My friends and I have become frequent customers of Ah Loy Thai as we absolutely love their food. It is one of the best thai food restaurants I have come across, at affordable prices and great servings of food. The butter calamari is a must-order everytime I visit Ah Loy Thai - very addictive and well marinated squid rings which are deep fried till crispy. Tried the garlic chicken this time round - was also good, spices went well with the fried chicken, and it was not too salty.

I am now a fan of Ah Loy Thai, they have, in my opinion, the most delicious and value for money thai food. I always aim to try new dishes on every visit. The butter calamari is a must-try - fried till crispy, the sauce is simply heavenly. Tried the tom yum soup for the first time, was average, but the amount of seafood is quite a lot. The honey chicken was also good. Lastly, the fried fish is very tasty, fish was fresh and meat tender, sauce complements the fish well.

I'm a frequent (probably) customer of this Thai cafe / restaurant, going there on average of once per month. Always ordered the fried kang kong AND butter calamari. No butter calamari, I am not eating there. The butter calamari is a must-try if you are a fan of butter crabs. Deep fried, crispy with a satisfying drip of butter and chilli. The pad thai is not too bad (about 6 dollars) so good for lunch.

Friend introduced me to Ah Loy Thai at Shaw Tower. Tried the fried fish (about $14) - was very crispy and flavourful, we gobbled up the whole fish to its bones; also tried the mango chicken (about $8) - it's not oily at all and the meat wasn't fatty, well marinated. Overall a value-for-money place to satisfy your craving for thai food, they do not charge service charge, and all dishes are reasonably priced.

Tom Yam Prawn Soup

My favorite is the phat thai and thai milk red tea, but I'm just disappointed that they do not allow special orders(can't order Phat Thai w/out beansprout) during peak hour. I had to spend 10min trying to make sure all the beansprout was taken out before eating. Their Tom Yum Soup was quite good, prawn was big and the price is reasonable as it can be shared among two person, just order additional rice along

Staffs not really friendly and you have to queue to pay and sometimes the food come after very long time, during peak hours, maybe some stuffs are out of stock even. I suggest to for lunch or early dinner there.

Ah Loy Thai is located in Shaw Towers. This post will cover the food that I ate on three different occasions.

Visited Ah Loy Thai on a saturday for dinner. It was around 6pm and yet there was already a long queue that stretched down the stairs to where the male toilet is. Notice the white long sleeve shirt man whose image is not clear and back is facing us? Well he is the guy who ensures that patrons queue up and assign them to the tables. So you will not want to offend him.

Ah Loy Thai has expanded and taken a unit next to it to cater to the crowd. As a result, their seating capacity has increased around 100%! But my concern will is that the owners increased the seating capacity without increasing kitchen size. How will it cope with serving customers their food and not result in an increase in waiting time? As mentioned in my first post, the waiting time for food was around 40minutes.

While we were queuing up, we were given a pencil and this slip of paper with all the dishes and prices. We waited close to 20 minutes and had lots of time to decide what to eat.

At last, we had a place to sit. All the way at the back at a cozy corner. Having decided what to order, I went to the cashier and made the payment for my orders with the slip of paper before going to my seat. It will be a 45 minutes wait, that was what the cashier told me.

Luckily for us, we waited just around 30 minutes. The first dish that was served was the Thai Pandan Chicken. The Pandan Chicken wrapped in pandan leaves was tender, juicy, tasty and well-marinated. The pandan leaves seems to have helped trap and ensure that all the moisture and flavours did not eascape. In addition, pandan flavours were present in the chicken. The chicken were cooked till it was slightly charred. Shiok, delicious! The only down side was, it was oily. Well, for delicious food its worth it.

Having tried the Phad Thai previously, I ordered it again. Phad Thai is the thailand version of fried kway teow. It is fried with prawns, toufu, fried egg and bean sprouts. Accompanied with grinned peanut and lime. The dish was fragrance and tasty! Certainty better than most places.

