Standing Sushi Bar is a recently opened sushi joint which provides fresh and good quality sushi at affordable prices, as compared to Tatsuya and Nogawa. They switch from standing during lunch hours to swinging out the chairs after 3pm to prepare for the dinner crowd, where they serve delicious a la carte dishes and the special omakase set dinner, where chef Roy prepares a full course of Japanese dishes not on the menu.

We had the Baby Octopus for 5 SGD, Michael’s favourite Japanese dish (my favourite too!). 6 to 7 baby octopus covered with a sweet red sauce topped with sesame, is my kind of comfort food. My only feedback for this dish was that the sauce is slightly thick for my taste but still delightful.

The Maguro & Sake (12.00 SGD) is a plate consisting of 3 slices of Tuna and Salmon each served with a lump of wasabi. No wonder, they got the community best sashimi. The slices of Tuna and Salmon were quite thick and smooth without a strong fishy aftertaste. Definitely thumbs up from Yew Ann, Michael and me. Pricewise, it was kind of steep if you ask me, twelve dollars for 6 slices, however it was good sashimi for a layman like me.

We re-visited the California Roll (6.00 SGD) . We enjoyed the lemon sauce/ mayonnaise drizzled on the top of the California Roll. Yew Ann and Michael were very pleased with the sushi.

Green Tea was complimentary.

Overall, we were very pleased with Standing Sushi Bar, the food did not disappoint and in fact it was good. Price wise, you are looking about something around the range of 20 SGD to 30 SGD if you have a few items, plus GST and service charge.

The service was good. The waitress who tended to us was helpful and friendly.

The bill came about 27.05 SGD after GST and Service Charge.

I love the Chef’s Special (Sashimi platter) $25.00. It’s very fresh! And the thick chucky slices of shashimi spells H-E-A-V-E-N.Was there with a bunch of friends and we had the Nigiri platter that has Maguro $2, Sake Toro $2, Hamachi (a type of yellowtail) $4, Aburi Hotate $4 and Shime Saba (Mackerel) $3. Out of the five, I like the Saba (Mackerel) best! Special instructions from the chef to eat from the lighter taste to the stronger taste fish and not to dip the Aburi Hotate (Scallops)/the one

I love the Chef’s Special (Sashimi platter) $25.00. It’s very fresh! And the thick chucky slices of shashimi spells H-E-A-V-E-N.

Was there with a bunch of friends and we had the Nigiri platter that has Maguro $2, Sake Toro $2, Hamachi (a type of yellowtail) $4, Aburi Hotate $4 and Shime Saba (Mackerel) $3. Out of the five, I like the Saba (Mackerel) best! Special instructions from the chef to eat from the lighter taste to the stronger taste fish and not to dip the Aburi Hotate (Scallops)/the one with pinky paste on top of it on soy sauce. It was very useful to have the chef checking on us all the time to see if we are treating the sushi right.

Must-try item is the Anago $6! This perfectly simmered salt-water eel is slightly less rich and oily than the unagi!

The deep-fried chicken nuggets, Tori Karaage $6 had a good crispiness to it and I was also pleased that the Agedashi Tofu $5 had a slight crispiness before giving way to a sogginess as it absorbed the Dashi Broth which had light notes of the Kombu (Kelp) and Shoyu (Soy Sauce).

But my favourite has to be the Mix Kinoko Foil Yaki $10 was AWESOME! Mushrooms lovers alert! A good mix of Shitake, Enoki and Shimeji mushrooms glazed in a secret special sauce which the chef won’t tell and we just can’t figured out what is it. This is also a must-try.

My vote for drink of the day goes to the cool and smooth Asahi beer! SLurps Aaaaaaah. Goes really well with the California roll $6.

Kampai!
