheese-lovers.

 
Be forewarned though, you have to exercise those carbs away because the base of the ceramic plate is drizzled with too much oil. Thankfully, you can easily shed the fats off because Roadhouse is, well, located on a 'hill' after all.

 
Simple Brie-Vine - SGD24.00
170g Josper-grilled Wagyu patty, grilled poached bear, brie, sundries tomatoes & wild rocket.

 
Served with fries & coleslaw, the Simple Brie-Vine is indeed divine. You can select how well you want your beef to be cooked, and they choose the freshest and finest ingredients for you. The fries are crisp and golden brown, and the coleslaw is sweet to taste! My friend lamented that the fries look bigger in portion than the burger though, as if to say that the highlight of the dish seems to be the fries instead.

 
Cut through the beef and you can tell that the chef is really experienced. The plate is nothing but a chopping board, which may be rather challenging to eat if you're a messy eater. Still, Roadhouse provides a casual experience for the foodies, and if you desire an eatery which provides the ambience, great service and good food, Roadhouse is the way to go.

My favourite Sushi restaurant Smile Dec 10, 2013

With JEM's latest haphazard events, our family decide to brave the storm and bring some business to JEM's Sushi Tei; hoping that the mall would be less crowded. Still, we spotted a queue outside and had to wait for several minutes before getting seated.

You can call up Sushi Tei to make a reservation and avoid peak hours from 6-8pm.

 
Sushi Tei's storefront is always easy to spot, with the title head made pure white and glaring, and yellowish ambience in the restaurant.

 
Free Flow Green Tea - SGD$2.50
In almost every Japanese restaurant, it is of their courtesy to serve Green Tea free flow. The service in Sushi Tei was excellent, they were quick to attend to our needs and explained to us whatever questions that we have, such as the different Japanese Words that we couldn't understand of the menu items.

Starter

 
Salmon Sashimi - SGD$6.00
For Starter, every salmon lover must try the freshest Sashimi that Sushi Tei serves. For about 5 pieces on a plate, this Salmon Sashimi comes with a slice of lemon for you to dabble on the Sashimi to give a slightly citrus and acidic taste. While I love to have my Sashimi plain, it was a good try to alter the taste a little, and to dip into the Japanese soya sauce to add extra flavour and get rid of the slight fishy smell for sensitive noses.

 
Agedashi Tofu - SGD$5.00
If you've read my review on Hill Top Japanese Restaurant, Agedashi Tofu in Sushi Tei is truly one of the best. The skin is covered thinly, with the tofu soft and tender. The fish flakes makes the tofu sweet, thus enhancing the flavour of the Agedashi Tofu instead of having it plain.

 
Basket of Fried Vegetables - $6.90
It is a trademark of Sushi Tei to deep-fry almost everything, especially vegetables in a thick batter. This basket of fried vegetables contain lady finger, carrots, sweet potato and brinjal. It was rather oily, but with the help of the nutrients from the vegetables, perhaps it may be a healthier option as compared to other deep fried snacks.

Main dishes

 
Cold Soba with Chicken Cutlet - SGD$13.00
Sushi Tei serves one of the best cold soba around. With frozen ice elevating the noodles, don't be fooled. This soba is actually a smaller portion because of the ice hidden below the green noodles. It has hardly any taste unless you dip it in soya sauce, and is served alongside with the fried chicken cutlet (Tonkatsu).

The chicken cutlet is fragrant, crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The knife work of the chef is excellent, as you can tell that the strips of each chicken slice is equidistance from each other.

 
Black Pork Ramen - SGD$15.00
The ramen wasn't the best, but they just made it. Although the noodles are not springy, and most probably not hand-made or home-made, it wasn't the highlight of the meal. In fact, the soup base was a little too salty, and there were too many spring onions in it that overpowered the taste of the thick pork. I felt really full after eating a few spoonful of it.

 
Tempura Udon - SGD$13.00
The Tempura Udon is my favourite. As of yet, no Japanese restaurant can beat Sushi Tei's udon, which has a little bounciness at the surface of each strand of udon, and the soup is slightly sweetened and a little salty. The seaweed is extremely fresh. Tempura Udon comes with two pieces of prawn.

The Tempura Prawn is battered with flaky crumbs and makes the prawn taste really good. Crispy on the outside, the prawn is really fresh and has a vibrant whitish-yellow colour. For people who hates the smell of prawns, they can always find Tempura prawn, which has no foul odour at all.

 
You'll be surprised that such a clear, plain-looking bowl of udon is actually packed with such powerful flavours. It is truly restaurant-quality and deserve each penny of yours!
