1. Going electronic.

I remember the first time visiting Genki Sushi and getting all impressed with its all-electronic system that meant ordering from an iPad, receiving sushi plates on a super cute train, and sending it back by pushing a button! Clearing plates require manpower though. This makes the whole dining experience much more exciting and fun.

2. Varietyyyy!

Genki Sushi has quite a crazy amount of sushi choices for you to choose from, although all you see here are nigiri and gunkan (which are my favourites). Keep tabs on how much you've ordered or you're definitely going to burst your budget (whatever it is!) or your stomach space! Everything is very attractive and tapping away at the iPad screen gets pretty addictive too.

3. Value-for-money

I wouldn't say that the sushi is top-notch or as good as Itacho Sushi's (I refer to ION or Plaza Singapura's branches), but it's pretty good for the price, variety and overall atmosphere of the place. It's enough to satisfy, and definitely don't miss out on the smoked duck nigiri which I'm absolutely crazy over! If you haven't been here before, I'll say go for it!

Do note that the queue for Genki Sushi can get very long sometimes, and waiting time goes up to 30 minutes or more during peak hours. There are chairs for those waiting at the front of queue though. I guess the new branch opening at Bugis+ might ease the overcrowding a little. You can always go to Tanuki Raw for fresh oysters as a backup plan if you are already at Orchard Central.

The thickness and sweetness of rice was just nice, wrapping skill was fine. Better quality with well-seasoned ingredients, sushi was in correct texture. Friendly familiar sushi selection, the choices were a lot. Price was ranged approximately from $2.00 to $6.00, relatively all right. With such creative idea, it deserved a noteworthy Japanese eatery at Singapore.

Upon ordering food using their ipad, a jackpot page suddenly pop out (did not manage to capture it). we played and really won. and our prize is 10% off from the total bill. i personally find that this concept is very special. really like dining in this place. will definitely come back often

Sushi at Genki has never failed to impress me, especially from this outlet as it is more spacious and comfortable. The waitress here are also friendly and service here is prompt and efficient. Enjoyed the egg sushi which the thick egg omelette is fresh and soft in texture. The japanese rice used in their sushi is firm and chewy. Their sashimi are also super fresh and the portion ss quite thick in slices too. At merely less than $10 for three plates of sushi is really valued for money.

hehe.

yep i think coming to genki sushi is a lot about the whole experience - it's pretty fun! the quality of the food is not bad, but i would say the selection is pretty limited.

we were absolutely starving when we reached the restaurant!!!!! because there was a queue as well (they dont take reservations), so we had to wait pretty long before going in. started ordering massive amounts of food. first ordered the inari ($1.80), a hot favourite among us. loved the light sweetness of the beancurd skin.

we were on a sashimi craze, and ordered several portions of the salmon nigiri ($2.30) and also the sake oyako don ($7.80). the sashimi was pretty fresh, and gosh, i have to say the sake oyako don is the most value-for-money sashimi rice ever!!!
now i know where to go for affordable and good sashimi rice. there was quite a generous portion of sashimi!

we also ordered the chicken teriyaki don ($5.80). i feel like i havent eaten this dish for the longest time! haha, it was pretty good!

i loved my soft shell crab handroll ($3.80)! the crab was fried to a delicate crisp

the salmon belly nigiri ($2.30) was LOVELY!
one grade higher than normal salmon sashimi, this was seared lightly on the top, and the belly fats lent an additional flavour to the dish. dont worry, it's healthy fats ;)

finally, we had the takoyaki ($3.80). it came piping hot on the inside, and i'm always so fascinated by the fish flakes on top! haha they can move! lol.

I like that there is not too much of water in the egg custard as I cut into it and also because the chawanmushi is very very smooth. I will definitely come again!

Genki sushi has a wide variety of sushi and you'll be spoilt for choice. I have tried it previously and had a pleasant experience. Genki Sushi is quite crowded and is likely you have to queue for sometime before you get a seat especially during peak hours. This place is really popular! The service staff are generally very friendly. Just that at times they might get overwhelmed so it's hard to get their attention. But who cares! You got a mobile train/car that sends you your food! We ordered the Salmon Triple Flavour and a lot of other makis. The ingredients are fresh and does not have the "left on the conveyor belt" taste.

A little costly as compared to the other stuff (could be because of my friends choosing expensive options). Otherwise it's worth it and I will come back here time to time.

Orchard Central is huge and has a wide variety of interesting little shops to walk around and check out.

Pretty interesting place cos the food you ordered is being "transported" to your table by an 'express train"!

Talking about technology, Genki Sushi has one of the most innovative ordering methods. Each table is equipped with one iPad preloaded with their very own application, which you order your food directly from the device. Your dishes will be delivered promptly right to you in a mini shinkansen (bullet train) on it's "railway track". After unloading your food, one then pressed a button to send the carrier back to the kitchen. How cool is that, I have to admit that I was pretty amused and mesmerized

Don't know how to use their "GenkiPad"? Do not hesitate to approach one of their staff.

One of the must orders are the Salmon Triple Flavor (S$3.80) and Shrimp Triple Flavor (S$3.80), which consists of the key ingredients done in different ways. My favourite among the three is the ones which are seared briefly and topped with black pepper, which adds an additional kick to the sushi. There is also a similar version for the crab as well (S$3.80).

Seared Salmon with Pollack Roe (S$2.30) is nicely seared with a faint burnt fragrance, but Peiyi was complaining about the lack of roes (or it's either the roes got melted when it was seared.) The salmon meat is soft and melts slightly in your mouth.

