Chinatown Sun Seng Gourmets' Corner ( Chinatown )
I wonder why it took me so long to find this gem. It is at a deserted part of smith street market, same section as the famous Ikan Bilis Yong Tau Food. I was drawn to the smell of fish soup and fried hor fun. When i saw the fire that erupted from the wok while the uncle was frying the hor fun, I knew that this will be good! I know this will certainly achieve the wok hei taste that is unfortunately absent in most hor fun these days. Anyway I order the bittergourd silce fish hor fun. It was certainly a deliciously addictive meal! Will be back to try the other dishes. I wish all hor fun sellers will fry their hor fun on the spot, like this stall, instead of just scooping from a bucket of pre-fried hor fun

and pouring gravy over it.

Surprising good

nydc ( Novena )

Okay I have to admit that i have no expectations of NYDC, been there a couple of times and thought the food wasnt fantastic. Anyway decided to try it out again as they had an one-for-one offer for main course.

Ordered the medium rare steak and it was as how i like it, medium rare... some places overdo the 'rare' and it becomes overcooked... so I am glad NYDC managed to up the steak pretty nicely.

French fries came out crispy and hot, so another plus point~
Overall a good and value for money experience. Paid about $12 each after discount.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine ( Newton )

Chui Huey Lim revisited again! This is I think the 5th time I am here since its opening beginning of this year. Two reasons whiy i kept coming back. Firstly good food, secondly i had 3 or was it 4 return vouchers after my first visit. My favourite dish of the day was the char kway teow with cockles. It was marvellous. Not too sweet, moist, oily, generous in the amount of cockles. Fattening. Kaleidoscope of wonderful flavours. The dish i like the least was the prawn ball. I felt it was a little blend, not much taste of prawn or anything thing.

The first dish was a plate of goose with braised toufu. $24. My lunch company love the goose but i felt it was too 'gamey' the ducky taste was a little too strong.

The second dish prawn balls. - $12.

Char Kway Teow if i didnt remember wrong was $14! Lovely!

Mixed braised vegetables with scallops, fatt choy. Pretty good too! I think this was $28

Finally the oyster omelette. Which i must say was wonderfully executed. Good balance of oyster, eggs and the gooey stuff. Cant remember the price of this dish.

Total damage was $105. Had a $50 voucher though which was wonderful =D

Delicious!

Jin Hua Fish Head Bee Hoon ( Raffles Place )
Very delicious bowl of milky fish slice bee hoon! I love the texture of the noodles. It is not the usually thick ones that you find in most fish head bee hoon stall, it is slightly thinner, not too soft, cooked al-dente. I prefer this thinner version as it is not as slipperly, easier to consume! The flish slices are pretty thick and plentiful for a $4 bowl. The best part of this wonderful bowl is the mouth-watering soup. Thick, milky and very tasty with bits of fried shallots and ti poh - fried sole fish. Craving for it again!

Kenny Rogers Roasters ( Novena )
After feeding on kenny rogers for many years, this is the first time i am writing a review for the restaurant. One word summaries my experience of the many restaurants dotted around our little island. "Inconsistent". Well i guess inconsistent is better than terrible right, so at times it is not too bad. Anyway the experience here was bad. Chicken was served cold, the skin was stripped off the chicken. The thigh was dry and tasteless. One might have mistaken it for chicken breast if you ate with a blindfold. The best part of the meal unfortunately has never been the chicken but the baked beans. I love kenny rogers baked beans, not sure what goes in the sauce, but it sure is different from the usual beans, very tasty, not too salty. In fact it goes well with the muffins. Okay i know it is gross, but really both actually is a strange complement of each other. Usually i would have 2 servings ofe baked beans but for the first time i decided to go with the chicken vegetable soup, it was alright. Ironically the worse part of the meal is the chicken!

delicious n large variety of salmon
Smile 2012-08-21

Chiso Zanmai ( Clarke Quay )

The buffet spread was pretty good, they have the typical japanese food spread, many varieties of salmon as you can see from the photos. Many different variations of salmon sashimi. Unfortunately my buffet strategy was left in disarray when i polish up this plate of salmon. I felt a little sick after the many slices of salmon. Moral of the story, eat salmon in moderation, no matter how much you love the little red fish. Besides raw salmon, they had grilled salmon head, salmon porridge, salmon miso soup. Omega 3 overload it what you get here. For dinner we paid about $35 in total excluding drinks. If you are into desserts, the dessert spread was however very disappointing.

not so good
Cries 2012-08-21

Gurney Drive ( Changi )
Had groupon vouchers for gurney drive/culture, so here we are. Difference between gurney culture and gurney drive is that the former is halal unlike the latter. We had the penang laksa which unfortunately came out luke warm. Would have preferred it serve hot. There was not enough sardines in the penang laksa, which was a pity. The prawn noodles was also mediocre, i thought the taste of the yellow noodles was too pungent, too alkaline. Again the noodles was served lukewarm. Char kway teow was okay, not fantastic, just edible. The other side dishes we ordered were penang rojak, chicken ngoh hiang and kang kong cuttlefish. The rojak was probably the redeeming factor of the dinner, the rest were all poorly executed.

Heng Loong ( Bukit Timah (Postal Code:28) )
Carrot cake was smooth and soft, seems home-made unlike what you get when you procure from the factory. Unfortunately the carrot cake was not thoroughly fried, maybe the cook was stressed by my hovering presence and when i asked is my carrot cake ready, he served it to me immediately while continuing to fry the rest. Overall pretty good plate of black carrot cake. Not too sweet, just nice.