Ah Loy Thai’s Tom Yum Soup looks fiery red with the chilli oil on top. It came with prawns, mushrooms (straw and oyster) and squids. It is a spicy yet sour soup that was balanced nicely such that despite the spiciness (numbing your tongue/sweating), you would find yourself going for more servings. We ordered a bowl of rice to accompany the soup.

On the two other occasions , this was what I ate.

To be honest, I was very disappointed when I saw the Pineapple Fried Rice. So different from what I expected, no Chinese sausages, no floss, no cashew nuts and there was very few pieces of pineapples! But omg the moment I ate one mouthful I could not stop. This dish looks so simple and unlike other pineapple fried rice was amazingly delicious! Ingredients include prawns (which were not fresh), chicken, raisins, pineapples (very few pieces) and egg. Sounds like a negative dish? Well, amazingly the chef combined the ingredient and his skills... to cook up a fried rice that was not dry nor hard nor oily. In addition, the killer punch was the amazing wok-hei flavour presence combined with everything else was just heavenly! Certainty, a dish to try! Shiokolicious!

The Fried Butter Calamari was delicious. Despite a wet look due to the butter, each piece of calamari was still crispy. Great seasoning, very tasty.

If you love very spicy food. The Stired Fried Red Basil Leaf with Pork is for you. The chilli bits in it had me chocking literally. The spiciness overwhelmed the rest of the flavours. Have your drink on standby!

Fried with chilli and garlic. The Fried Sweet Potato Leaf was an average dish. This time, the taste of the spices was not overwhelming.

Overall, despite the wait time, the food is too good to forgo. After all these visits, the must try items are Thai Pandan Chicken, Phad Thai, Pineapple Fired Rice. If your stomach has space for more food, order Tom Yum Soup and Fried Butter Calamari. Ah Loy Thai is certainty a must try, its Thai food taste great! But do come early if you are planning a dinner as Ah Loy Thai closes at 815pm on weekdays and 715 on weekends.

(I saw several tables having a similar fish dish. Any idea what is their signature fish dish?)

After your meal, you can hop over to Tom’s Palette just opposite Ah Loy Thai for ice cream.

On a random Saturday afternoon, we decided to head to Ah Loy Thai. My friend had recommended me to try out as they are famous for Thai food, so we decided to head there for our today's lunch. We arrived with an empty stomach, famished and astonished to find ourselves in a queue and all the tables were fully packed in the 2 shops which this restaurant occupied.

While waiting in the queue, I decided to surf OpenRicers reviews to see what are the special or yummy dishes from this restaurant & had shortlisted 4 dishes from the 20 reviews that I had read. They are the glass noodle, Pineapple fried rice, pandan chicken and tom yum soup. Hence we placed order for this 4 dishes while we are still waiting for our seats. Luckily we only waited for 20 minutes as the owner skipped the huge group of 6 people before me and instead ushered the both of us to our seats first.

The restaurant decoration has a very Thai feel to it, with the walls decorated with famous Thai people and also there were a couple of certificates hanging proudly on their wall. I guessed the owner must have received a lot of recognition in the culinary world when he was younger.

Well, a good thing is there is no GST or service charge for this restaurant. But I have to place my order and made payment at the cashier first before they serve your food. I felt that the price of each dish was pretty reasonable. Here's the receipt for my lunch:

Wow... The Seafood Tom Yum soup was simply awesome and mind-blowing. Very yummy!!! Very aromatic!!! And the taste of the Tom Yum is simply delicious. The soup had a nice balance of sour taste & spiciness. Not forgetting the generous serving of prawns in this dish and also the huge slices of squids & oyster mushrooms. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 as mediocre and 10 as very yummy, I would personally rate this dish as a 8. Ah Loy Thai tom yum soup tasted much nicer than the Tom Yum soup I tried at Porns. I would definitely order this dish again on my next visit.

Here's our 2nd dish, Fried Glass Noodle, which cost $7.50.

