I was around Outram area and decided to drop by Everton Park to check out some of the cafes. I pass by Grin Affair and took away two of their jar cakes! They have a range of flavours and I got two of their bestsellers, the Lychee Passion and Dark Chocolate! Between the 2 flavours, I prefer the dark chocolate as it is richer in taste compared to the lychee passion. Between the 2 flavours, I prefer the dark chocolate as it is richer in taste compared to the lychee passion. This is my first time trying a jar cake, which I felt was too light for my tastebuds, probably because they use chiffon type of cakes. Each jar cake is priced at the $5.50 to $7 range, which I personally feel is expensive considering the size and quality.

The one on the left is Cookies and Cream and on the right was strawberry cheese.

The general verdict of these cakes is that its soft, nice and not too sweet. If only their serving size is bigger.

However i really liked that they allow customers to keep the jar which can then be transformed for other uses (i.e. Spice holder, flower pot)

Price per jarcake: $5-6

All 12 flavours offered at Grin Affair are displayed on homemade decorated boards in the shop, giving a very homey and rustic feel to the customer. Most of them are own creations by Jody and many get sold out pretty quickly so you might want to get in early if you have specific preferences of flavours you would like to try!

After much difficulty, we finally decided on 5 out of the 12 selections and the gang was getting very impatient holding their spoons in anticipation as I took my shots. Gotta give it to them for their self control and patience with me!

The Kiwi Cheesecake is said to be one of the best sellers! $5.50 for layers of cream cheese with fresh kiwi slices and moist vanilla cake, topped with a later of crunchy nut praline, this was a pretty sight! Loved how the bright green colour of the kiwi fruit contrasted against the yellow vanilla cake and dark brown praline. Felt like an excited little kid rubbing my hands in glee as I waited for my turn to put the spoon into the jar to scoop out the layers.

The Dark Chocolate was a real steal at $5.50. This is definitely one for all dark chocolate lovers but a little too bitter and rich for my liking. Special mention to the sea salt dulce de leche that was so smooth and the crunchy chocolate ganache dome at the top of the cake. Very delicately done and simply a work of art.

Grin Affair is definitely one of a kind and a trip worth making down. These lovely cakes in jars make for pretty and unique gift ideas as Jody covers each glass jar with pretty recyclable paper and string. Each jar also comes with a tag that you can collect and exchange for goodies as Jody encourages you to return the glass jars to the shop in exchange for an extra tag.

Delicious and aesthetically pleasing cakes in glass jars and an owner with a heart for the environment? It's much too easy to fall in love and have an affair with Grin Affair.

Strawberry Cheese, fluffy vanilla sponge buried in creamy and smooth cream cheese with sour strawberry slices in between topped with a chewy, soggy layer of cookie.
Verdict: I've tried it and it’s palatable but I don’t quiet like the ‘baby’ food mash up feel.

There are a wide range of selection of different types of bottled cake available for selection : Strawberry Cheese, Cookies & Cream, Hazelnut, Matcha Azuki, Honey Lavender, Avocado, Caramel, Kiwi Cheese, Dark Chocolate, Durian, Banoffee, Peanut Fudge, Mango Cheese and Banana Dark Chocolate. Apparently, not all flavors are available at all times as some are seasonal.

The interior is simply decorated to give a country feel. There was only a nice Auntie manning the shop. I decided to have a Hazelnut bottled cake at $5.50 to go. The prices of these chilled cake served in the jars range from $4.80 to $6.50.

I asked the Auntie for the permission to take some pictures of the shop. The Auntie waited for me to done taking the pictures then took out a jar from the fridge right behind her. She asked whether i need a bag though it stated the minimum purchase has to be 4 jars to get a carrier. She offered a normal red plastic bag and a disposable spoon is given too. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of this friendly Auntie.

The bottled cake is nicely presented. The jar is covered with a paper cap with string tied to it. You might be wondering what is the purpose of the string. The string is served as handle to carry the jar. I could taste the distinctive hazelnut taste in the mousse served with crunchy nut praline.