Good groupon deal!
Smile 2012-08-10

The Tastings Room ( City Hall )
Had a pleasant National day dinner courtesy of the groupon voucher that I purchased. It was a 4 course truffle themed set dinner.

Starter: White truffle fries for 2: I love that it came out piping hot and crispy. Nice hint of truffle oil with every bite.

Truffle Mushroom Puree Soup: Thick and creamy, topped with truffle foam. It has quite a substantial amount of sautee mushroom added into the soup. Wonderful texture.

Pardon the topsy turvy order of photographs
Dessesrt: Cheese cake: I thought it was too light and 'moosey' but my friend loves it.

Truffle cream Linguine: I had 2 bites from my friend's order. I thought was pretty good. Love the texture of the mushroom, it was a little QQ. Nice and creamy. A little jerlat towards the end though. Nevertheless fragrant.

Rose Sauce Linguine with Parma Ham: This was my order. I love the sous vide egg that was on top the pasta. I broke my egg yolk and I love how the egg yolk compliments the dish. The thin slices of parma ham was also lovely together with the pasta.

Overall a pleasant dining experience. My apologies for the reddish photos though. The whole place was in dim red lighting.

Simply delicious and sinful

Zhen Zhong Sin Hoe Kee Hong Kong Noodles ( Chinatown )
Saw the queue forming when i was there at 7am for my National Day Breakfast. Wanted to eat the usual ikan bilis yong tau food but this looks too tempting. When the lady handed me my plate of soya sauce chicken noodles, I have no regrets eating this instead of the ikan bilis yong tau food. It not only looks good but taste wonderful. The chicken is very fragrant and cooked to tender perfection. Still pretty bloody at some parts but thats the way i like it. Marvellous. Very what we teo chew call it 'pang' (frangrant).

Be warned though it is fatty, the noodles is served with lard, which explains why the noodles is so smooth and delicious. Certainly wonderful.

On a side note, the service was horrible. The lady was fierce. When I tried telling her i want the drumstick noodles, she scolded me and said I cant have it. I was puzzled but realised later that she misunderstood my not too-good mandarin. Anyway she keep mumbling under her breath in cantonese cursing me for this and that...
uh well....nevertheless I will be back!

Good, affordable and generous
Smile 2012-08-10

Yayoiken ( Clarke Quay )
Chanced upon this one day was curious as it seems new. First impression: I thought the menu seems pretty affordable and there was a crowd in the restaurant so I guess it must be not bad. Decided that i must go back.
So anyway this is what i had when i went to restaurant. Was so famished that I didnt pay attention to the names of the dishes.
This was my very porky dish. Very good and generous amount of pork belly, swipe it to and fro, dip it in raw egg and it becomes excellent! My only grouse was that the sauce was a little too sweet! Quite jerlat at the end of the meal but well... I dont mind the portion! Ha! This dish was slightly more expensive compared to the rest at $19.90.

This is how the entire set looks like

My friend's dish. Fried prawns, beef and chicken or was it pork cutlet. Pretty good and generous too at $12.90.

Heaven is a place on Earth at Tomi
Smile 2012-08-08

Tomi Sushi ( Novena )
This is very good! very very good! The sushi was very fresh. I guess this is what meals in heaven would be like. The sushi platter cost $59. Our total bill came up to $80 per person as we ordered additional dishes such as the grilled sardines and 2 pieces of salmon belly sushi.

The best amongst the best.. was the Uni. Very fresh, creamy and trust me the taste of good Uni is beyond description. The Ootoro ranks closely in second place. It is the fattiest part of the tuna. Every bite literally sends you to and fro to heaven with the fatty tuna oil bursting in you mouth. Simply delicious.

Anyway some photos for your enjoyment: Happy eyes feasting

Chili but not spicy
Just OK 2012-08-03

Chung Cheng ( Beach Road )

Read about the chili mee from one of the blogs out there. Thought it was a pretty interesting idea for chili loving Singaporeans. I went with high expectations of sedap chili, unfortunately I was a little disappointed. The chili lacks the OOmpH factor. It certainly was not spicy enought and not fragrant. Would have preferred if it was fried thoroughly with garlic and shallots. It is not horrible but well.. not fantastic either.

Nakhon Kitchen ( Hougang )

When the cravings kick in, I just got to have it. Yes, here i am again at nakhon because i was yet again craving for tom yum. Was deciding between having the tom yum kway teow or tom yum soup without the kway teow. In the end, i settled for the tom yum soup because i really wanted more of soup than anything else. I realy love nakhon tom yum soup because its spiciness is just right. Most places just arent spicy enough or if they are spicy, they are way too spicy. And spice is all they have in the taste. Unlike nakhon, despite being spicy, it is still so full of flavour. Flavour of the lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves. This is ohhhh sooo good!

Good but overrated
Just OK 2012-08-03

Hougang 6 Miles Famous Muah Chee ( Hougang )

Before I start with my review, one important to note is that this stall has since March 2012 moved to Bedok South Blk 69, #01-468. Had this a couple of times when it was at its previous location in Hougang and in its present location in Bedok South. The muah chee is no doubt pretty good, but it is overrated. Yes I know it is one of the very very few hand made muah chee left in Singapore, but seriously, hand made and machine made... hmm i cant really tell the difference. Either way, I love my muah chee! Oh one thing special about the muah chee is that besides the orginal flavour that you see in this photo, it comes with a black seseame flavour too. The other thing to note is that this muah chee is not cheap. Pretty expensive compared to the ones you wld find in the pasar malam.
