Nestled along a busy stretch of shops right in the heart of Toa Payoh hub, this little Gui Lin Gao (a.k.a herbal jelly) shop serves one of the most authentic Gui Lin Gao in Singapore. The Gui Lin Gao comes in only one flavour (original) and two sizes ($5 for a small bowl and $7 for a big bowl enough for 2pax to share). This shop sells herbal tea ($1.50) as well. The Gui Lin Gao is smooth and rich in flavour. One could easily tell from the taste the amount and variety of herbs added to create this healthy cooling dessert. The soft texture of the Gui Lin Gao melts instantly upon entering the mouth and the cooling sensation will definitely leave you craving for more.Blended with the sugar syrup (served in a small traditional porcelain teapot), this dessert leaves a bittersweet aftertaste that lingers in the mouth for hours. For those who are more adventurous (like me), eating this in its raw form, though bitter, allows one to savour the richness of the herbs and its untainted flavours. And best of all, it detoxes the body and aids in healthy digestion and absorption of nutrients. For those who would like to lose weight, this is definitely a must try! continue reading

In the whole of Toa Payoh, you can find places selling gui lin gao either in medical shops or as desserts in hawker center but you can only find one true gui lin gao in a shop called Tang He Tang located in Toa Payoh Central. The shop is also very easy to find as you can see the big golden containers where they keep the hot gui lin gao.Their herbal jelly is made of many types of herbs which are on display in bottles in the shop and even though there's no closed door to the shop, the aircon is full blast and it's very comfortable with those rosewoods chair and tables.Price at small bowl for $5 or big bowl at $7 whether hot or cold and the honey syrup is also very fragrant,They are sell freshly brewed herbal tea. continue reading