This was another very yummy dish. As usual, the restaurant gave a generous serving of prawns and eggs too. The fried glass noodle was very aromatic and very yummy!!! Smooth, silky noodle, coupled with the other ingredients, made me slowly savored this dish. Even my girlfriend liked this dish very much. I would give a rating of 9 for the Fried Glass Noodle. While we are happily tucking into our 2 super yummy dishes, I suddenly spotted something special in my fried glass noodle. I am actually surprised to find that the chef had mixed baby shrimps into it and they are crunchy too. I seldom see chef mix baby shrimp into fried glass noodle and this is my first time seeing it. Here's the photo:

Can you see the baby shrimp mixed together with the prawn? Aren't they cute...

My next dish, Pineapple Fried Rice, was a total disappointment. As usual, the chef added a lot of prawns and egg into this dish.

I just felt that the Pineapple Fried Rice was not worth the $7. Firstly it doesn't taste like fried rice nor does the pineapple taste stands out distinctly. Instead what I felt for this dish is that it has a wide mixture of taste and I can't really identify it as a fried rice. Both of us had difficulty in finishing this dish but I endured and finished it up, so as not to waste the food. I won't order this dish on my next visit again. Very disappointing...

Luckily, the restaurant "redeemed" its reputation in its next dish, Pandan Chicken, which cost $10.

Honestly speaking, I do find that the Pandan Chicken was a bit pricey. $10 for 4 pieces only? That worked out to $2.50 for a small piece of chicken. Expensive... I can get a plate of chicken rice for each piece of pandan chicken. Haha. But nonetheless, I must admit that this dish was yummy too. It was much more aromatic than the Tom Yum soup or the Fried Glass Noodle. Also the chicken was nicely marinated and cooked. The tenderness of the chicken meat was just nice and certain portion of the meat is crispy while certain portion of the meat is tender. I wonder how the chef did this? I guess maybe it's because of the pandan leaves that distribute the heat unevenly throughout the meat. So certain portion that faces the heat became crispy while the top is tender and soft. Amazing skill... Overall I think this dish deserved a 8.

I almost forgot. We almost fainted when the cashier told us to be prepared to wait for 40 minutes before our food is served. Being so famished, we waited in anticipation for our first dish to be served. Luckily it didn't take as long as 40 minutes. I think our first dish arrived around 20 minutes later. So it wasn't so bad but in total we waited for 40 minutes for our first dish (20 minutes in the queue and 20 minutes from placement of order). But both of us felt that this 40 minutes wait was indeed worthwhile, except for the disappointing pineapple fried rice. Both of us will definitely visit this restaurant again. I am looking forward to trying out their other dishes. But for my next visit, I have to be well-prepared for the long wait and not turn up at this restaurant with a famished stomach.

Overall decoration of this restaurant: 7 out of 10. I think they could have done better in their decorations. But I am not too particular over it so long as the food served are yummy.

Accessibility: It was pretty accessible. It was located at Shaw Towers along Beach Road and we walked from Raflles Shopping Centre. But I reckon it will be much nearer if you walk from Suntec City to this restaurant. For people who drive, they can park at Shaw Tower carpark but I am not sure what's the hourly rate.

Service: 7 out of 10. Both the boss and lady boss were very friendly and they even promptly helped to clear the empty plates and also asked us politely whether there are any dishes that wasn't being served yet.

Overall satisfaction: 9 out of 10. I would definitely visit Ah Loy Thai restaurant again. If my friends ever ask me for yummy Thai food recommendation, Ah Loy Thai would definitely be on the top of my list.

My first time dining in Ah Loy Thai and it definitely did not fail me. I ordered the pineapple fried rice which costs $5.90. I really enjoy the food and the rice was very fragrant and the portion was also huge, very much sufficient to keep my stomach filling. I like the ingredients such as prawns, raisins and chicken used to fried together with the rice. I will come back for more again.

But when you eat it with right, it is just right. The gravy is also very tasty too, makes you wanna eat mouth after mouth.

Definitely a must-try dish when visiting this restaurant! Do note however that the dishes are rather expensive but well worth it as they serve quality Thai cuisine! A great place for family dinners or a gathering as the restaurant has a nice ambience and decor and the staff are attentive and friendly! The mango salad is very refreshing and perfect for a starter. A little sour but it's okay for me.
