Signature Dishes
Thank you Arthur for treating us the dessert, they were Ice Kacang and Chendol. The most common form of Ice Kacang was topped with sweet red beans, colours layered of shaved ice, palm nut, jelly, buttered corn and poured of Gula Melaka. Personally, I prefer the Ice Kacang without Kacang which meant without red bean. The portion was finely enough and I was very refreshing. Whereas the Chendol which served with a thick straw in glass was equally satisfying, they costed $5.80 in total.

I usually order ice kachang or qing tng instead of drinks when I am at the food court. Both being similarly priced at $2.50 each at the Dessert Stall of Food Republic, I opted for the ice kachang - a pyramid shaped shaved iced dessert with stewed red beans, diced agar agar, diced chin chow, cream style corn and palm seeds. The version I got from Food Republic lacked chin chow and evaporated milk that should have been drizzled atop the shaved ice together with the colourful syrups. Instead of pyramid shaped ice kachang the stallholder made a narrow ice column (see photo) so I did not get any satisfaction from demolishing spoonful by spoonful the mound of sweet milky shaved ice that I usually enjoy doing elsewhere. The narrow ice column at Food Republic Collapsed within 5 minutes.Poor value when they charge 25% more for the ice kachang compared with other food courts.

This is one of my favourite air-conditioned food courts around Orchard area. It is very comfortable and spacious, and really enjoy a tall cup of their popular chendol from this dessert stall. At less than three dollars per cup, I get to enjoy this really big portion of cool dessert that tastey really delicious! Love those creamy coconut milk and brown sugar added in it which are both equally fragrant and have enhanced the taste of this local dessert. The generous amount of red beans and coloured jelly strips also very yummy and fresh.

I wanted something refreshing for my dessert as I had a heavy meal. Therefore, getting the ice jelly seems like a good choice since jelly is cooling. However, this plate of ice jelly is quite expensive at $3, probably because the jelly comes with some cubed mangoes. I found the mangoes to be quite sweet and goes well with the ice jelly which is slightly sweet. I like to drizzle the lime over the jelly as it gives a contrasting taste. Even though its nice, but considering the price, I will probably not order this again since it isn't very worth the money.

The Food Republic in Somerset 313 is on the 5th floor. It is different from the other food court. It has a very clean, bright and classy ambiance. In the middle of the food court is an opening that allows one to look all the way down to the ground floor. The stalls are arranged in an unusual way, not like the standard stalls by stalls way. This dessert stall is like an island surrounded by the tables and chairs. It has a great variety of desserts. But my daughter picked this Aloe Vera Grass Jelly out of all the desserts offered. A little unusual. Glass Jelly's normally mixed with Longgan. The grass jelly itself was quite tasteless but the aloe vera was sweet. With a little lime squeezed into it, uhm, what a refreshing taste.
