I was around Outram area and decided to drop by Everton Park to check out some of the cafes. I pass by Grin Affair and took away two of their jar cakes! They have a range of flavours and I got two of their bestsellers, the Lychee Passion and Dark Chocolate! Between the 2 flavours, I prefer the dark chocolate as it is richer in taste compared to the lychee passion. This is my first time trying a jar cake, which I felt was too light for my tastebuds, probably because they use chiffon type of cakes. Each jar cake is priced at the $5.50 to $7 range, which I personally feel is expensive considering the size and quality. continue reading

I am a fan of all things pretty (especially desserts) so when i heard about Grin Affairs, i know i had to check them out.The place is quite out-of-the-way if you are taking public transport, so be expected to walk for some distance to reach the small bakery. The one on the left is Cookies and Cream and on the right was strawberry cheese. The general verdict of these cakes is that its soft, nice and not too sweet. If only their serving size is bigger. However i really liked that they allow customers to keep the jar which can then be transformed for other uses (i.e. Spice holder, flower pot)Price per jarcake: $5-6 continue reading

Opened by environment enthusiast and self taught baker Jody Ang, the novel concept behind Grin Affair is in serving up cakes in glass jars unlike the conventional methods of serving a slice on a plate! Think of a parfait without the ice-cream, and instead, fresh ingredients of fruits, cake, nuts and even ganache used in the layers. Definitely a less messy affair when eating cake since it's all compact and contained in a jar!All 12 flavours offered at Grin Affair are displayed on homemade decorated boards in the shop, giving a very homey and rustic feel to the customer. Most of them are own creations by Jody and many get sold out pretty quickly so you might want to get in early if you have specific preferences of flavours you would like to try! After much difficulty, we finally decided on 5 out of the 12 selections and the gang was getting very impatient holding their spoons in anticipation as I took my shots. Gotta give it to them for their self control and patience with me!The Kiwi Cheesecake is said to be one of the best sellers! $5.50 for layers of cream cheese with fresh kiwi slices and moist vanilla cake, topped with a later of crunchy nut praline, this was a pretty sight! Loved how the bright green colour of the kiwi fruit contrasted against the yellow vanilla cake and dark brown praline. Felt like an excited little kid rubbing my hands in glee as I waited for my turn to put the spoon into the jar to scoop out the layers. The Dark Chocolate was a real steal at $5.50. This is definitely one for all dark chocolate lovers but a little too bitter and rich for my liking. Special mention to the sea salt dulce de leche that was so smooth and the crunchy chocolate ganache dome at the top of the cake. Very delicately done and simply a work of art.Grin Affair is definitely one of a kind and a trip worth making down. These lovely cakes in jars make for pretty and unique gift ideas as Jody covers each glass jar with pretty recyclable paper and string. Each jar also comes with a tag that you can collect and exchange for goodies as Jody encourages you to return the glass jars to the shop in exchange for an extra tag.Delicious and aesthetically pleasing cakes in glass jars and an owner with a heart for the environment? It's much too easy to fall in love and have an affair with Grin Affair. continue reading

Don’t know whether there’s still a hype for desserts in a jar nowadays but came to try it today at Grin Affair. I ordered Banoffee, there’s generous amount of fragrant and soft banana slices, moist coffee flavored cake drown in smooth custard topped with a layer of thin baked crust, crunchy pecan and ‘caramelized milk’ (taste and textured like a candy)Strawberry Cheese, fluffy vanilla sponge buried in creamy and smooth cream cheese with sour strawberry slices in between topped with a chewy, soggy layer of cookie. Verdict: I've tried it and it’s palatable but I don’t quiet like the ‘baby’ food mash up feel. continue reading

I love dessert. I love it so much that i will travel to anywhere just for it. I have heard and read about this particular place that served cake in the bottle. I was there on a weekday afternoon at about 2 pm. I simply love the rustic feel of that wooden door. To enter from the front door, please lift the door up slightly while pushing it.Their operating hours are 12 to 8 pm from Tuesday to Saturday and 1.30 pm to 6 pm on Sunday. Since Monday is not mentioned then it is likely to be their off day. There are a wide range of selection of different types of bottled cake available for selection : Strawberry Cheese, Cookies & Cream, Hazelnut, Matcha Azuki, Honey Lavender, Avocado, Caramel, Kiwi Cheese, Dark Chocolate, Durian, Banoffee, Peanut Fudge, Mango Cheese and Banana Dark Chocolate. Apparently, not all flavors are available at all times as some are seasonal. The interior is simply decorated to give a country feel. There was only a nice Auntie manning the shop. I decided to have a Hazelnut bottled cake at $5.50 to go. The prices of these chilled cake served in the jars range from $4.80 to $6.50. I asked the Auntie for the permission to take some pictures of the shop. The Auntie waited for me to done taking the pictures then took out a jar from the fridge right behind her. She asked whether i need a bag though it stated the minimum purchase has to be 4 jars to get a carrier. She offered a normal red plastic bag and a disposable spoon is given too. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of this friendly Auntie. I was given the option of dining in. There are limited seating capacity in this humble looking shop. And, I was the only customer there at that time. The bottled cake is nicely presented. The jar is covered with a paper cap with string tied to it. You might be wondering what is the purpose of the string. The string is served as handle to carry the jar. I could taste the distinctive hazelnut taste in the mousse served with crunchy nut praline. It has got bits of freshly grated hazelnuts in it. The hazelnut mousse was nicely rested on moist Coffee and Chocolate sponge cake to give it the layer effect with a well-balanced sweetness. It is quite a small jar to be priced at $5.50 but a delightful choice for dessert. Once i started i could not stop. And, 1 of such bottle is just not enough to satisfy me.The jar is really small. I could not help but feel the moment when i started to enjoy it i only left with the last mouthful and it ended up leaving me craving for more. The jar can be returned for a ticket. The collected tickets can be used to exchange for Apple Brew (10 tickets), Jar of Dried Fruit (12 tickets) and Jar of Cake (20 tickets). continue reading
