We decided to pop by here because it opens till midnight on weekdays. Finding a parking spot on the road side parking was pretty hard but we managed. The ramen broth was so strong though good... My friends tried their super doooper hard noodles which according to the waiter was noodles cooked in bowling water for a glorious 3 seconds.. Which means it's pretty much raw noodles.. But my friends loved it

A fluffy, pillow soft steamed bun encases a succulent piece of braised chashu - so tender that it simply melts in your mouth – with a creamy mayo based sauce. This is similar to the Chinese kong ba pau (pork slices with steamed bun), except that the meat is lighter in taste (which I prefer). Just try not to overload yourself with pork buns, after all the ramen is still the star of this place.

Classic ramen – Shiromaru motoaji ($15): Classic Hakata-style ramen. The broth was hearty and tasty, yet light on the palate (not laden with oil). Served was thin and straight noodles (no kee taste noted) and topped with tender and flavourful slices of pork belly, cabbage, black fungus, spring onions and pickled ginger. This would be suitable for those who prefer their ramen simple and safe.

Modern ramen – Akamaru Shinaji ($16): My all time favourite! Ippudo’s tonkotsu broth enhanced with blended miso and garlic oil. This is also served with served with thin and straight noodles (Hakata-style noodles) and topped with buttery slices of pork belly, black fungus and and spring onions. The rich and flavourful broth was more aromatic than the classic (garlic oil, of course) and this is also the reason why I love it so much. Even though the broth looks oily, it doesn’t leave a cloying feeling. So fret not and slurp away! The flavoured egg did not disappoint as well. It was still cold when served and the yolk (most important part for me) was deliciously molten, just the way I like it. This ramen would be suitable for garlic lovers and those who prefer a full flavoured broth.

Featured ramen – Bonito tonkotsu ($16): Another non-spicy take on the signature tonkotsu broth, this is made with bonito fish stock and served with Hakata-style noodles. The broth was heavy on the taste of the bonito fish stock and extremely flavoursome to say the least. Initial mouthfuls drew praises all over the table but the taste of the bonito fish stock got a little overwhelming after awhile. Tip: Adding raw garlic cuts through the rich tasting broth and the piquant taste of garlic adds an extra kick to the ramen. This would be suitable for those who are fans of bonito and/or like strong, bold flavours.

Overall, this is place recommended for its ramen, especially the Akamaru Shinaji.

There is this weekday lunch promotion for March - the Ippudo pork/ fish/ shrimp buns (2 for $5++). It actually looks like the Chinese kong bak pau and we decided to order that first as we were all hungry.

I had the Ippudo Fish Bun. The fish was nicely fried, but seriously, it's actually like eating a Filet O'Fish, same kind of crispiness, just a smaller portion hehe.

Shortly after, the sides to our set lunches came. I ordered Set A which comprises of the green salad, gyoza and choice of drink (I chose the hot green tea). The price of the set is just to add $5++ to the ramen that you pick.

The green salad was very yummy. I like the sauce they used (tasted like wafu sauce?) and the vegetables were very fresh & crisp. As for the gyoza, it was nothing to wow about although they were pretty delicious.

Before I could finish my sides, my Ippudo Shiro ramen arrived! I remember I actually had this the other time at Mandarin Gallery and was not impressed. However surprisingly, this time round I felt it tasted better. Guess could be there wasn't any strong ginger taste lingering in the soup.
This ramen is actually Ippudo's original Tonkatsu soup served with thin noodles, 2 pieces of Chashu, cabbage and black fungus. I asked for the spring onions to be removed. Since the ramen soup didn't "stink" of ginger, I could finish every bit of it, although I didn't finish the soup as I was too full by the time I finish all the noodles and my sides.

We were all so full after completing the set lunch, but my colleagues went ahead to order the desserts which I decided to skip in order not to torture my stomach further hehe.

Overall, I think the dining experience this time at this Ippudo Tao branch was more pleasant than the one at Mandarin Gallery. Besides, with the weekday set lunch, it's actually more value for money. So I don't mind going to this restaurant again.

Point is, it’s for your best interest if you do a good research on the location (and how to get there) before you head there. I did mine, but still took some time to reach the restaurant. It’s stated that it’s at UE Square, but it’s not in the main building of the mall, but across, behind this private apartments or something, up to Muhammad Sultan Road, then turn left (easiest would be to walk along River Valley Road and then turn into Muhammad Sultan Road).

Chashu Menma with Leek ($5.00++) :: It’s pork belly chunks and Japanese bamboo with leek. I’m a huge fan of pork belly, in any forms. lol. So I was automatically swayed to checking that on the menu. No worries on the leek. For me, I’m not a fan of vegetables in general, but the leek doesn’t really have too much of a foul taste in this dish, so it was all good. The combination of the three ingredients, on top of the ponzu dressing (basically some soy sauce + lemon or the likes) goes well for me.

Ebi & Avocado Wasabi Mayo ($5.00++) :: Unlike the previous dish, the name of this speaks for itself. I thought it was a rather interesting mixture of ingredients, and reminds me a lot of Salmon Avocado Sushi @ Ichiban. How do I put this – it’s easy to eat, it’s all mayo-filled and soft. Not very satisfying kind of a dish, although it isn’t that it isn’t nice, maybe because there isn’t any tough meat involved. Everything in this translucent plate is soft and you just eat and chew and swallow, nothing special nor memorable.

