I have heard of so many positive comment about the fried carrot cake in Ghim Moh but I have never gotten a chance in trying them until last Weekend when I was there by chance. The original Ghim Moh Food Centre is under renovation currently and all the hawker stalls have been shifted to a temporary site, located right next to the place.Though there was already queue ahead of us, the waiting time was still within limits. I should say the plate of carrot cake is worth waiting for. The first mouthful rekindle the old memories in me, the not so sweet black carrot cake packed with fragrant at every bite had been me a flash back to my younger days. I love the cripsy texture and its charred egg bites in between those carrot cakes which were cut into rectangular cubes or even into pieces during frying. With all said above, Hock Soon Carrot Cake really lives up to its reputable comment. A trip to Ghim Moh Hawker Cetnre wont be completed if you have not tried their carrot cake.More reviews available at http://www.umakemehungry.com/2014/12/hock-soon-carrot-cake.html continue reading

When my friends and I dine at the Ghim Moh market, we like to order a plate of carrot cake to share. There are 2 stalls in this market selling carrot cake, but we usually order from Hock Soon because it costs only $2 per plate and is quite tasty as well. Unfortunately, the taste seems to have gone down compared to my numerous tastings last year. There is now no more chopped spring onion scattered atop the dish and also, the carrot cake pieces are now less uniform in its pieces, with quite a few huge chunks still within the plate. The smaller pieces still retain the good taste of old, with the chai pok (salted radish) and egg mixed in well together with the wok hei (wok fragrance). It would have easily garnered a 4/5 for it's taste previously but now I'm only inclined to give a 3/5. Will continue to monitor the taste of the carrot cake. Granted, it's now hard to get a plate of carrot cake for $2, so it's still alright to order a plate for sharing. Will let ya guys know if it's back to it's previous glory continue reading
