How do you Make Wine?
2011-11-15
Wine is one of the oldest social drinks in the world. It’s been proven through artifact findings in Iran and Armenia that man has been making it for over 8,000 years. Until now, it is still a popular drink in many social functions, events, as well as simple get-togethers. Aside from its strong and fruity taste, the wine contains alcohol content which can help you relax and let loose. Most of you would know that wines are primarily made from grapes. In the early days, harvesters would collect the good quality grapes from the vineyard and would put them in a barrel. Then, they would trample on these fruits barefoot until they squeeze the juice from each grape. Nowadays, grape stomping (usually in Europe) is only done to commemorate the ancient technique of making wine. Aside from it being unhygienic, it also takes up too much time and effort. Though most wine makers still prefer to harvest grapes manually, they now rely heavily on mechanical crushers to squeeze them. Once done, the liquid is stored into tanks where it is stored for about 2 weeks. Just like making beer, yeast is also added to begin fermentation. During this process, the yeast eats the sugar to produce the alcohol content. To lessen the acid content in wine, a secondary fermentation is needed. This also determines the type of wine makers will make. For red wine, they are stored inside an oak barrel for weeks or even months to allow it to mature. As for champagnes, Carbon Dioxide is kept in the liquid. This produces the bubbles, which have made this drink very popular until the present time. It looks like wines are here to stay. Until today, many variants are still being concocted by wine makers. And, it’s not grapes which can be used to produce this drink. Other fruits are also being fermented to give drinkers more options.