Buffalo Chicken ($14.00++) :: This gold-made (hah, exaggerating) buffalo chicken is a little on the pricey side. If I didn’t remember wrongly, the small one only has 3 pieces, and the large one 6 pieces, like the one we ordered -points up-. It has both the winglets and the drumlets, probably why they didn’t call it, like commonly named, Buffalo Wings. lol. It’s both mildly peppery spicy and sweet, both of which I enjoy much. Although so, I’m unsure of if I’ll be ordering that again on my next visit as I don’t think that it’s worth the money, as much as it tastes good.

Enoki Maki ($3.80++) :: Hands down, this is the champion of the night. Pork belly wrapped with enoki mushroom (also known as golden needle mushroom – the ones you throw into steamboats / boiling hot soups). Oh- my god. It’s orgasmic when you eat it while it’s warm. Especially so if you’re a fan of pork belly. AND enoki mushroom. There is no doubt that the next time I’m there, I’ll order this and have the whole plate to myself (1 sticks of 3 pieces – we ordered 2 of it, so the picture shows twice the quantity). Nikumiso Tofu Salad ($7.00++) :: The tofu is as soft as, tofu. Uncooked tofu, ultra tender. It’s supposed to be topped with spicy miso paste, but it really isn’t spicy, or at least for me. But then again, when are Japanese food spicy Except with the presence of wasabi, lol. Then it becomes choking. It was a so-so average bowl of salad for me, nothing special. A memorable salad (presentation + taste) would be the one at 15 Minutes @ LASALLE College of the Arts.

Tao Kuro Chashu ($18.00++) :: Wanting to experience the ‘spirited dynamism of TAO’, or in actual fact, because of Val’s recommendation to give Tao Kuro a shot, I went for it, with Chashu (pork belly – see I tell you, it’s attracted to me) as the topping. It actually comes with thick chewy noodles, but again, I changed it to the thin ones thanks to Val. Note the word thanks, because I saw a bowl my friend ordered with the thick noodles and I knew at first sight that the thick ones aren’t for me. I was grateful I changed mine and thus moving on to enjoy slurping through it. One thing though, I really have no idea if ramen is meant to be that salty. It supposedly is, because a close friend of mine said that the ones in Japan are far worse. I guess they’ve already toned it down for Singaporeans’ palate. I can’t imagine getting anything saltier down my throat. But other than that, I quite enjoyed the ramen!

Teriyaki Salmon with Leek ($10.00++) :: I want to put it across first – I didn’t actually try this dish. But my friend almost went crazy with the small portion that was presented in front of her eyes. This is actually one of the Chef’s Recommendation. It didn’t state if it’s a main course or a side, but she ordered it with the thought that it’s the former, thus wasn’t really pleased. Just in case you intend to order this when you get there – at least now you get to see the portion of it. But I thought, 10 bucks for salmon is not as bad if it actually tastes good.

Definitely a spot-on recommendation by Val – thank you once again! You’re right, if you like Ippudo @ Mandarin Gallery, you’d like Ippudo Tao @ UE Square. The service staff was way too polite (or at least the ones we encountered) it’d be bad not mentioning it here. Very attentive to detail – topping up of iced water on a regular basis, and even asking to top it up after we’ve footed our bill and ready to move off. And that time, I was actually appreciative because I really didn’t mind having that another half a cup of water to quench my thirst from the chats. That’s some extra value for you. Certainly worth a re-visit.

I headed to ippudo tao for some delicious ramen. I tried their tao kuro chashu, it was absolutely to die for. Firstly the soup was totally mouth watering, it was very thick and tasty. It really warms up your body. The chashu was sliced thinly, it was very tender and smooth. the noodles are very chewy and QQ, it does not stick to your teeth. As a whole, the entire ramen dish is simply delicious. it really does have a certain standard.

Thinking it would be interesting to try some new variations, I decided to come. However, this place is extremely difficult to find and not even located in the main UE square building. The Ramen here is good, but does not measure up to the Mandarin Gallery outlet's standards. Side dishes here are more interesting though, with things such as Ramen Sushi.

That was in the menu for your information. First time writing review, pardon me for being naggy.

Firstly, I love their pork belly in the dish, even though i'm not a pork lover and don't usually eat them, this dish definitely will make you fall in love with them and feel like eating more especially when they cut it in thin slices, you wouldn't feel like you're eating chewing gum. Probably because it's thinly sliced, the meat seemed to tear when i start chewing. Their soup seemed to compliment the noodles, porkbelly and the egg really well and the most wonderful thing is that the soup doesn't taste oily! i mean, it looked oily but when you finish eating it doesn't give the oily feeling. And finally the egg steal all the other's limelight in this dish. The moment i bite the egg, the york spilled into my mouth and the smell of it filled my whole mouth. It kinda tasted like  茶葉蛋 with the york in my mouth. woooo. Shiokness ever.

I was quite surprise after the first bite. The creamy puddling had this special sauce beneath in the cup. and it tasted like burned sugar? My sis said it tasted like alcohol. but it was fun guessing. hahahas. and it kinda sum up my day!

Buta Kakuni Onsen Tamago (which is the tender pork cubes in Japanese soy sauce) was fantastic too. It is served with an egg and once again, they did it just right, not too oily at all.

The service is fantastic and you get to see how the chefs prepare the food just right in front of you.