It has got bits of freshly grated hazelnuts in it. The hazelnut mousse was nicely rested on moist Coffee and Chocolate sponge cake to give it the layer effect with a well-balanced sweetness.

Once i started i could not stop. And, 1 of such bottle is just not enough to satisfy me.

The jar is really small. I could not help but feel the moment when i started to enjoy it i only left with the last mouthful and it ended up leaving me craving for more.

The jar can be returned for a ticket. The collected tickets can be used to exchange for Apple Brew (10 tickets), Jar of Dried Fruit (12 tickets) and Jar of Cake (20 tickets).

The banoffee was really nice because of the banana pieces!! Anyway the trick to eating cakes in jars is to dig all the way down to the bottom of the jar with your spoon in order to taste each layer of goodness together. No point eating the crust the last. Cookies and cream was just like the normal oreo cheesecake taste. Anyway dine-in no longer allowed so it's just take away.

We returned the 2 jars after finishing it outside but we didn't get the tickets unfortunately
But it's okay, saving the environment is more important and I doubt I'll travel all the way just for a few jars unless I'm in the vicinity.

It isn't really a place conducive for you to sit and chill as it's a pretty small area and I didn't exactly like the dark and rather shabby interior. The people were really friendly though, giving you ample time to study their menu and they were quite efficient. Something to note though, they don't provide carriers unless you buy 4 jars and above, an environmentally friendly and cost-cutting move I suppose, but I thought it was quite dangerous too since they were glass jars. Plus, the jars were only covered with the sheet of paper and not secured with a lid, making it more fragile. Luckily I happened to have an extra carrier with me, so bring one if you're intending to buy just a few to try out.

The description wrote mocha pudding with sour cherries and chocolate chips. First taste of it, I thought the chocolate was too overpowering and it felt like a sinful chocolate dessert instead. It didn't have the texture of a pudding, it felt more like a harder version of mousse but that was just the top layer. Digging into it further, I had another mouthful without the top layer and I could finally taste a stronger tinge of coffee in it. I like the different layers of sponge cake that was very finely made and some refreshing bursts of cherries with crunchy bits of chocolate. There was an element of surprise and almost every mouthful tasted different.

The cherries, though, could have been better if it was juicier and in bigger pieces as it tasted almost like a slightly moist raisin. It was also abit too sweet for my liking and perhaps the chocolate taste could have been cut down slightly.

I've always been a fruity person so this was a must-try for me. This sat well with me with its light and refreshing flavour. The strawberries if taken on its own were slightly sourish but it went well with the custard mousse that was lightly sweetened and the fine texture of the sponge cake. It was a good combination, simple and tasted great!

Desserts in a jar, an interesting concept that's been finely executed. If you're having a sweet tooth and feel like snacking without feeling sinful, this is quite a good fix. (Note that it's just mere feeling, as the small jars made me feel like I haven't ate alot. Depending on the flavours, it might still be quite a sinful indulgence!) I really like their sponge cake that has been used as a base for both but differently flavoured. It's extremely fine and light that it almost melts in your mouth, and it's nothing like the usual sponge cake you can get off the typical neighbourhood bakeries.

I'm not too sure though if I would pay the price again for the rather small serving portion. Well, I was quite deceived when I first saw photos, thinking of jam jars. Be warned that it's pretty small, each jar can fit into the size of a palm easily.

Grin Affair has got to be one of the first to start the "cake in the jar" trend in Singapore, with many following suit thereafter. Nestled in a small corner in Everton Park, Grin Affair sells cakes in the form of jars. Pretty creative isn't it? Having disappointed the previous time, I went earlier this time round, determined to get some cakes home.

They have many flavours on sale and all looks super tempting! A bottle costs about $5 plus on average, some flavours which are more special costs a bit more. I bought the strawberry custard ($5.50), cookies and cream ($4.80), banofee ($5.50) and dark chocolate ($5.50). Gave 3 to my friends while I kept the dark chocolate one for myself. My friends all loved the cake, except one who tried the cookies and cream one.

