It’s the long awaited weekend and off we went to Jones the Grocer for the much-needed refueling. Located on the 4th level of Ion, the 140 seater café and food emporium looks striking from afar. Not only does Jones serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, its also well stocked with a wide range of fine foods and confectionery sourced internationally.
ones ceases serving breakfast fare after 12 noon, so we could only order from the lunch menu, which was a simple 2-pager. Not a lot to choose from but the dishes were well thought out, featuring fresh, quality ingredients. Service was very friendly, in line with my café experiences in Australia.
Long Black ($5) and uniquely refreshing Orange Earl Grey Iced Tea ($7.50)
Whenever there’s angel hair pasta, I’ll surely order it. Yes, I am that blatant for my love of this carb. Jones Angel Hair Pasta ($28) comes with a crown of sweet blue swimmer crab, chilli, rocket, garlic and grana padano (Italian cheese). Individual flavors can be tasted separately and they worked extremely well on the whole. A mild, healthy-tasting dish that is satisfactory. Personally, I felt that more chilli could be used to lift the flavor.
Tempura Barramundi ($28) paired with Jones chips and Asian tartar. Enveloped within deep-fried crisp batter lies dense, flaky meat with a mild butter flavor. A joy to savour but do be careful of tiny bones. Comes with lackluster chips.
The folks here are serious about their beef burger, and they do a very good one. Australian Wagyu Burger ($28) is accompanied with bacon, gruyere, truffle mayonnaise, pickles, mustard, bois boudran sauce and caramelized onions. The sauce was not overpowering which allowed one to enjoy the true natural flavor of the beef. Thankfully,it came with a tangy salsa dip which spruced up the boring chips.
Delectable Black forest cake ($9) with potent kirsch punch, fluffy chocolate sponge, sitting atop an ethereally light mascarpone base. Pricy, but it’s worth it!
Baked Lemon Cheesecake ($7) is something I’d like to eat over and over because it’s gratifyingly rich, yet not at all cloying because of its tangy notes.
Cotton-candy hued Salted Caramel Macaron ($2) was crisps and slightly chewy with a gooey salted caramel centre. White Chocolate and Olive Macaron ($2) was terrible-hard like a rock!

I like the non-fussy, relaxed atmosphere of that place, where one could totally chill out and enjoy hearty food easily in a darkly-lit store filled with goodies on display.

We were really here for the Cheese, Fruits and Salami platter (second photo). For this platter, you get to choose a variety of cheese (we chose the conservative Mozzarella, Cheddar and one more with name that eluded my memory), then some Parma Ham and Salami, and some crackers and some dates and figs. It was really delicious - cutting tiny pieces of each and nibbling on them slowly, enjoying the exotic tastes of dairy products and cured meats. It was a little overwhelming at the end of the meal, but nonetheless, extremely satisfactory.

Errrr, yes, as though I haven't had enough cheese for one night! But this is a treasure! A very tasty piece of subtly-cheesy cheesecake, with a smooth (slightly grainy) feel. The brownie atop, and brownie chunks within - make for a great balance of sweetness and saltiness blend. Even the brownie is velvety. For a non-fan of cheesecakes, I always make an exception for this particular Brownie Cheesecake.

For the egg, there is a choice of poached, scrambled, and fried, which I has selected scrambled. The sausage is char burnt and tastes a bit bitter with burnt taste.

Spanish baked eggs 'en cocotte', chorizo, red pepper, tomato relish & spinach ($21++)
This dish takes the longest time to be served. Those who like tomato sauce will like this dish. It is too much tomato sauce for me. I like the bits of chorizo in the sauce. Covered with the hot sauce, the raw spinach does not too raw to me. The bread is a bit tough to chew on.

Mah Jong Fruit Blush Infusion Tea ($6++)
The tea has a rather fruity taste. The tea turns quite red in colour after soaking in the tea bag. After finishing the tea, mom has requested for a refill of hot water in the tea pot. But the pot does not make its way back. In the end we ask another staff who make another fresh pot as she could not find the previous pot.

Overall food is rather on the high end for simple breakfast dishes. Service is uneven for a not crowded day. Much to be improved on.

