The skinny on skinny pizza Smile Sep 18, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Restaurant | Pasta | Kids-Friendly

The original thin crust pizza from Skinny Pizza at Wheelock has a decor slightly different from that of Raffles City (where it is way more cramped). This outlet has a more nydc feel, with tiled floors, wooden chairs and tables, and quirky decoration finishes all over the walls.

I loved the lights in this one ^ It really gives the place a jazzy feel!

Skinny Pizza offers a good range of Western cuisine, ranging from their signature pizzas to their pastas as well as sides (which include corn on the cob, truffle fries etc), and it's great to share so you should definitely bring friends along for this place.

We ordered a Squid Ink Pizza ($25), a Ginger Butter Chicken Pizza ($23) and a portion of Truffle Fries ($7) to share. There is a good mix of both fusion and western pizzas so there is something to suit everyone.

The Squid Ink Pizza is one of their signatures and is definitely a must-try. The base is completely black, and it has a nice refined taste different from the normal flour crust. It is topped with wild rocket, squid, prawns and just a splash of balsamic vinegar for that added flavour. This pizza has a surprisingly light taste -the freshness of the seafood is evident because of the minimal seasoning. Highly recommended.

The truffle fries portion was a little small for $7, and while I am not a fan of shoestring fries, truffle oil lovers will fangirl over this. You can smell the truffle oil even before the fries are right under your nose. The wafting scent is pure heaven for any truffle fries fan. The fries are served hot (a bit oily though), and really crispy (more crispy than fluffy in fact). I would like my fries a bit more potatoey though.

The Ginger Butter Chicken had a distinctive aroma of Indian curry spices. There were chicken chunks as well as fresh greens topping this crust. While it was undeniably tasty, I was a bit torn over deciding if this chicken resembled 'butter chicken' more or 'curry chicken'. It did not seem the possess the intense spiciness and heat of curry, nor did it have a particularly rich buttery flavour to speak out. A pity!

If you do head down to Skinny Pizza, we recommend you go for the Squid Ink Pasta and the Truffle Fries. The Aglio Olio also has a generous serving of seafood, so if you're craving some pasta you may wish to consider this. They also serve iced water, which is constantly refilled by the attentive staff smile

Chocolate is good for the soul Smile Sep 18, 2013

Categories : Desserts and Cakes | Ice Cream and Gelato

Awfully Chocolate at the star vista is quiet and furnished comfortably. I especially liked the high ceiling and the semi-industrial feel of the walls and the countertop. Here, you can get not only a rich chocolate fix, but also pig out on their famous hei ice cream, paired with coffee.

We went for the Salted Caramel Brownie ($7) and the double scoop hei ($8)

The salted caramel makes all the difference in this chewy brownie thats good down to the very last morsel. A tasty contrast of savoury and caramel, the gooey caramel complements the brownie. While the brownie is slighly flat, the chewy taste justifies its flatness. It's less fluffy than I would have liked but the texture went well with the caramel. This surprisingly wasn't too sweet for me, but I doubt i'll be able to finish off one brownie slice alone!

The famous hei ice cream is made from their very own dark chocolate. One scoop goes for $4.50 while 2 scoops are $8 so you should definitely grab a friend and share this. Two scoops are more than sufficient because the scoops are so generously dolloped! The ice cream isnt thick to the point where it borders on powdery, the distinct chocolateyness is there, and it has a quality which is rich and not too milky. I liked that it was slightly bitter smile However, you do get sick of the taste cos its so rich!

There is no service charge or GST, and ordering is at the counter. The chocolate creations here are definitely above average, and I would say that the hei ice cream is worth a try since someone like me (who never eats chocolate ice cream) liked this ice cream. My fav would still go to the brownie though! Salted caramel always goes well with chocolate.

Fish Soup Smile Sep 15, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

The fish soup stall facing the outside of this hawker centre is surprisingly, really tasty! For $4.50 (50c for rice but its just $4 for noodles), you get a hearty bowl of delicious fried fish in clear soup chockfull of greens!

The soup is clear and refreshing without leaving you thirsty at the end, it has fresh tomatoes and tofu (i would have liked more tofu in my fried fish soup though!) and 6 generous pieces of fish. The fish may not have been sliced really thickly but it's fresh and that's what's important. The batter of the fried fish isn't as tasty as I would have liked though -it could have done with a bit more seasoning for that extra oomph!