I personally liked the dark chocolate one a lot. The jar consists of sponge cake and mousse and a chocolate ball-like thing on top. The cake was really smooth and super nice! Though it's a little costly, I think it's worth a try plus it's not too bad a gift to get for your friend!

Be there early cos they sell out really early on days and you won't want to be disappointed! Grab a cuppa at Nylon Coffee Roasters to complete your day! ;)

Happen to chance upon this shop that sells Jarcake. Bought the Strawberry Custard and I'm loving it. The packaging is nice (of coz that attracted me the most) and the cake is not too bad as well. The cake is packed in a jar - one layer of vanilla cake, one layer of strawberry custard with real strawberries and another later of vanilla cake. It is heavenly. Will definitely go back to try the other different flavours too.

I came across this article that was introducing Grin Affair on one of the local newspaper this friday and came to know about Grin affair .

We had the dark chocolate at $5.50 per jar. On top of the jar there is one chocolate, it was the saltiest chocolate that I ever had. In between its cake and chocolate, there was thick layer of condensed milk. I find it a very weird combination. The cake is not what I had expected - there were merely any dark chocolate taste, its more like chocolate cream only. I was rather disappointed and felt short changed. The cake are just like the normal chocolate cake we have from those ordinary shop house bakery, nothing to rave about.

Service
Service was quick. The auntie is friendly and polite.

Ambience
The place is quite run down but with air con, the main entrance to the shop is via the backdoor of the HDB building which is situated above the air-con compressors and also places where people are hanging their clothing above. The shop name was decorated as shown with places and some algae over it.

When we entered the shop, we have no idea of what flavors of cake they are offering as there were no display of the cakes in the fridge for customers to see unlike the normal cake shop, we will get to see the real thing and select our choice on the spot base on what we see. The lady directed us to the board on the wall for the menu. There were quite a number of choices available.

Price
Overpriced as the portion and quality doesn't match its pricing. As the shop was situated in a neighborhood district that is not very near to the MRT, people like me had went there all the way. Considering my trip there too, its not really price effective.

Recommendations / Tips
No recommendations. This will be my first and last visit.

He bought me Dark Chocolate and Hazelnut flavors. But I kinda forgot how they taste like so I decided to pop by Grin Affair after my internship interview! I was a little too early when I reached (about 11am) because they only open for business at 12 noon.

Grin Affair promotes recycling so you are more than encouraged to return your jar to get a ticket! You can accumulate your tickets and redeem those items. Other than the jar, the string can also be reused.

Dark Chocolate - $5.50 (4.5/5)

Grin Affair only accepts cash so I put together all the loose change I had and bought a jar. It was a treat to myself after my internship interview, even though Glenn said I should only celebrate after I am being accepted into any of the companies. Haha! Ok la I admit, I just want to eat. No other reasons.

Starting from the bottom of the jar up, the Marron cake consist of a baked crust, sponge cake slice, chestnut mousse, and coffee cake slice, finished off with a small whole chestnut. Do not be afraid to 'mess up' the cake as you have to really scoop right through from top to bottom to taste the whole combination, which blends really well in your mouth despite the many layers.
Nevertheless, I tried eating by layers. While the cake slices was soft and moist and the baked crust was fragrant, the chestnut mousse was a bit too much to take on its on as it's ratio to the cake/crust was about 3:1. I would recommend one to take everything together.
One thing i don't really like about it is that the marron on top is really small and dry.

Very interesting concept. Will try again soon.

this new product CARAMEL ($6.50) was VERY GOOD. With the crunchy almond nibs crust, vanilla cake, caramel mousse, topped with brown sugar meringue and that luscious sea salt dulce de leche, how could one find fault in this golden formula?

however, The Matcha ($5.50), so to speak, had decent matcha mousse, not too sweet but stiffened red bean, a repeated component of vanilla cake. But the walnut topping tarnished everything as it had turned rancid and was extremely bitter.
