Crab Cake Benny

The mouth - watering and tasty crab cake is highly recommended to try although the bacon is quite salty but the crab cake made me to enjoy more on the brunch

Beside serving signature dishes and the occasional wine dinners, they also feature a bakery with freshly baked pastries and breads which was made in-house daily.

Location is perfect with just a stone throw away from Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. However due to its location, it might be a tad inaccessible if you are taking public transport. For those who are driving, do make sure that if you do not miss the turn into the carpark or you have to make a long way through before making a U-Turn.

Ambience is good for relaxing and unwind ourselves after a day of work, not to mention that the hospitality of the servers were great too. On top of that, this restaurant is kids friendly thus suitable for family gathering and meals.

I loved how the old Firestation now looks like a swanky makan joint with their ceiling to floor glass walls.

Some reviews shared that their service is not that great and in a way, that's kinda true. Ice water was only served when requested but after that, the servers were attentive enough to clear our plates and refill our water often.

Between the few of us, we ordered:
1) Clam Chowder - good amount of ingredients and the clams were juicy and big. Good!

2) Steak Frites - a fairly thick slab of beef that is a pretty good cut too! Seared nicely outside and still juicy and tasty! Absolutely best!

3) Spruce Burger - for $18, it's a very good serving size. The meat patty is very tender and accompanied with bacon, relish, onion, lettuce and somehow fragrant bun, total package of Yumz. Hubby loved loved loved this.

4) Salmon Steak - my friend had this and she said its nicely done to get a crispy exterior with a moist interior. Nice she said.

The steak frites was costly at $36 but very nice lah. Definitely a place to pull my heart strings for a return trip.

Whole Roasted Snapper.
The fish is really fresh. And no bad oil taste especially fried food. Should try.

Overall food experience, I would give a 4.5 stars.

It came with Scrambled eggs, baked beans, sausages, mushroom, tomato and focaccia toast. Scramble eggs was pretty well done and tasty. The price of the British Brekkie is much on the higher side which cost about $19. I ordered a latte to go along with it. I actually find the food presentation here not bad. However, service wasn’t that good. Perhaps it was the crowd, the waitress just left us to sit without coming to take our order. I actually had to call out to the waiter three times before someone coming to take our order. Even when we asked for payment, it took a long time. This left a really bad impression.

Spruce is a good place to have weekend brunch, although it might be a little too crowded, so its advisable to make reservations in advance. I've tried their Banana Hotcakes before which was one of the best pancakes i've eaten at cafes so far. I got the Big Brekkie this time, which costs $19 without wine; as i've previously gotten poached eggs which were average, I opted for scrambled this time which was better. They do not have much variety on their menu, and majority of the mains are meat which isn't what I had appetite for then.
Well, I ordered the risotto as I was looking for something to warm me up after a cold movie session.

The risotto came and does not look presentable at all. It looks like brown mushroom sauce (on a polite note). But hey, looks does not matters when it comes to food right? But long story short, the dish simply lack focus, it was very salty and I bet the ready meals sold in super market taste divine compared to that. Everything was overdone in that dish, risotto was meant to be a rice dish and yet I saw more mushroom gravy in it and rice is being rather elusive. There are also mysterious leaves which I suppose it's basil and everything tasted off. It felt as if the sauce used for steaks and burger were used to cooked the risotto and salt was added as if it's not salty enough. I have no idea why they even put the dish on the menu in the first place. Its just disgusting.

The service is ok, not great but ok.

Anyway, I think the next time I am there, beer is the safest option.

Spruce had cleverly kept the decor of the old Fire Station, which makes it an even more special place to dine in. I tried the Spruce burger which was pretty average in my opinion. Not the best burger I had, but good for the ambiance, especially if you are choosing a place for a date. Considering that their burger is one of the cheapest items on the menu, Spruce is not for those on a budget, as my bill came up to around $30 after getting a drink. My friend had the Baby Back Ribs which was quite good, as the back ribs were really soft and have soaked up all of the goodness of the BBQ sauce, but again for $33, its considered slightly pricey to me.

My friend was raving about the Banana Hotcakes from Spruce, and as a pancake lover, I just had to give it a try. The portion was HUGE and enough for 3. The hotcakes were drizzled with honeycomb butter and blueberry syrup, accompanied by granola crumbs which I loved, added a crunchy feel to every bite. There were also fresh blueberries at the sides. Banana slices were on the topped and in between the hotcakes. Good combination and delicious.
