Fried Chicken Set Smile May 01, 2014

Pasir Ris MRT Station is one of the stations with easy access to shopping malls. White Sands Shopping Centre is located directly in front of the station. In my opinion...this mall is the most convenient place for those with banking needs from POSB & OCBC. Both banks' outlet were located in the mall & they open daily till 7pm. There is also a library located in the mall (which is the main reason I hopped over to this district). When I'm hungry for food, Kopitiam food court is my usual choice. I've built up a list of favorite food here.
lol

There was a major renovation last year & most of the stalls here had removed their stall's name, same as this Western Food stall.

I was tempted to order the "Value Meal for 2" as it was really, really value for money...2 mains, 2 soup, 2 garlic bread & 4 jelly - all for only $10.90!!!
Alas! I'm alone today, so perhaps next time...
sad

I ordered the Fried Chicken ($5.90) & topped up $1 for a bowl of soup with garlic bread...
Fried Chicken ($5.90) + Soup & Garlic Bread ($1)

Fried Chicken ($5.90) + Soup & Garlic Bread ($1)

The lady cut opened a fresh packet of frozen string-fries & a plastic bag of marinated chicken meat pieces from the fridge. She put both into the electric deep fryer (next to the serving counter). She also placed the garlic bread into the toaster at the food preparation counter. Then she started to scoop the side dishes onto a plate.
Talk about ala-minute...
tongue

My humble opinion:
- the cream corn soup was flavorful & the corn kernels inside the were fresh, not canned...
- the garlic bread (more like toast) were crispy, too...the herbal butter were fragrant with a hint of rosemary...nice...
- the fries were done jut right, crispy & not oily (unlike other stalls). I didn't even need to add any salt...
- the veggies in the coleslaw was crunchy & the mayo was not overpowering...
- the bake beans was nice & not mushy...
- there were 3 thick pieces of tomato & 2 pieces of cucumber (some stalls only gave 1 each)...
- the bite-size fried chicken pieces was well marinated & not too salty. The meat were crispy outside, tender & juicy inside...mmm...very nice...
smile

I was rather surprised of their generosity to allow self-service on all types of sauces, mayo (or was it tartar) &...this surprised me most, a shaker can of dried herbs - basil leaves with a hint of rosemary!
shocked

Verdict: chopstick chopstick chopstick

I don't know about you...but any cook who took care to have a shaker of dried herbs...will definitely deserved a come-back from me to try their other dishes.
smile

PS: there's a 10% discount with the Kopitiam Card.

Fresh Fruits! Smile Apr 27, 2014
Categories : Juices

We came here to send in our laptop for repair & were really thirsty after a long drive. As we walked towards the lift landings, we passed by this store. It has a very interesting name...The Fruit Market. I couldn't make it out at first...just by looking at the storefront.

I'm just very delighted to see fresh fruits & fruit juicies amidst the concrete jungle in this area. Fruits make best snacks & most healthiest supplement ever when eaten fresh!
Fresh Whole Fruits

Yay! Fresh Fruits...in a godforsaken business district.
tongue

Super thirsty for fruit juices, fresh cut fruits or just anything cold & refreshing...it's so difficult to get fruits when you're eating outside. Not all eatery/coffee shops/foodcourts have fruit stalls.
Cut fruits are so convenient, not to mention delicious & healthy...especially refreshing when they're icy cold!

Fresh Cut Fruits

Fruits to go...is just as yummy!
lol

There were 5 types of fruits in this cup...pineapple, honey dew, watermelon, papaya & cantaloupe. Plum powder & fine salt are available at the counter. Each cup is only $2.
What a steal...

All kept icy-cold in a refrigerator in store. The fruits were very individually fresh, crunchy & sweet, unlike those sold in some stores...which had a mixed taste of the different pieces of the fruits together on each piece.

