Chocolate Earl Grey

Yes, you heard me. It's Chocolate Earl Grey Tea. We know chocolate pairs well with milk or coffee, creating this rich and creamy flavour together, so how does chocolate taste with earl grey tea without the milk and sugar? While the combination may sound weird it actually turned out amazing! On each sip, you would first taste the fragrance of the chocolate with would be accompanied by the fragrance of the earl grey that lingers in your mouth. The chocolate and earl grey complemented each other really well without giving your taste buds too much of a shock.

Chestnut Crepe

When the freshly made crepe was served, we could smell the light fragrance of the eggs which filled our mouths as we chewed on it. To put it simply, it's 越嚼越香. However, while I enjoyed the crepe, I could not say so for the chestnut filling. as it was definitely too sweet for my liking. The filling was smooth and somehow, I felt that the filling had a hint of coconut. While the hint of coconut fragrance complemented the crepe well, the chestnut filling overwhelmed the crepe. Complicated it may sound, but I guess you have experience it for yourself. The cream on the top, I felt was the cream of the crop. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it's rich yet light flavour bought me over. It also managed to neutralize the sweetness of the chestnut filling by a little. I would enjoy the crepe best with the plain crepe and the cream itself. Overall, this was s pleasant dessert although I wished they had been more stingy with the sugar.

The service staff were also very attentive. Overall, a delightful find! smile

Categories : Korean | Restaurant | Korean BBQ

Decided to give this Korean restaurant a visit since I was around the vicinity for tea. I have heard many raves of the food there and heard of the queue that would form outside the restaurant during dinner time, but surprisingly, when I passed by the place at 615 and 645 respectively, there was no queue. I guessed they had opened a few branches to meet with the demand, thus explaining the no queue situation. As usual (like what we always do when we dine at Korean restaurants), we ordered bulgogi, namely the beef and pork bulgogi set.

The side dishes were served shortly. I was amazed by the number of side dishes but I guess quantity doesn't mean quality. The cabbage kimchi was just cabbage in chilli powder and the cabbage was very yellowish and brownish, unlike what the other restaurant served. It wasn't as flavourful nor as crispy as the one I usually have. It looked like some kimchi that u get at Korean food stalls in food courts.

Beef Bulgogi. The beef was tough and dry. It wasn't marinated so it was tasteless. The sauce for the beef bulgogi lacked sweetness although they had onions and leeks. I guessed it was because the onions wasn't cooked so the sweetness of it was not brought out to complement the beef. Very disappointing because I have had better beef bulgogi in Serangoon Gardens.

Pork Bulgogi. The pork was slightly better than the beef but still tough. I dun remember having such tough meats elsewhere. I think because of the difference in sauce, the pork bulgogi was sweeter. But nothing spectacular nor memorable.

Overall, it was a very very disappointing experience at Kim's Family Restaurant. It was famed and credited for it's authentic and great Korean food, but I guess, maybe they are not that great after all given the fact that that they couldn't even manage a basic korean dish like the bulgogi. There are certainly many better Korean restaurants out there, so I really think it's time for them to up their standards.

The Art of Fine Dining Smile Sep 03, 2013

Not my first visit there but I always head there when I want to pamper myself. I dun like crowds and noises, so I like the ambience and environment of the place because it was very peaceful and quiet. Although it is a student-run restaurant, I was always impressed by the great food and awesome service. The students were very attentive and every detail was taken note of. I like it that they warmed the bread before serving it. Always go there for their entrees and soups because you wont be disappointed. Give their desserts a miss though because something is just missing.

I had the vegetable chowder when I went there recently and I really enjoyed it. It wasn't so rich that gets you sick after awhile. It was balanced by the sweetness of the vegetables and the bits of peppers. As for mains, we had the roast chicken and seabass.

The chicken was tender and flavourful while the seabass was juicy and succulent.

At $25++ per pax for their 3 course set dinner comprising of appetizer, entrée and dessert, it is really the cheapest fine dining place you can find. Not forgetting the support you would be giving the students by visiting Recipes!