Their Steamed Egg Custard (S$2.30) is soft and silky, and packed with a reasonable amount of fish cakes, mushrooms and crab sticks. The downside is that the steamed egg lacks in flavour, it doesn't have the distinct eggy flavour.

Japanese Chilli Pepper to the rescue!

Feeling a need to eat something more, we ordered the Oyaku Don (S$5.80) - deep fried chicken chunks with a nice layer of fat in thin batter, paired with strips of sweet onion and runny omelette, and served along with a good bowl of Koshihikari rice, planted by the Japanese in Vietnam. I could really do with more eggs though.

One of my favourite is their free-flow of Japanese Green Tea (S$1.50), which you do-it-yourself, by mixing the green tea powder with hot water. Needless to say, you can adjust how strong is your cup of tea according to your preference.

Genki Sushi adds on to my list of favourites, and I'll definitely be back for more economical, yet authentic and quality Japanese food.

Just a conclusion tip - be there early or skip the peak hours. We were there at about 8.45pm on a Saturday, and we had to wait for approximately 20 - 30 minutes.

The Food
I ordered the Lobster Salad Gunkan and Spicy Salmon Handroll.
Even though the sushi is called Lobster Salad but there were no real lobster meat inside but the taste is very nice.

The Service
When entering the restaurant, I was greeted by one of the friendly waitresses Service and she ushered me to an empty table promptly. She then explained how to use the Ipad to order the food which I find is very innovative and high tech !! After ordering the food through the Ipad, the sushi were served in cute bullet train on railway tracks on the conveyor belt and stopped in front of my table with the sushi I ordered within minutes which I find it very efficient and fast !!

The Ambience
I like the quiet and cosy ambience and surroundings which made me feel relaxed

The Price
Reasonally priced at $2.30 each for the Lobster Salad Gunkan and Spicy Salmon Handroll

Overall
I will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this!

Had dinner here with a friend a few weeks back. I've been to Genki Sushi quite often as I find that their sushi are rather fresh. Unlike the usual Japanese restaurants where your sushi goes round and round the conveyor belt, the sushi here is made-to-serve and arrives fresh on a cute train or race car, straight from the kitchen. Their fried Onsen Egg was rather special too - fried crispy on the outside and the egg is still a little gooey inside.

Upon reaching there at about 6.30pm, we waited more than one hour (7.30pm) just to get a seat inside! We needed to wait for a big table because there were 6 of us, but the waiting time is simply atrocious. It didn't spoil our moods because we had fun chit-chatting while waiting outside

You can order 5 items and send your order first which comes on this electronic train. It's so cute and super super (!!!!!) efficient. You just press 'order', and then within 1 minute you will receive your food already. It is just this fast. I guess it made up of the long waiting time. On the iPad, you can also check how much you've spent.

Tip for ordering: Don't order any drinks, you can collect your own free iced water at the water dispenser. There's also free green tea powder at your table which you can mix with the iced water and you get iced green tea ;D Don't look at this suggestion in disgust, it actually tastes nice, just like normal green tea.

The Food

We ordered a whole lot because the iPad makes it so fun and impulsive to order, order and order!!! =D I will tell you the average price even after all this crazy ordering. It's really just click whatever you like to eat! We ordered the usual type of sushis to first satisfy our hunger before venturing into those funny looking ones.

Please order this sushi, it's really my favourite sushi out of everything there and it tastes fabulous!!!

My friends also randomly ordered (OMG :X) a lot of funny-looking dishes. The poached egg thing (top right) is just hard-boiled egg with a crunchy exterior. The egg yolk is the bomb - it is the sort of jelly-texture (half-cooked but not liquidy, semi-hard, oh so delicious) that I think everyone loves!!! But it is very expensive, I think $5+ for just that dish itself. It is a good try but really not worth it, so remember not to order that unless you are really hungry for the jelly-like egg yolk

Referring to the bottom centre item, it is some sort of really strong-tasting thing (I forgot the name) but I think it is oyster. The centre part looks hard but omg it is actually very soft!!! Even softer than tofu, I tell you (not exaggerating). We squeezed the lemon juice all over it and we dug in! Yums yums.. but it is so salty and sour (from the lemon juice) at the same time, and without any rice to go along, it's really too strong... another *interesting experiment*... It would go perfectly with a bowl of rice though.

The bowl of shark-fin-looking soup (no it's not shark fin...) is really delicious. Another must-order item!!! There are two flavours of the soup, we ordered both. I love both of it!!! It is definitely worth eating.

The rest of the sushis are just normal-delicious because I like sushis so I'll be biased when it comes to determining the taste.

(Actually this picture only shows a fraction of what we ordered because after I took this picture I just started eating frantically)

The Service
The waiter/staff who was managing the queue came around to first ask us how many seats we need and he also came around to explain that we will need to wait very long due to our big group. However his earlier estimation of 20mins was doubled before we had a seat... -_- Not his fault anyway, probably too fun inside for people to get out!!!

Previously we planned a birthday surprise so I passed the cake to one of the staff to help spring a surprise for both of our friends. She readily agreed and also produced two candles when I asked if they had any! Wow I was surprised

The Atmosphere
The train sushi-serving machine system beats the conveyor belt sushi in terms of innovation!!!
It's really so fun to see our food delivered in a cute fashion. Loved it! The booths also give me a sense of privacy and at the same time not barricaded from service at any one point.

Overall
We paid about $15/pax (after GST) and it is actually quite acceptable given that we anyhow ordered like crazy. It felt like a buffet, seriously. I will definitely recommend to my other friends again, but never will I go on a weekend anymore. The queue is crazy! But that also goes to show how popular this place is ;)