Curry Yong Tau Foo Smile Apr 16, 2014
Categories : Coffeeshop

The first time we visited this stall was 2 years ago. All their dishes were sold at $2.80 when other coffee shop stalls were already selling their noodle dishes at $3.50-$4.00!
Since then, we always patronize this stall whenever we were in the vicinity.
smile

The stall owners were middle-aged Cantonese. They were very warm & friendly. The man can communicate in Mandarin but the lady can only speak Cantonese. She remembered my special preference of "粿条米粉虾汤, 豆芽多" (kuay-tiao bee-hoon prawn soup with more bean sprouts) even when it was weeks away from my previous visit! Both of them have very nice, sincere smiles…as if they were cooking food for family members.
smile

Today's visit was almost 4 months apart from my last. She was still as friendly as ever, calling me "阿姐" (sis - in Cantonese, of course)…apologizing that they've changed to self-service (although she still serves the food to the elderly personally); introducing all the noodle types available; cautioning that the food is piping hot & to be careful etc…
smile

The Curry Yong Tau Foo ($4.00) looked very delicious. So I made a bold decision to try it out as breakfast. It was surprisingly very nice!
It tasted like our favorite dish cooked by my mother-in-law.  She was very generous with the curry gravy. The spiciness was just right for me & it was not salty…exactly the mild taste that I had preferred (a healthier personal choice). The curry was really piping hot but you can still taste a hint of lemongrass. The spice residue was nowhere to be seen (perhaps she had filtered it), so there was no fuss slurping up the curry gravy. Nice…
(PS: I finished every drop of the curry!)
tongue

I saw that she was also very thoughtful to have cut the big pieces of the firm, fish-paste filled tofu, gravy-soaked taugua & crispy taukee into bite size pieces. The brinjal were soft & tender while the bean sprouts were fresh & crunchy. I opted for the coase bee hoon. It was slightly more 'slender' & she cut them shorter then those selling outside…the al-dente texture was perfect for this soupy dish. I had no trouble fitting them into the soup spoon at all…unlike the others.

Verdict: chopstickchopstickchopstick

I really appreciated their sincere passion towards cooking good food & their thoughtfulness towards their customers. Hope they continue that way for as long as possible.

Ice Milo ($0.80) Smile Apr 09, 2014

Categories : Food Court

With the inflation everywhere, there will probably not be another stall selling at this price!
Not only was the glass bigger than those selling elsewhere, their drinks were flavorful, too.
Price List

This stall sells the Ice Milo ala minute. There were no stacks of cups with the pre-scooped Milo powder at the sides. Certainly, also not the premixed type that was poured into the vending machine. The stall assistance made the drink just like how we make it at home.
It was really icy cold!
Very nice...

I was very surprised that it only costs 80 cents!
I was told that some schools...& even Army camps don't even sell that cheap anymore...

I sincerely hope that this place will continue to maintain the price & the quality.

Fermented Pineapple Smile Apr 06, 2014   (Related Review)

Categories : Bakery

What is Fermented Pineapple?
Is it when you left the cut pineapple in the fridge for days that bubbles started to form on the syrup & the fruit began to taste almost wine-like? shocked
Does the name of this bread suggests that the pineapple has been fermented (as mentioned) before baking into the bread? Nah...maybe not...
smile

My humble opinion:
Ripe pineapple is sweet, low in calories & full of vitamins. Nobody would ever overeat pineapple because of the acidic nature. It enhances the monotonous flavor of any food, like cookies, tarts, cocktails & even our uniquely Singaporean dish, Rojak!
What is Rojak without pineapple?!  lol

Fermented Pineapple 酒醸风梨 ($4.80)

Fermented Pineapple 酒醸风梨 ($4.80)

This is the first time that I tasted bread filled with loads of pineapple & walnuts inside.
smile

The bread is fluffy but it is also firm enough to hold the many chunky pieces of fruits & nuts & prevented them from sinking to the bottom. The pineapple tasted sweet (as if candied) & juicy while the walnut adds crunch...this combination creates an interesting texture to the soft loaf. Making every bite very enticing & anticipating. It kept me wishing the next bite has both the pineapple & the walnut.
tongue

Verdict: chopstick chopstick chopstick

PS: Just found out that they had added red wine. No wonder the pineapple is reddish!

Mmm...Nice...Very nice...
