My hot streaming curry chicken noodle came. The colour impressed me. It is strong red soupy. The taste is supper spicy hot. One who does not eat chilli hot will feel the bitting taste. Of course, it is not advisable to wear white otherwise, a white shirt will belong a colourful spotty shirt. The chicken portion is big. The cook gave the drumstick. As the chicken is soaked into the curry soup so have to eat gently. The noodle is tender. The cost of the meal is $6.50.

I did a little research, the original Sarawak Wanton Noodle was actually not supposed to serve along with Sambal Chilli. While adapting to local taste buds, it was a must to be fragrant spicy. I ordered dried Kolo Mee and Fried Wanton for side dishes. The mixture of blended sauce and minced pork was pleasant, went very well with noodles. Further topped with few slices of Roasted Pork and Veggies, a bowl of slippery stuffed shrimp dumpling soup was come together. It was $6.40, sounded reasonable.

The fried chicken mee is not served with black sauce. When the dish is served, there is also not a single drop of oil. The only way is to eat with tomato sauce. Those who do not enjoy tomato sauce or want to cut down on salt will not enjoy this dish. The only saving grace that this dish can offer is the fried chicken. The chicken is specially fried and it is crispy. The soup is generally not fantastic, it was not simmered with chicken bones for long hours.

The 2 bowls of noodle were served by a friendly Auntie to the table in 5 minutes. The presentation reminded me of our version of wanton noodle. The texture of noodle tasted different though. It is the thinner version of noodle with an extremely delightful springiness. A handful of char siew, minced meat and vegetable served along with a good portion of noodle.

The bowl of soup that came along with the noodle. It has got 2 pieces of wantons and 2 slices of abalone. The soup tasted rather light with a slight peppery taste. The wantons got tasty minced meat filling wrapped nicely in a rather thin layer of skin. The texture of abalone was a bit rubbery though.

The taste of the lime juice and water chestnut drink were equally delightful. Both drinks have the right level of sweetness with an intense taste which we enjoyed.

Though i enjoyed the noodle but i am not likely to pay $9.50 for it.

I came to try their signature kolo mee that got abalone for $9.50. The price is quite steep for a bowl of noodle. Their special noodle tossed with tasty sauce with ingredients like char siew, dumplings, abalone and vegetable. The abalone and dumplings served in the soup. The abalone did not have much taste. The texture of the noodle is really nice. I will still come back to eat it even though the price is high.

This is the first time I tried the curry noodle , normally I will order the usual Jia Xiang Mian ( include char siew , prawn and wanton ) . The curry sauce is thick and spicy , consider a large portion given with cubes of potatoes and chicken drumstick served together with the famous noodle . I don't really think the noodle goes well with the spicy curry sauce , personally I will not order it again in future. The water chestnut drink is a must to try too .

Other than their curry chicken noodle, another must try is the fried chicken chop noodle. You can have it with mee kia or mee pok. The mee pok is much thinner as compared to the usual type with a much springy texture. The fried chicken chop was a nice surprise when i tried it the first time. It was quite a big piece, nicely marinated then perfectly fried to give it a crispy texture but juicy within. Their service was prompt and friendly even during the lunch hour.

Jia Xiang Sarawak Kuching Kolo Mee

VivoCity, South, Singapore

August 2012

Jia Xiang's noodles are springy and QQ. Shaped in very tight coils even when served on the plate, they are bouncy when chewed.

Merlion Wayfarer's craving at the VivoCity outlet resulted in a plate of Black Pepper Duck Kolo Mee at S$6.50.

The base is light with a touch of spring onions and sesame. Vegetables are cooked just right such that when chewed, they are crunchy with a thick juicy squish sound.

The duck is best! With a thick slab of white skin, the smoked duck simply melts in your mouth. Each bite unleashes a whole mouthful of juice from the pinked duck. The aftertaste is so aromatic that it lingers even after you've stepped out of the restaurant...

I have no idea how Sarawak Famous Kolo Mee taste like so i went for a try. The noodle is spongy and chewy, quite tasty also. The ingredients are generous too, there is char siew, pork dumplings that is fully stuffed, and some veggies. The sauce is special, a bit sour and fragrant. Would like to have the authentic kolo mee at Sarawak next time.

Wanton Mee (kolo mee) - 4/5

First off, don't expect $3-$4 wanton mee here. A bowl costs about $6 bucks.

I ordered their signature wanton mee and i must say, i did not regret! The noodles are really special and had a very nice QQ texture to it. The wanton was ordinary though but i loved the char siew. Add some chilli sauce into your noodles to enhance the flavours!

Curry Kolo Mee $6 - 3.5/5

My friends order their curry chicken noodles and the curry was not bad; thick and flavorful. They were also very generous with their chicken, which was good, considering that this was an expensive bowl of noodles. Apart from that, nothing really special, but not a bad dish at all.

Overall, the staff had interesting deco, much like the olden eras where they had wooden benches and tables. Service wise, nothing much to comment on. Will be back when my pockets are feeling fat enough for a bowl of expensive noodles!