What I liked best, was how the generous serving of vegetables complemented everything. There's both lettuce and caixin in this, and they weren't overcooked! Delish!

This stall also offers fishball noodles and ba chor mee but really, go for the fried fish soup! Don't forget the cut chillis smile

Killiney OK Sep 12, 2013
Categories : Singaporean

Killiney Warung is a new addition to the Comfort Delgro building, serving up a small (but sufficient) variety of local and western cuisine, not to mention the standard toast+eggs and coffee combo! Prices are slightly expensive given that you can get cheaper eats at the nearby coffeeshops, but for the comfort and cleanliness, the extra $1 (or so) is worth it!

The interior is clean, comfortable and the seats are usually ample (even at lunchtime near noon!). The inside is also pretty windy so there's no concern over sweating buckets while enjoying that piping hot coffee and hor fun!

I ordered a Fried Rice w Sunny Side Up ($3.80) and a Ice Coffee (w Milk) for $2.20

While the fried rice is mediocre at best, with strips of carrot, peas and egg in it, the sambal is really TO DIE FOR. Believe me when I say this, but the sambal transforms the fried rice from a 2.2/5 to a 3.5/5! The aroma of the chilli is so remarkable, it has a robust fragrance coupled with good substance and texture. It's slightly tangy and has a trace of onion and dried shrimp in it. Delicious.

The iced coffee is really worth your $2.20 in my opinion. The milk to coffee ratio is just nice, it isn't too sweet (but people who enjoy the strong coffee taste might want to request cutting back on the sugar!) and it definitely gives you that caffeine pick me up that you deserve. Local coffee has a much stronger taste than western coffee though, so people who arent used to the taste might find it a bit strong.

The service here is also pretty good, you order at a counter, collect a number tag and place it at your table while you wait. Your number will be called and you can pick up your food from a separate window/counter (either that or the staff will bring it to your table). The staff is super friendly and they even said "thank you" and "bye" to me as I was leaving, which I thought was a really nice touch given that there were a number of other customers they had to serve. smile It's the little things that make you smile.

Tze Char @ Verdun Smile Sep 12, 2013
Categories : Coffeeshop | Seafood | Zi Char

Verdun House does have its own fair share of gems (together with the cluster of Jalan Besar eateries!) with Mei Xiang Seafood (or Bee Hiang) Tze Char. The coffee shop here is your standard, dusty by-the-roadside coffeeshop with plastic tables and chairs but we promise you, the food is something worth your every penny.

We ordered their special Herbal Chicken ($24) -this is one of the signatures, Oyster Omelette ($8) and a fried Heng Cai (hokkien for spinach but these are of the Indian variety) w garlic for $6. Rice goes for 50c a plate!

The vegetable is my favourite -the leaves are still green and crisp even though it's really easy to overcook spinach. There aroma of the oyster sauce and savouriness of the dish is just right. it has a slight tinge of smokiness or wok hei which makes this dish so terribly addictive. The simplicity of the flavours yet the crispness of the vegetable makes this an instant win.

The oyster omelette had spring onion and chilli inside, which was a nice touch because it added fragrance to the dish. This omelette is probably one of the less-oily variations of this dish that you'll find at a tze char stall. We did like that it wasn't overly oily and the egg was fluffy too -one drawback was that there was very little oysters and the oysters were slightly overcooked.

The thing about the herbal chicken is that the gravy is really thick and to die for. While it doesnt have the heatiness of the ginger, it does have a slightly herbal quality to it. I would have liked the gravy less starchy and more herbal, but for those who aren't accustomed/do not particularly fancy the herbal aroma, you'll enjoy this. The chicken has ample meat and the thigh meat is just so wonderfully tender. The chicken is literally sweet from the stew!

Service is not particularly fantastic, the ambience is chill and has a super laidback feel with tables piled with food and beer bottles. This tze char place makes for a perfect chill gathering with friends over reasonably priced food in the Farrer Park area (it's just across City Square Mall!) It has a quality that really reminds you of Bangkok eateries and the nightlife whirs by as you sit back with good food and company.