I am a brunch person, but getting to Orchard before 3pm seems like a tall order for either myself and my partner, as we both love to sleep-in late on weekends. Hence, dinner, it shall be.

The outlet that we patronised for our third year anniversary was nestled at the high floors of ION Orchard. As expected of a gourmet food store, Jones the Grocer has a lovely, elegant ambience with lighted candles and lovely wood furnitures, completed by a cold shelf of assorted drinks, such as fruit juice and wine, and dozens of cheese varieties.

Just be warned that their food ain't cheap at all, even with the exclusion of service and general taxes. A portion of Fish of the Day came with a hefty price tag at S$35 (not implying that I am a cheapo or equivalent). Nevertheless, it was with high hopes and expectations, when I walked into this restaurant that in my opinion - primarily serves tai tais or affluent businessmen. Shifting the focus back to the barramundi, with crushed potatoes and sauce antiboise (and adaptation of the French sauce), the presentation scored high, however the pan-fried fish was a tad moistless and overcooked, while the potato was very nicely done - soft, flavourful and the portion was just nice.

For myself, I had the Linguini (S$28) with forest mushroom, grana padano (a popular cheese variation in Italy), pangrattato (breadcrumbs) served in a light, creamy carbonara-like sauce. Tantalising and flavourful, their rendition was one of the best I had so far.

What is dinner without desserts? Girlfriend was raving about Marmalade Pantry's Sticky Date Pudding, until she tried Jones' version (S$14). Paired up with authentic vanilla bean ice cream and generous amount of luscious, flowing salted caramel sauce, one would never stop just at one bite. This dessert is sexy, alluring, tempting, and probably evil for anyone who is on a diet, but YOLO (you only live once).

All in all, rather than matching standards, it seems like they exert high importance on the presentation (and quantity, to a certain extent) and not so much on the quality. Please don't be mistaken that the food is not good, IT'S GOOD, but for the whopping price tag, one would naturally expect higher standards in terms of quality. Therefore, I would choose Wild Honey anytime over Jones the Grocer, unless the desserts call out to me again.

Food at Jones The Grocer is distinctively Australian, with a clear focus on really good and fresh ingredients with minimal cooking. Unpretentious, straightforward food that's wholesome and refreshingly uncomplicated.

However, service was woefully inefficient. The many waitresses were pleasant and cheery enough, but our water cups were left unfilled until the end of our meal. After we had to ask. The Hubby didn't get a paper napkin but I did. We walked into the restaurant and had to sit ourselves. It was already past the peak lunch hours and the restaurant was barely half-filled so there's really no excuse for such lapses in service.

We had:

1) Soft Herb Risotto ($26): with asparagus, taleggio and black truffle oil. It's been a while since I last had risotto and this was a welcome homecoming of sorts, even if there wasn't a trace of truffle oil in this. It had great texture, with a toothsome bite, and while starchy, was not the least bit cloying. It had a pleasant simplicity to it, flavours were kept light with just asparagus and copious shavings of sharp taleggio cheese.

2) Angel Hair Pasta with Blue Swimmer Crab ($28): with chilli, rocket, garlic and grana padano. The freshly shredded crabmeat was incredibly sweet, and we loved it. The cut chillis provided a mild heat and rocket leaves lent a peppery lift to balance the sweetness of the crab. A tiny gripe would be the itsy bits of crabshell that I had to ungracefully spit out

disappointing expensive dessert at this town outpost of the australian delicatessen newly opened on the top floor of the ion orchard mall. I wish this place actually served good food – orchard really is lacking in nice places you can sit down for a break between shopping – but I think I’ll be sticking with the marmalade pantry for now.
we had a sticky toffee pudding and a lemongrass panna cotta, both rather doleful renditions. the toffee pud looked great but the ice cream was icy and the cake was microwaved. i’ll give them credit for a good salty caramel though, dark and addictive – I was using this to help finish our order of the pannacotta.

the pannacotta was an insult to its name; this was a firm pudding, closer in texture to and gelatinous like an asian mango pudding, almost bouncy.

I wish this place had worked out – but it really didn’t. it’s just as expensive as you’d expect it to be – not ridiculous for the area but you’re much better off going shopping with that money (or head downstairs to the marmalade pantry).
